  1. Christine was given too much aire time in this. I know she was awful but it just gives her more attention which she wants. However, I do think it could turn out well because the Browns might actually respond to this. Sobbyn wouldn't miss a chance to sound like a supportive sister wife by adding her thoughts to this in addition to defending herself.

I really really hope the Browns respond to this. It will be a delicious, disastrous train wreck to watch. You're amazing Kollene!

  2. very accurate depiction of the Brown Family. Kollene you are brave and beautiful and ballsy, I believe that Kody and his wives are afraid of women like yourself who say it how it is and take no crap.

  3. Brave and wise beyond your years. You seem to get the grasp that immaturity can run in all ages! Hopefully 1 teen will see your story and beable to leave too.

Loved what you had to say about the debate! Good job.

  4. I think you summed Christine up in a nutshell. Since you don't watch the show, I'll tell you there have been several times that she has gone off about how she will feel like she failed if her kids don't go into polygamy. Sad huh? Great job, loved the video vs written!

    2. Kollene please let Willie know that we would love to hear from him! How anyone can listen to you and not be moved by what you have to say is beyond me.

You are an excellent spokesperson for leaving polygamy and I hope that life gives you many blessings.

We've loved having you here. Your video was spot on. Thank you for giving us insight!

  9. Kollene - you have such a strong head on your shoulders. You are a level-headed, determined, beautiful person, and I am so sorry that you have to carry around the hurt of what has happened to you. I cannot even imagine what your life was like before you left the Kingston group.
I know it must be so frustrating to witness the happy-clappy view of plural marriage that has become TLC's agenda to promote, when you KNOW the truth of what it is like for the vast majority of people who live it. That's what I took away from this episode: that you, Kristyn, Christine and Willie were all on the panel in a very open way, just to try to express that you acknowledge that yes, ok, the Browns say they are happy, but they should in turn acknowledge that that is in no way the norm. Honestly, I don't think anyone believes that the Browns care about changing the perception of polygamy in North America. They care about the bottom line, about their show and the family they sell, and the idea that you were coming along and threatening the public's perception of them was a massive threat to their livelihood.
You are a strong person, and you have huge support behind you from people like Kristyn, but also people like me who you have never even met. I hope you find some solace in that.

    1. Completely agree with you on this, OpenMinded. The Browns want to keep the money rolling in from TLC and the appearances they make. I guess that's understandable b/c they have 2 million $$$$ worth of mortgaged homes, and Sobbyn needs her weekly nail appointments. They don't want their "brand" tarnished in any way, even if it means unfairly attacking true victims of polygamy.

As Kollene correctly pointed out, they have learned how to "milk it" for the cameras, and they do it as often as possible. She also nailed it w/ her assessment of Christine: the immature Pixie Plyg. There's one thing I will agree w/ Koduche about: Pixie Plyg does bite. I really hope that Aspyn will educate herself and the other 5 siblings, too.

The good thing about the Browns being in Vegas is that those kids are getting exposed to other cultures and ideas.

From what I've seen of the Browns' Sunday services, it doesn't look like Rev. Douche is a compelling speaker who's making a strong case for polygamy. They rarely have family dinners together like they had in Lehi. The one thing that gives me a little hope for the kids' futures is that the Browns really are an anomaly as compared to the compound plygs. I don't think they would want any of the Brown daughters to wind up in the Kingston group, for example, so I wonder how the girls would live the plyg lifestyle? Marry a Darger or a Willams boy? Can you imagine how Meri would go off the rails if she thought Mariah was going to end up w/ the Allred, Kingston, or Jessop groups on one of those compounds? Meri's love for her daughter is obvious and huge, and even though Mariah has asserted that she wants sister wives, I just can't imagine that Meri would condone her moving into a situation where her daughter would not be safe from the kinds of atrocities that the CALM panel members @ UNLV described. I have a growing feeling that the majority of the children will veer away from polygamy. I definitely don't see Logan or Hunter heading in that direction.

Sobbyn. All about Sobbyn. All the time. (I'd really love to know what the older Brown children think about her addition to their family.) I couldn't bring myself to watch the show on Sun. night b/c it's so contrived, but I was pleased to hear Kollene say that Meri had to correct Sobbyn about "5 of us" and not 4, like the Chin blurted out. (Wonder which wife was eliminated in the Chin's head count? Surely it wasn't Lord Douche!) She's a manipulative narcissist who carefully hunted for her prey as soon as the word circulated everywhere in plyg circles that the Browns were going to have their own reality show. She knew she had to play it up nice and sweet with the #1 wife, and Meri fell for it. It's no surprise that Kodouche was captivated. She consistently seeks attention from the cameras, but I did love it when she forgot herself and started to clean her teeth w/ her tongue in the couch session a week or so ago. It was hilarious!! Also, she mumbles and slurs her words, never enunciating properly. She is immature, slippery, AND ignorant. Sweetie Sobbyn is exactly what Kollene describes. She's a "bee with an itch.'

Kollene, the books you pointed out are added to my list, and I'm glad that you recommend them. When you were on Doris Hanson's show, I was moved to tears by so many parts of your story, particularly when you were only 3, very sick, and given oats. Your father's abuse was horrific. I just recoiled as I pictured a parent being that cruel and grotesque. Thank goodness you have escaped from such a place of misery, repression, and oppression. I realize it must be difficult to have family members whom you love so much still involved in that sad situation, but I will send you strong thoughts every day and hope that the ones you love will someday find the courage to leave the Kingston group.

    2. Kollene, if you don't watch the show in general, you do have to watch the clip where The Chin forgets where she is for a moment and cleans her teeth with her tongue. Bwahahahaha!! It wasn't a slight lick of the lips either. She acted like she just ate a steak dinner with corn on the cob!

    4. I see pros and cons to starting a tv show. but I would like to do one even if it was only a year. Just because it is my ultimate goal to help, motivate and encourage people in polygamy groups to find themselves and be free of any restrictions. The kingston group is very evil and powerful, they threaten people that leave the order with their lives among other hurtful things to that individuals family that is still involved with the group. Its worth my life to help even one person.

  11. Kollene, I'm sorry for the abuse your endured and I thank you for sharing your story. Thank you, also, for tolerating the immature, self-aggrandizing behavior from the Browns so that we, the viewers, could them in their true colors. Perhaps one day the Brown women will reflect back on your authenticity and strength and feel inspired to make some changes. In the meantime, I wish you the best. You have your whole life ahead of you, a life that can be shaped into whatever you choose.

I really knew very little about polygamy (other than Big Love and the horrors of Warren Jeffs). 1. I wish "IT'S NOT ABOUT THE SEX, MY ASS!" by Joanne Hanks was included on the left of suggested reads. Everyone i know that's read that one has loved it. Even tho it's got some despair in it - it's a great snarky humorous book of overcoming and getting the hell outta Dodge once one realizes it's all a bunch of bogus crap! Just like Kody and Janelle, Joanne Hanks was also raised mainstream Mormon and joined a fundie mormon sect in her adulthood (mormon husband joined, too).

Anyway, I've read dozens of plyg books and then some but this is the only one that didn't literally make me sick to my stomach while reading but i was able to actually laugh out loud at the absurdity of it all through Joanne's firsthand account. Joanne's in a great emotionally healthy place now with her own personal freedom from organized religion of any kind!

Kolleen hit the nail on the head with the wives!LOL I too have heard from a friend in LV that Meri is very nice in person and nothing like what we see on TV. Robyn and Christine could take a lesson in maturity from Kollene and Willy, who I've seen on another show and was very articulate.
Christine and Robyn seem like your typical immature mother probably came from immature mothers and a cult so there you have it. NOT free thinkers.

    1. I was surprised to hear what Kollene said about Meri being nice and a real adult, as compared to Pixie Plyg and Sweetie Sobbyn, b/c she doesn't come across too well on the show. Very interesting that your friend described her as being very nice in person. 2. Yes, we need a do-over on the best mom poll! I think that the Brown kids, however, have turned out very well. I don't think this is a reflection of the Brown parenting, probably just the opposite. Logan, Aspyn, and Maddie seem to be very mature and well-rounded, and Mykelti might very well be the breakout fashion design star someday.

I seriously lost all respect for Christine after the debate. Robyn showed her true mean girl colors, and Meri seemed almost...nice.

  19. Kollene, thank you for offering your story and your thoughts on the panel.

I support you fully and am amazed at your ability to present yourself with class and maturity, but I think you misjudge some of the Sister Wives viewing audience. When I see two women chatting outside a bathroom, I assume they are waiting for the bathroom. When I see a grown woman in need of an escort out of a bathroom, I see a mental wreck. I do not put 2 + 2 together and decide that you and Kristie were bullying a woman twice your age. TLC can edit however they wish, but at least half the viewers don't buy the story they are selling. You do not need to defend yourself against bizarre story lines.

I do wish we could see the whole panel discussion, it would make far better television than the rehash of boring plots that SW has become.

And I have a question for you: As a mother of girls, I can not fathom wishing the inequity (to say the least) of polygyny on my daughters - I wonder what makes a polygamous mom tick. Can you tell us more examples of a "typical plyg mom"?

Thank you for your insight. I am sorry your story has such a horrible start, but I look forward to your future; I have no doubt it will be bright. I hope the viewing audience will have a glimpse of your future successes.

I was just telling my wife last night ( yes, we watch it together) how my feelings have changed towards the show. Initially I equated the Brown's "struggle" with marriage equality but thanks to this blog and all of its contributors I have had my eyes opened WIDE.
Polygamy on the whole is abusive, no matter how the Browns or the Dargers or anyone spins their story, and its time to act to protect the innocent people who are currently and those that will suffer if it is not stopped.

  24. As a survivor of a schizophrenic parent, I see myself in Kollene. It's a taboo to speak up and say "this is what I went through, this is what my parents did". In our society you're expected to only say good things about your parents, even if it's false. I hope Kollene keeps up her advocacy and I wish her the strength to endure. We don't fully heal these scars, but we can wear them well, and that's what Kollene is doing. She has helped so many with her candid honesty.

  26. I'm watching Kolleen's video and I'm not but a few minutes into it and something strikes me. First let me say that I'm not condoning polygamy, I am speaking from a mother's perspective.

Kolleen made me think about something. She reminded us how Christine didn't want Aspyn there. Kolleen also suggested that it may be Christine's way of protecting her daughter. I get the desire to protect your daughter...however... We all want our children to know how to swim, do we take them to a pool, toss them in the deep end and let the child figure out how to swim and survive? Isn't keeping your daughter from the (contrary to your own beliefs) bad stuff essentially the same as tossing your child in the deep end?

I would think that you would want your child to see how you handle things, see your example, so they have an idea how to handle issues when they come across them on their own.

    1. Kollene can tell me if I am right or not, but I think it has to do with the mentality of the mother. I was raised in a cult [not a polygamous one] and they all work the same mentally. People get broken down mentally and emotionally. Especially in ones where men are held in higher esteem within the community.

As the mother becomes numb, and a shell of herself, the attention shift from the husband to children. We all need a purpose in life or something to live for and in abusive relationships that tends to fall to the children. I think Kollene meant that Christine was shielding her daughter from a different reality so Aspyns path in polygamy was not altered. Not actual harm like what a non mentally damaged person would think.

Christine strikes me as a typical cult follower who has thrown herself into her children because she has nothing else. She needs to keep feeling needed and children provide that for her.

  27. I guess it shows that parenting is not fair in the brown family. Janelle's kids got to go, Christine's didn't.

  28. First I want Kollene to know how sorry I am for the childhood she endured. I am glad you were able to escape and become the woman God truly wants you to be. Recovery will be a life-long process, but by helping others as you are, you will experience healing. I hope you reach a point where you accept the love of Jesus Christ as Doris Hanson has.

My question is: Do you know what happens to the welfare monies your dad has received for his 180+ children. (I assume the moms had to hand the money over to their "husband"). So the more wives and kids a man has, the more powerful he becomes? And all of this through abuse of the welfare system? Or am I way off base, and the sect lives off of whatever income they make at their outside jobs? And what about health care?

Guess that was more than one question, but living in the mid-west and unfamiliar with Mormonism, I just don't understand how the system is sustainable.

    1. Daniel can't necessarily receive welfare money because his name isn't on most of his kids birth certificate. The women in Daniels family wasn't aloud to get on food stamps because it would put Daniel at risk for prosecution because polygamy is illegal. and everyone in the community is very very anal about not letting anybody know who your dad is and not talking to outsiders and tv people and the law enforcement they are very dangerous and want to hurt the kingdom of god upon the earth because that is what the order is.
Only bad wives got on food stamps and welfare, when I was little mom called the food stamps card the magic star card because we could get amazing foods with it. She called it that because she didn't want her kids to tell on her. I remember asking why are we getting good/outsider food? because we were only supposed to get cheap food like beans and rice and potatoes from our idaho farm, the thing I liked about our group is the health contentiousness we didnt eat junk. everything is home made and home grown as much as possible. I remember after church then other members of the group brought truck loads of outdated food from grocery stores and rotten vegetables and fruit.. and we picked through it and scrounged up what we could, they took out all the processed food and through it in the dumpster, the younger kids found out and we all started dumpster diving because we wanted that food because it was something we never had in our homes, the moms didnt care and it was nice knowing that their Kid had some sort of sustenance. I lived at the kingston woods cross polygamous farm and they had this food that they would bring to the pigs and cows on the farm, we called it "the bargain bin." or the milk truck and thats where we got those big bag cereals, hostess brand, fusions yogurt drinks, yoplait. and other types of bakery products. I remember I have no clue what we were doing this for, but it was one of my first child labor jobs. on the farm we had these trucks that brought thousands of pounds of dough! and me and my siblings would climb into these trucks and unpackage the dough and dump it in the truck and get rid of all the plastic and cardboard. we had a blast playing in the dough we would sink in it and have so much fun playing in rotten dough.. hahahaha but as a kid it was totally adventurous and fun. we would come home looking like we were part of the mix in a bread batter that escaped the bowl.bwahahha mom would yell, dont come into my house and track that dough everywhere we would get hosed down before coming in and we smelt like rotten dough ^_^ anyway my point is we were not aloud to get onto food stamps. but some wives did. healthcare for the most part isn't there, I've never been to the doctors. we are big in home remedies, doctors are evil. In Daniels family they started to take money from the wives for healthcare but only the favorite wives ended up using it. It was better to die than to get on welfare because that is a government thing and can jeopardize your families secret lives of polygamy. Sister Jeanie was a perfect example, wish I could find a link for her obituary. outside jobs are not aloud in the kingston community. because If the order doesnt have it we dont need it. any interactions with outsiders is bad.

Kollene, I recently watch WLIT and was brought to tears. I do realize that each time you or one of your fellow anti-polygamists step up and speak, you have to relive a great deal. The Browns should know this so shame on them!
Sadly, it speaks volumes that THEY know this also and still show to make the show all about them, instead of a general panel discussion. THEY made it a debate. I guess you will know the next time a show is seeking you out that those producers are like snake oil salesmen, they will tell you anything to get you on then misguide you and sell you out.

I do think it would be wonderful if you and Willy got a show. Please be careful. I think you've seen enough snakes not to get bitten again.

That being said, I love your style, your fashion sense, and you have a bright future ahead!!

Book Please! I want to see an ad with YOU on the cover to my right.

Oh! and take advantage of your youthful years, get out and play! Sounds like you have earned it.

  32. Christine kept saying that her aunt "hates her family," when in reality I saw no hatred of Christine's family by her aunt Kristen. I saw concern coming from aunt Kristen. I saw judgement and narrow-mindedness by Christine AND Robyn.

Then there is the issue where the term "sister wives" was mentioned when Kolleen said that sister wives hate each other. It really ticked me off when Robyn attacked her and claimed that Kolleen was attacking Robyn and her sister wives. Doesn't every polygamous family have sister wives? What gives you the right to sole ownership of the two words.

Other than Janelle, I've really lost a lot of respect for the other wives. They are playing victims and while the original attempt might have been to enlighten the world that all polygamy is not evil...they're doing more harm than good for their cause.

P.S. Robyn was a big mistake to add as a 4th wife. She makes me sick to my stomach when I watch her and her drama. She may be the 4th wife, but it's obvious who is running the "show" when it comes to the wives. The jewelry business is crap. Should have supported Janelle's gym idea. At least it is realistic.

  33. I have a different opinion than most here, so we'll see if this gets posted

Regarding the bathroom scene on the show: When Kollene first left the room where she was with Kristyn, Christine M, and Willy, She motioned for Kristyn who was standing in the door way, with a big grin on her face, to come with her to the bathroom. Why? Why did she want Kristyn with her?
As they walked past the room where the Browns were, Kollene looked directly at them and shot a quick smirky smile. Meanwhile Kristyn purposely turned head away from them as she walked by. Kristyn had what I thought to be an over exaggerated smile going on. Why? What was she up to?
When they reached the restroom, Kollene said "There's a Sister Wife in there. DON don DON don.....hehehehehe" To me Kollene was the one out for the drama, even making her own theme music for the occasion.

Now if I were Christine B. and heard that, there is no way I would have walked out into that kind of immature drama being voiced on the other side of the door.
By the time Meri, Christine, and Robyn made their escape, Christine M had joined in on it too.

I have re-watched the scenes several times and also in slow motion.

Just my take on what I saw.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I have probably watched it more in slow mo! Many things are going on. First, this went on forever. You do not see that. Second, the group had been made aware of how Christine was acting and felt in a strange position, I am sure. Third, Kollene is young, she has stood by the bathroom waiting forever, why wouldn't she want Kristyn to come stand with her? Fourth, there was absolutely nothing to fear. The whole Aunt thing was Browns way of creating drama where there was none and to gain sympathy with the viewers, which is what they do over and over. YOU DO NOT see any of the anti polygamists talking so hateful about the Browns. Kollene has stated several times she was sick of the big drama and had to pee! Come on, can't walk past an Aunt? With the cameras rolling to catch her if she did confront her? I respectfully, totally disagree. Did you see Robyn giggle as she walked in the bathroom to "save" Christine? What about that? It was a ploy, bait, I am quite sure if Kristyn Decker wanted to rattle skeletons in Christine's closet, she could have, she did not, by any means. She was looking forward to seeing her. The lack of respect was the Browns and how they behaved to the victims.

      Delete
    2. The Ex-plygs were also told to use a seperate enterance and not talk to the Browns. It seemed ridiculous. I would have been giggling and making light too. And I thought Kristyn's smile and greeting were warm? Not taunting or anything... But thats just me. It seemed more staged by Christine "oh good! Now everyone can see how upset and uncomfortable I am!"

      Delete
    3. I believe Mister Sister said it all.

Funny, once the panel was going on, there is Christine with her fake smile and her "I love you Aunt Kristyn." Remember when Christine said keep your friends close and your enemies closer? I don't follow that at all, but she sure does. Why wasn't she scared then? Crying? Oh, it would look stupid, so she didn't.

    4. Robyn had her lips pressed hard together in an upward turn, and her eye brows raised and her eyes squinted. I did not see or hear a giggle from her.

I am a plig kid. My family lived in Pinedale MT. During the time that Rulon Allred was murdered. He was my fathers priesthood head at the time. 2 years after his murder, my father choose to leave "The Ranch" and "The Work".

I was 8 years old. My older sister from his first wife was 12. My father, started getting lots of attention from other men in the group when she turned 12, and grew very concerned for his 8 daughters welfare. He did not want his daughters to be plural wives. He knew and saw the harm it would do to us, first hand. He watched his 2 wives, and what polygamy had done to them. He had gotten himself and others into a horrible mess! Its been 35 years since he got all of his family out of that.
He is 73 now, has lost both his wives. He tried but failed to continue to be a father and husband to his 2 wives (which one was he going to let down?) and 11 children after we left. The wives insisted on living in separate states. It was impossible for him to be fair to each. He couldn't be in and work in two different places at once. Trying to do the impossible drove him nearly insane.

There are many sides to the polygamy story! Don't shake your *stinky finger* (pun intended) at me, as if I don't know what Im talking about.

Thank you for posting my thoughts as well

    6. I am Christine Marie. I was there. I haven't watched the show, but I went with Kristyn to the bathroom. We had no idea there was anyone in the bathroom, let alone WHO. The producer made it clear to us that the Brown's did not want to cross our path, we had to enter the building at a different time and through a different door, etc. Either way, quite frankly, to be respectful, we wouldn't have gone at that time if we had known, but it seemed like a setup even then because it was suggested we go to the bathroom one last time before the panel, and then the camera crews followed us down. They knew something we didn't know. Kristyn, Kollene and I wondered, "Why are on earth are the camera crew filming us now, of all things?" We didn't get it, but we waited, and waited, and waited, so we chatted quietly about things. I doubt Christine could have heard us. Then we had an AHA! & figured out why the cameras were there. I think Kollene hit the nail on the head, they are media savvy now, the family understands that there must be drama in order to keep the series on the air. I even wonder if the pre-panel drama was all part of a made-for-tv plan, and knew there would be this kind of response. So I don't want to assume that any of it represents their natural behaviors or feelings.

You know I was thinking about the first time you were on SW, a season or two ago. When you went to visit the fam in LV so they could (presumably) give you a "taste of what a happy plyg family is like" or whatever their motive was (I know really it was TLC wanting to set up a situation to get those ratings up - it's clear at this point that the Browns don't do ANYTHING out of the goodness of their hearts, there are always selfish motives behind all their actions). I definitely got a SQUICKY feeling at the way Kody interacted with you and the voiceover where he was saying you would be a wife candiate for him. He almost sounded wistful...like he WISHED he was in that position. It definitely creeped me out. I personally would have kept my distance...

and as far as Trainer Sean calling you "fragile"? Um i don't think so. You my dear, are a Steel Magnolia, strong and beautiful. Screw "keep sweet" - it's all about "Stay strong". you go girl!!

Hmmm...we know the Brown family watches their show and that includes Robyn, so maybe she has been seething with jealousy all this time and it boiled over when she saw Koko looking so pretty and sexy in a very unBrownish outfit causing her to lash out at Sweetie.
Koko is everything Robyn is not and never will be: attractive, intelligent, articulate, strong and independent.

  40. I agree with Koko regarding Christine. I honestly dont feel sorry for her or like her anymore. I think the reason Christine was scared of facing her aunt because she knows everything her aunt said was the truth. Chrisine is the one struggling the most since Robyn came and she is scared because she is very close to leaving. She knows if there are people giving her support and encouraging her she will leave. I think if any of the wives are gonna leave, it is going to be Chrisine.

Everything her aunt said, Chrisitne has felt eg. honeymoon and jealousy.

I also think Chrisine knew all along the abuse that goes around in polygymy but since she was raised to believe in it she ignores it. The way she was talking about the struggles of the other side and exaggerating, it seemed like she was making fun of them for being dramatic.

Good for the ones that left. Chrisine can stay in a loveless marriage where her husband fully admitted he is not the least bit attracted to her.

As for robyn, we finally saw the real robyn. If logan went and apologized for behavior then imagine how often she acts like that and how she treats the rest of the family.

I completely agree with your assessment of Christine's drama. I think she is terrified to look the truth in the face. She believes her eternal salvation hangs on staying in this "religion" and chooses to remain blind to any negativity. She has to, in order to stay with kody. I think she was afraid to look her aunt in the face for fear of the truth she would see.

  41. Kolleen, I sincerely hope you feel the love and support everyone here.

Polygamy came on my radar a few years ago when I read portions of Love Times Three, then I found Sister Wives on Netflix, and shortly afterwards found this blog. I'm all about religious freedom when not detrimental and it took me a few seasons to see the growing shadow side of polygamy. It was very clear in the heavily edited episode that the Brown women live plural marriage due to religious beliefs.

In your experience have you found that most religious polygamous are only practicing out of fear of being banished in this life and/or afterwards?

Why do you think the Brown's went public when it's very obvious that they cannot handle the pressures of being the face of polygamy?

Lately I've seen at least two articles on HuffPost about nonreligious couples (I guess trios) who are living this alternative (I use this as it's not religious) lifestyle. Ironically it was a women with a husband and boyfriend. In your experience, do you find polygamy like this just as bad?

You're in my thoughts are you continue to share your story.

I say we could say the same. how is it different..i mean it makes more sense for a woman to be able to have multiple partners over a man. especially if its about getting spirit babies to earth..

  46. Main points I think Koko would like to get across are these:

Teens thinking of going into polygamy should get and read various literature out there before taking the plunge.

This was supposed to be a panel discussion, it was not.

The "Painting us through your experience was, basically, a decided way the Browns were going to play this event, at the expense of others.

It is hurtful to tell your story.

They allowed the Browns to tell their, she would have liked to gotten the same respect when telling her story.

Kollene was there to talk so that if she could save one person from a life of polygamy, it would be worth it to her.

Kristyn Decker is a wonderful woman and she can not understand why Christine was so childlike.

  47. A few episodes back Kody said something about when he thought about doing this show he did not think about the effect "coming out" would have on his children. I couldn't agree more because I think what he failed to realize, what they all failed to realize is that if you put yourself out into the world, the world ends up surrounding you. The Brown children are now surrounded by the world at secular colleges. They will make decisions about their future in full knowledge of alternatives to polygamy. Religious cults don't survive that way. They must cloister their members from knowledge and choices. I believe the Brown children will make the right decisions for themselves, and those decisions might not have been possible for them without the "coming out" this show ultimately gifted them.

  54. Christine could not bear to hear the truth from Aunt Kristin and Kollene who escaped. She grew up in the polygamous life and was taught to be totally helpless and dependent on a man. I'm sure the prospect of leaving all she's ever known is terrifying to her. She is passive-aggressive with Kody. Anger seethes below the surface in her relationship with him. She was his favorite and when he dumped her for a new wife and the reality of polygamous life for women hit her in the face hard. But the idea of going out on her own is beyond her capability. She will forever live a tortured existence of jealousy, anger and unfulfilled yearning for love. Desperately trying to KEEP SWEET.

  60. I don't want to know about Kollene's gory past. I would like to know how she left the group (how did she find out who to contact). Is/was she living with a host family/group home? How do the women who escape learn how to prepare for their new existance? Is she getting an education? What are her career goals? Does she want to remarry and have a family? How long does it take for the women to become independent? Kollene does not mention having children, so I guess she does not have the pressure of providing for children. I think this would be similar to being an infant. There is so much to learn before they can "fly".

I would think that the women living in the compounds are not educated for a purpose. How do they learn about incest (and other things) and that it is wrong? They have been taught that everything the men do is right. In hearing young abused children describe things they suffered, many said they did not know it was wrong because that is the only think they knew and didn't know it was not normal and did not happen in other families.

    So sad.

I have a couple of questions, Kollene:

1.What did you think of the “mediator?” Dr. Dumbass who thinks that only a third of polygamist relationships are dysfunctional? Just another lame attempt on the Browns part to show the non-existent happy side of polygamy?

2.Was anything mentioned on religious doctrine from the Browns or any of the panelists? The Browns are known for being completely unwilling to speak specifics about their religion and doctrine on camera…was anything said at all on the topic?

Thank you, SWB for allowing these individuals to actually let their voices be heard. I am disgusted at the Browns and TLC (camera crews, editors, and everyone involved with this show). Their behavior is deceitful and shameful. The Browns claim their objective is acceptance. What a skewed vision of acceptance you have, when you knowing lure ACTUAL victims of crimes and abuse into a trap and twist their own words to fit your own agenda. Further, the Browns apologies and sympathies to the victims are pure poppycock and show nothing but their ignorance, immaturity, and disrespect. One word…Karma.

-Robin being the newest wife, was not only being overly defensive and aggressive but also condescending all in an attempt to help "secure" her position with-in the family, as always.
-Marys reaction to sharing her husband was to make a stupid joke about it. Because there isn't logical way of defending "sharing" him sexually or emotionally in a way that soothes her so her go to reaction is to make a joke. I found it Sad.
-Janelle was quit but confident and always has the least to say but seems the most intelligent and intellectual.
-Then there's Christine, the one that seems to be the neediest and strives for attention, a lot and is whiney. How many children does she have? She need to GROW UP! Why didn't she just hug her Aunt before the show and tell her she respects her opinion and would appreciate the same from her, PERIOD. But nope, gotta have drama on the show. It's becoming a SOAP OPERA and if I wanted to watch a soap I'd change the channel.
Cody- Needs to work like most men and ALL respectable Fathers in America and quit living off the backs of his religion, wives, children!

TCL is NOW condoning and SUPPORTING their lifestyle by keeping them on. We've seen and learned ALL we need or want to know and then some. Time for them to stand on their own 2 (10) feet and for TLC TO CUT THEM LOOSE, END THE SHOW, SAY SO LONG, etc etc. I know a ton of people who have quit watching..It's a BORING POLYGAMY SOAP OPERA! Im done watching too.

  63. Kollene you rock! I admire you so much for your courage, you are so real and just tell it like it is. Your opinion of both Robyn and Christine seem so dead on. Since you don't watch the show it is even more interesting because what you stated is more or less what we've all also noticed, despite TLC's best efforts to edit them in a positive light. You proved that the Brown's complaints that you are trying to paint them in a negative light to be completely wrong through your honesty, your opinions of both Merri and Janelle were not negative just honest. Can you share with us what your future plans are? Have you considered writing a book? Would you star in a reality show for TLC or another network if the opportunity was presented to you? How close are you with the other panelists, Willie Jessop, Krystin Decker, etc. Do you think that any of them would do a reality show if offered? Thank you again for sharing with us, for your honesty and fortitude, you are truly an amazing young woman and a survivor...your Awesome!

    1. Thank you. I have actually gone to school for master esthetician I start my new job tomorrow. excited and nervous. I want to own and run my own spa one day. med spa type of thing. I have been in a relationship after my ex husband for 2 years and some change. He is amazing and I love him so much, best of all is he loves me and makes me feel like im worth everything. Still not sure about marriage, it left a bad taste in my mouth. but I am happy for those that are happy. Its scary to get married again. I would like at least 3 or 4 kids one day. if it happens it happens. I have considered writing a book. I have been avoiding it because I burried a ton of stuff I dont want to bring back. Yes I would star on a show with certain conditions. I am great friends with willy STEED and I look at Kristyn Decker as a loving grandma Christine Marie has added herself to my collection of moms... meaning she cares for me and wants to help and adopt me. I love every single one of the other panelists. YES I bet they would. THANK YOU!

    2. Congrats on your new job! I'm excited for you.

I think the thing I love the best about this is that you have a dream unrelated to your past that your are embarking on. You are an invaluable asset to the future of saving those trapped in polygamy, but at the same time, you have not allowed your past to define what your future can be.

You are not limited to a future of being "the girl who escaped polygamy" but will make your mark on an industry you love! Good for you!!

  64. I am seeing so many comment about Christine and that many do not "Like" her anymore. I can see and agree with what many are saying. Including Kollene. Christine is a "Drama Queen". But still my heart aches for her. She is truley indoctrinated into the life. I think she may want to leave but is afraid. Afraid that "Outer Darkness" is real. Afraid that she cannot care for her children. Afraid of being alone. I think that she is still childlike and that Kody has continued to keep her this way. It is easier to manipulate a child. Remember how easily her encouraged her to remain a stay at home Mom. He was not happy that she passed her Real Estate Exam. Her necklace is that of a pixie. He wants her to stay childlike and she is going along with her wants. I think as her children grow they will treat her more childlike also. They love her but I don't think they will grow to respect her. All of it makes me sad. I would hope that she will find the courage that these other women have to leave. However I doubt it. Hers is not the horror that they lived. It may not be bad enough to leave. So again that was what was going through my head.

  65. Kollene, I know you got the short end of the stick by TLC and I apologize for it. I would like to know if the plyg Williams family gets their own show, and only if they are truthful in abandoning the church, would you do a panel with them? I ask because they might not share the same beliefs and that you might get a more supportive and better discussion overall out of the conversation with them.

I know only an hour was shown of that family and that you don't watch plyg shows, but this guy seems to be more of a thinker than a salesman and I have a feeling he wouldn't be as rude. If anything I have a deep suspicion that it might be more civilized.

I only ask because I would actually like to see a more intellectual panel/debate that isn't ruined by drama queens.

  67. Kollene, I don't watch this show either because the deceit and manipulation that the Browns use makes me want to vomit. I watched your episodes and I figured there was a TON of editing done. TLC makes me sick for promoting this crap. Most women who live polygamy live it because they are easily manipulated, have low self-esteem, and are usually less educated (I'm not saying they are all less educated, that is just the norm)so they do buy into this crap. It's incredibly disgusting that the Browns would prey on this type of woman, to try and portray this "amazing sisterhood" when it's ALL abusive! Even if there's not physical abuse, there's still emotional abuse going on. Anyway, you know how I feel because your my cousin lol. I just wanted to show my support for this video and to say Rock On!!!

  68. Love2Clip: I do feel bad for Christine too because she is indoctrinated. She IS afraid of outer darkness, and in my experience, when a girl in this lifestyle is married so young, they sort of DO stop maturing. It's a really sad situation.

  80. Koko, usually I read all the standing comments before adding my own, mostly to be sure that I don't simply repeat what a bunch of other people have said. But today I'm just diving right in to respond to your video regarding the most recent episode of Sister Wives.

First, I'm proud of your drive and tenacity and the way you are evolving as a young woman finding her way outside the boundaries in which you were raised. That's not an easy journey, but you're doing it, and you're doing it with your mind as well as your heart.

Second, the comments you offered here absolutely confirm the basic impressions most viewers have of the individual members of the Brown family. Even with "creative editing" taken into consideration, the character qualities as you describe them are pretty clear. A lot of us have a more negative impression of Meri than you do, but you have a first-hand experience with her, and I admire your willingness to base your opinions on facts. I also think Janelle rocks, I think her kids are amazingly squared-away, and I think it would be wonderful if she got out of the plyg life and found a man who loved her, and just her.

Finally, I would say that there is probably not a whole lot to worry about with the Brown kids. I certainly hope none of the girls choose it (though at least one of them might), because even in the so-called "best" plyg homes, there is a lifetime of heartache to look forward to. Those Brown kids, though, are pretty smart, and AT LEAST their parents have allowed them a level of freedom not often glimpsed in fundamental plyg homes... so they've had a chance to taste the real world, and it WILL help them make their future choices.

Keep being the wonderful woman that you are!

  81. There have been glimpses for me with ALL the Brown wives (some of them tiny glimpses, I admit) of a likeable person buried underneath all the weirdness. Today, after watching "My Five Wives" and then watching Kollene speak about filming with the Browns, I have the overwhelming feeling for the Brown women that I'm looking at people infected with a disease.

Every one of them--and actually, Kody too, although the overall daily result for him is far less devastating--has been infected and the various behaviors we see and comment on are simply the symptoms of the disease. Some, like Christine, have been infected since earliest childhood, so her symptoms have twisted her psyche on an even deeper level.

Add to this the disease of 21st century television, pseudo-celebrity fame-whoring, and you might be looking at a terminal condition of the soul. And that's just sad.

  87. Thanks Koko you are wise beyond your years... probably because of the childhood abuses you lived through and I have to wonder now if that is why some of the older Brown kids are wise beyond their years. It appears Christines kids are very sheltered and spoon fed the polygamy line. But, they have eyes and they can see the manipulation and hatred of the wives for each other.
You have helped open more then one person eyes and I hope you continue to be there for helping any others who wish to escape the reality of polygamy compound life. Keep up your work, get a degree in a field you want to be in. You are very pretty and poised and this alone gets the door open your talents for speaking have not yet even been tapped but, you are very young and have those opportunities.
Robbyn is very self centered and self serving and it is scary that Kody is falling for it hook, line and sinker. He appears to have fallen for this damsel in distress that is no such thing other then a drama, manipulative attention whore. She has not been married into this lifestyle all that long and yet she makes her self a narcissistic speaker of the group without ever caring whose feelings she stomps on. She is not shy. She is the snake in the grass the other wives appear to be aware of.
Meri has seemed a little too weepy and poor me for me to like her. I have seen her on the show put on her big girl panties and be a mother and woman though and I respect that.
Why they chose jewellery for a business is beyond me. I thought it was going to be clothing and accessories also and then now all this focus on some really poorly designed crap. Except I will say I like Kodys designs but they are about double what I would pay for one. This will not support their family. And when Robbyn reads this she will be come even more determined to push it down their throats and drive it home.
Janelle should continue her own life separate from the other 3 as a independent agent and thrive. She will be surviving when the houses crumble although maybe only by a thread because the other three could suck it out of her.
It is interesting that you respect Kody. What is it that you respect him for? That he tries to love his 4 wives? Tries to be fair? I think he is pretty middle of the road and I do also believe he no longer believes the whole polygamy bs after visiting and learning more about their saint. The Smith guy that just really wanted in all the womens petticoats without being in trouble from his old lady. Which did not work. But, he did get into a lot of petticoats.
God Bless you Koko for your guts, determination and honesty.

  88. Kody takes really good care of his families....financially. That's about it. He seems like a good provider, but he also seems really immature. Kollene is that what you respect about him?

    2. I can't speak for Kollene, but that statement jumped out at me as well and I spent a while thinking about it. My guess is Kollene respects him because he doesn't physically abuse the women and he allows his children a measure of freedom that was unimaginable to Kollene when she was in the polygamist cult.

      Delete
    3. I see a different view of Kody. I don't think Kody does take good financial care of his family as shown by the many bankruptcies and welfare that they were receiving. He is living high on the hog now and thinks he is some sort of "god" and big name star. He doesn't realize that his train is roaring down the tracks about to hit the TLC Gosselin Wall in a few months to a year. People are losing interest in seeing his smug face, hair flipping and head snapping.

  89. Kolleen,

Thank you for your honesty and your bravery. I am so impressed with your composure and articulate discussion and responses. I am so sorry that our country, our government let you down as a child and as a young woman. That is why we have to continue learning and fighting the abuses of polygamy.

The stories of the women who have left these cults are voices that cannot be ignored -- there must be a better way -- and never doubt that you are changing the world through your continued honesty, and strong free and public speech. You really are a role model I would be proud to call my own daughter or sister.

Keep up your work, and please don't listen to the haters out there. For everything that you have been through, I am so impressed to hear the respect and love that shines through your voice, as it could have turned to a darker resentment, as it is clear some of the "sisterwives" have shown they possess. I believe they could learn so much from listening to you and the other survivors, and hope their hearts, eyes and ears will someday be opened.

The God I know will reward your integrity, faith and love with a pass to his finest afterlife, and respect from many of the rest of us while here on earth. I am curious if you have embraced a different religion since you left the "family/lifestyle/cult?"

  91. Kolleen, you are so young, yet so brave, strong and wise. I am so glad you were able to escape the horrors of polygamy and I only pray that others will follow your lead and make the move to get out. It is terrifying that shows like Sister Wives, My 5 wives, Polygamy USA and even specials like the ones with the Dargers, encourage people to accept Polygamy as normal and okay, even if it is different than what most are used to. Far more cases of abuse are common than a regular family with the only difference being more than one wife. TV shows cannot expose every thing that goes on and through editing things can be lost or hidden.

I do have to say that even with the Browns, it is obvious there is mental abuse going on. First of all with Christine, the entire courtship of Robyn and the first couple years of marriage it was obvious that Christine was an emotional wreck and Kody didn't care a bit. In fact he told her she was over-reacting, that she needed to get over it and he would get angry at her jealousy. That equals mental abuse. Then just last week another prime example of mental abuse was shown. Two years ago Kody and Meri went on their 20th anniversary to Mexico. At the dinner table Kody asked Meri if she would want to try in-vitro. He offered it to her as a gift, right then and there. Meri was unsure about it. Well we finally, 2 long years later, get to the point where Meri is about to tell Kody that she would like to try and Kody tells her that he doesn't want to do it. He pulled this out from under her, like it was nothing, after two years of goading and begging her to do it. That is mental abuse, absolutely 100% abuse, it is the toying and playing with somebody's mind and emotions. I am sure there are many other instances of that same type of manipulation.

Some people are very foolish (apparently they have twitter accounts and follow the Browns) if they believe that the relationship is not one where Kody is in charge and makes the decisions. On the show in the past the Brown family has even said as much, yet now, in the face of accusations of abuse they say that all women have an equal voice, a voice equal to Kody's. Which lie are we supposed to believe?

Keep doing the hard work you are doing. Expose Polygamy for what it is. There is no way this is something that needs to become legal in our nation, if that happens it's a big step back to 1852.

  94. I just wanted to let you know that I admire you a great deal. You are a very strong, mature, independent young woman and you have shown that you posses the strength and determination to become very successful at whatever you chose to do in life. Please keep up the great work of getting you story out there. Not only does your story help to inspire others to get the strength to leave, it also makes those of us with no experience with polygamy see how dangerous that lifestyle is and why it is important to fight against legalization. Many people, myself included when I first found this show, think that polygamy is an issue of live and let live, that they are not hurting anyone and should be left alone. Your story along with others such as Kristen Decker, Flora Jessop and Carolyn Jessop show just how much this lifestyle does harm others. Please also let Willie know that he is admired as well. His face showed so much sadness in the few moments that he was shown that I just wanted to see someone give him a hug and let him know what a wonderful young man he is.

I do have a question for you. I have noticed that most polygamous women on various shows seem to be stuck at an emotional maturity of a girl 12-14 years old. Is there something about the belief system that prevents women from maturing past this point?

But you amazing individuals keep me motivated to speak louder and clearer about the truth! It means so much to me. There have been times where I just wanted to throw in the towel and wash my hands of the order and move on.. but the abuse and pain and brainwashing and control are still going on, more so than before, everytime someone leaves the reigns are pulled tighter. and things become harder to leave, hardest on the family you leave from. that could be a reason why a ton of young people stay, to protect their family from the abuse and to not lose them.. I love you all and I am so glad for all the amazing people that work behind this blog and decided to start up this whole team KoKo thing its amazing where love will take people. ^_^

This isn't a question so much as a suggestion. Based on the traumatic situations you have encountered, I suspect that you are eligible for assistance from the Department of Vocational Rehabilitation. 99. the Browns were defensive because they have to defend to the death that they are not like other polygamist or they will be stigmatized and that would be the end of their endeavor to make a living off of being persecuted.

  100. Kollene,

I hope after reading what all of us has to say, I hope you never feel alone in what you are going thru! You are very gutsy, I know it's not easy for you, but keep on, keepin on!!

  101. I just bought my shirt! I had ordered a Team Christine earlier from TSW's Closet, because I was loving the bitchy Christine, but after the way she acted, I couldn't wear it and hold my head up. Shame, I would feel shame. You did great in the discussion Kollene, and I really admire how you've handled yourself and how much maturity & strength you have shown. You have balls of steel, my dear, and I'll be proud to wear this shirt.

  102. I'm very sorry you went through such horror, Kollene. I think you are very brave.

However, I also believe that consenting adults have the right to choose and follow their religions freely. No, I don't believe religious abuse should be allowed. That's not what I'm saying. Abuse happens in EVERY religion, not just in ones that follow polygamy; abuse happens most in atmospheres of secrecy, and secrecy, in my opinion, tends to frustrate any protections that are already in place. Only by being able to live openly will the abuses be visible and controllable. Restricting people's rights perpetuates the secrecy that adds to the problem of abuse toward children and women in polygamous belief systems. Personally, I am fascinated with Mormon doctrine and beliefs of all kinds, mainstream or otherwise, but I am not a believer myself. I find it mind-boggling that grown women would buy into this patriarchal b.s.--but if they do, then that's their business.

I don't think the Browns are an anomaly. I know too many people to say that. I agree, though, that they do not represent the dark secret side of polygamy that you fled, although they are structured on a patriarchal system I find abhorrent. They are neither the face of evil nor the poster child for good. They're just people, living their lives. Although the Browns may not be the best poster-family for harmonious family life, not too many monogamous couples would be the ideal model for their worldview either. Ideals are meant to be strived for, even if they can't be achieved.

I'm glad you are free, Kollene.

  103. On the TLC SW facebook page someone posted Kollene's response to the panel. They also have a link to Cafepress and the Team Kollene shirts. I think people from this blog should show her some support on facebook. I hate to see some of the Brown groupies drag Kollene through the mud. I am not asking people to trash talk, just support her.

    1. Hi Folks!
I normally do not publish anything about the fan facebook page because they have a right to like the program too. However, Karen has a point.
If you choose to go over and support Kollene, please just email me your responses VS posting them here and I will forward to Kollene. I don't want to post them here. Thanks!
      GO KOLLENE!
If you go over and post, just be supportive, don't lower yourself to trash talk others with differing views. Let them do that, not us. Thanks everyone.

  104. Kolene, I am an abuse survivor and I applaud you for living your life to the fullest through the pain and tears. You are a light for all of us for having the courage to share this with the world. I also would like to give credit to the Browns, and any other polygamists out there for putting themselves in the public eye and unwittingly exposing the truth of this harmful practice and it's obvious detrimental effect on women and children.

I'm so happy you're part of this blog community and these people (men/women) who comment and write the blog are awesome. I love the humor and the sense of community this blog creates. Welcome (hope you went back and read a few reviews).
