Our America With Lisa Ling Modern Polygamy Part 3-3

5/22/2013 Originally, this post had part 3 of the episode "Our America With Lisa Ling - Modern Polygamy. The episode was split into 3 parts, which since have been taken down. However, I have found the video in another place so I will be putting it up in a new post. It is very interesting; the precedent to POLYGAMY USA, even to the point of hearing Arthur's crusty mantra - "Take it or leave it, we don't care!" If you would like to see this episode, check May 2013 posts. Thank you!

  1. It's a nice documentary but they totally omitted the issue of the lost boys...
The male to female ratio is approximately 1:1, that means for every 100 men born a 100 women are born. Now if every man who gets married takes 2 wives, that means half of the men (50) won't have a chance to find a wife.
Since Centennial Park is sort of a closed communtiy, with not many people coming in from outside the community there must be a substantial amount of men that are thrown out of have to remain bachelors eternally, since many of these men have even more than two wives.
That's the essential issue I have with polygamy, for each additional wife a man takes he deprives another man of the chance of having a wife!

  2. yeah, this was pointless, really. Lisa Ling came across as enchanted with it all. problems were so lightly touched on it was worthless and a disservice to the abused - male and female.

  3. What was that "Math Teacher" teaching? "The Multiples of Wives?" "The Multiples of Children?"

  4. I know. I was disappointed in Lisa.

And they NEVER say why they live the "lifestyle" which irks me to no end.
It is total blasphemy to the lord.

  5. Can the wives have more than one husband?

If they want the law passed one way they should expect it to be passed the other way as well. Fair is fair. If husband's can have multiple wives then wives should be able to have multiple husbands.

  6. Sports shirts with the emblem "Masada Warriors?" Not sure that references to a sect that eventually committed suicide, to the last man woman and child rather than surrender to the Romans, is very healthy imagery for teens! Sounds too much like Warren Jeffs' craziness! Shades of Waco!

  7. Why do those of you that were involved with polygamy think that they never really tell you why they have to do it (polygamy)?

Wwasn't that crazy that wife saying she didn't want to be burdened taking care of her man?

  8. i'm not understanding how it could be fair if it was reversed? the woman will still be pregnant all the time and out of commission alot. and the babies count would be cut way down. which is one of the purposes of religious polygamy for the man to have his full inheritance of gobs and gobs of posterity. remember some of these plyg kings have at least 50+ children when they die.

the only way to make it really fair and compare apple to apples would be if the men were able to get pregnant but not the woman. now we're talkin'!

  9. I like seeing the kids playing ball. I wish that the women weren't so...weid looking, esp. the one that moved out!! Yikes!

Once again tehy clarify what I think is awful. Pick a spouse, bam your married. The Hell with getting to know them. Or even know what you really want. I hate how the Brown's act so over protective- yet, all their kids probably will marry by the time they are 22.

  11. I saw this when it was TV. And I thought to myself- Lisa Ling, a - you are a sell out, and b - you look like you have too much botox in your face!

They like to act like the women have authority, yeah, right. I have some land in Florida...

  12. Do these kids own a hairbrush?? I saw this before, and was amazed at how Fundy Mormons can change the rules more that Baptists can!

OMG! That teacher should not be teaching, he reeks of creepy. Is he flirting with these young girls?

  13. So the girls can choose their husbands, but some of them have their "revelation" of who the man is at a very young age. How do they know it's not just a crush? Or just a random thought? ("With my luck, God would want me to marry Old Guy over there. Oh my goodness, He DOES!") So in this scenario, math teacher's 2nd wife has a "revelation" at 12 years old, while he's her math teacher, that he's the one for her. And then she sits on her "special secret" for 7 years. Did she talk to anyone about how she felt? Did she notice other guys? Or did she stop looking? She basically viewed math teacher guy "in her heart" as her husband, for 7 years before they got married. Isn't that called coveting? No wonder she is having a hard time accepting Wife #3.

  14. Centenial Park community-they seem to 'pick' mates differently than how Kody and his wives got together-Meri said she 'helped' Kody find the 4th, when HE wanted a 4th wife. This way, in CP-couldn't a attractive man, a caring man, end up with many, many wives.. more than he WANTS??? I did not understand why the girls basketball team did not play other schools teams before... who did they play? As for their uniforms, what is the big deal? If you just explain to others, others who ask, that this team, the community, comes from a very religious background and their uniforms have to reflect their beliefs. No Biggy. Especially since there is a large pop. of Mormons in general in Utah, (not just talking Polys), and while they are not necessary Polys, they would understand more about following dresscodes due to religious backgrounds. (say as opposed to Las Vegas, Nevada-where this school uniform would probably make some people do a double take.)

  15. I watched this the entire way through. I did find it very interesting, especially the fact that they documented a family where a wife had moved out.

Back in one of the earliest episodes of SW, I remember Meri talking about her sister and how her sister's sister wife cared for her children when she was sick, how grateful Meri was that there was someone to raise her biological nieces and nephews.

    I totally get that.

What I wish that some outlet would address is what happens when the husband falls ill or decides to leave the family- or something like that. (The part of this document where the wife left for several months made me think of this) Maybe it never happens, but I can imagine the situation would be much worse because the head of the household and financial provider would be missing.

  16. The math teacher is just plain creepy, I'm in my 50's and if he even looked in my direction I would be repulsed. His wife wanted someone to take care of his bedroom needs...hmm, wonder if he even visits her room anymore? She certainly didn't sound as though she would want him to. 'Wife' number 2 seems to have staked her claim and up comes 'wife' number 3. All three of the women seemed bizarre to me but number 3 took the prize...her eyes nearly bugging out of her head and her extremely careful enunciation of each little syllable, she's spooky...she's also pregnant again. Gah! I feel sorry for these kids...

  17. If I were married to that creepy math teacher, I would also need some - no a LOT of - help from other sister wives to care for his bedroom needs. And maybe some alcoholic beverage as well.

I thought the girls' uniforms were cute.

  18. If CP suggested using that creepy math teacher in an attempt to convince the masses that their religion ISN'T creepy...I hate to think which men they turned down for the show. This guy disturbs me to no end!

  19. Birth ratio is not a good place to examine if polygamy would cause any shortages in one gender. It's best to look at the age of consent and older because there we start seeing either more men than women or more women than men, depending on the country. With that said, polygamy is not limited to polyGYNY. Polygamy legalized in a democratic society would take all forms involving any combination of genders and sexuality.
