Cat Buried Alive in Cement - Alleged Cult Warning from Polygamists?

We touched on this last night in discussions - however, I have to put it up. Anyone, ANYONE that would do the unthinkable to a harmless cat is EVIL in my book. There are many article on the net about this cruelty.
WARNING - Not for the faint of heart, GRAPHIC.

A kitten was found buried in cement in polygamist stronghold of Colorado City recently. Despite efforts to save the cat, it died.

The cat's placement may have been a message from FLDS who do not appreciate outside influence.

There is no way this was an accident; no way the kitten could have ended up encased in cement inside in a pipe on its own.

So who could do such a thing? Andrew Chatwin says it's been going on for years. He claims dead animals have been scattered all over the property of Isaac Wyler, who works on behalf of a Utah Judge in the polygamist towns.A cat was found encased in cement in Ck," Wyler said. "Two Days later, I found this pigeon with its head snapped off."   After being freed from the cement, the kitten was taken to Best Friend's Animal Sanctuary outside of Kanab. Best Friends rescue workers say Thomas' injuries were very severe and that the cat was in constant pain.

  1. Absolutely horribly disgusting. How can people be capable of such cruelty? And we're supposed to feel for them and think they're living wonderful, peaceful lives? Yet they'll torture and murder animals to send a warning?

  5. Imagine what they can do to people! And, arrogant enough to do this act while the DOJ is there. otherwise, we may not ever of heard the news. MSNBC and others would not post it if they didn't BELIEVE FLDS was behind it. I hope they BURN. And remember folks, it was only 50 yrs ago all the Browns kin was FLDS, with the exception of Janelle, she goes back 100.

    1. Blood atonement seems to have been something serious - and still may be as some ex-FLDS lady has said that they can take away the prophet but their belief system is such they will still keep living that way until a new prophet arrives . There are dozens scared for their lives because they told them they'd do blood atonement on them.

Or, if you're a white male then, because the majority of serial killers are white males, you're suspect too. When a person is part of a group, especially where religion is involved, they don't want to believe badly of their group.

Read Krysten Decker's book and spend some hours on youtube, accusations of beatings, abuse, incest are very similar among all women who left (voluntarily or involuntarily) - still believing in the religion or not. 6. Flora Jessop's book was hard to read Footup, as was Escape by Carolyn Jessop.

Shattered dreams, by Irene Spencer had to almost be worse, as her family was sent to Mexico to expand the church and find a place to live and practice there.

The hard thing for me was reading about how very deprived the wives and children were while the husband always had what he wanted and felt he needed.

Polygmay practiced on the levels that are seen in those 2 books are incredibly hard on the wives and children, much worse than what we see in Sister Wives. The medical care is often lacking as are basics we take for granted such as fresh fruits and veggies, a varied diet with some of each food group, books and toys for the children and many times even such items as shampoo and soap.

One such example was in Carolyn Jessop's book - one of Warren Jeff's wives had given birth at Uncle Rulon's home because Warren Jeffs did not want her to go to the clinic at Hildale. When Carolyn went to deliver a baby gift she noted the woman looked like she'd been through hell and was told while they had to 'improvise' a bit everything was okay. The 'improvisation' turned out to be an episiotomy given with sewing scissors and being stitched up with dental floss. What person in their right mind would put their wife through such a thing?

At another point, because Carolyn wouldn't 'stay sweet and obedient' toward her husband, he cut the amount of money she could spend (even though her entire teacher's salary was turned over to him) and she couldn't afford soap or shampoo. At another point all books were removed from homes....it just goes on and on, mostly actions that were taken to further the deprivation of the wives and children so that they were easier to control.

    7. I disagree with you. LOVE Flora Jessop and all she does, and LOVED her book.

    8. I just finished both the Sister Wives' book and Kristyn Decker's book. Kristyn's book was so good I finished it in one day. There were parts of the book that were so intense that I actually felt my heart racing, my body shaking and tears rolling down my face. I had to put the book down several times and come back to it. The part when she describes so eloquently how she had to listen to her husband of 8 years have sex with his new wife just about tore me up. I rolled over and held on to my sweet husband for what seemed like hours. I cannot image the pain of sharing the beautifulness of sexual intimacy with another wife. Her story was so gripping and honest. What that women endured was quite sad. From the child molesting to the verbal/emotional abuse from her husband, it's all just unncessary pain. It's all brainwashing! It starts at birth and it never ends. I just want to help these women get out and know that there are people out there that will love them, and only them... they don't have to share!

    9. Anon 10:12, I had no problem with The Sisterwives book. I am on Kristyn's book now. I started the other day. And so far she has been molested like 3 times. I think it will take me longer to read b/c it makes me sick and I have to put it down.

  11. This atrocity and the abuse of women and children is unbelievable that in this day and age. The mind control that precedes it is unbelievable.
To me, this is why polygamy is wrong. One man who has absolute authority over any number of women and then kids, begins to believe himself invincible by God's hand.

We can get all philosophical and defend this group or that group but in the end there is always pain and suffering for the wives and kids. Whether it's poverty or physical abuse or emotional abandonment, it's always part of the lifestyle.
Very few men are capable of supporting multiple wives which shifts the burden to the wife. Apparently they're inculcated to believe that it's fulfilling to bleed the beast, give the husband child after child for his glory and teach the kids that their worth is also to give him glory. Really?

Kody Brown displays narcissism in the same way that these compound fundamentalists do but he's the slick citified version.
The friend that came to visit them on one of the episodes, who was struggling with the emotional aspects of adding a wife....once even he, a seemingly nice guy, overrides his feelings in order to get to his future planet...do any of us think that the women added to that family would ever really feel truly happy? To be the first of several possibly that could never have his heart like his real wife? Then there would be kids who are possibly not really wanted but "needed".

Not once have I heard, read or seen what I felt could be a plus to this life. If it's ever legal for one, it's legal for all. That's a whole lotta power and control given to one man.
    rant over!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. What I don't understand about "bleeding the beast" is how emasculating it ultimately is to the polygamous men. Isn't the main point of polygamy so that the man can tell himself, his friends and God, "Look what a macho, successful man I am, able to support three wives and 13 kids!" Do the polygamous men not see it like I'm describing?

    2. I'd say yes, not uncommon. Warren Jeffs had all the dogs killed in town at one point. It tests the people's obedience to him and requests that they may not agree with.
In the case of this cat, I think someone is just a sick ass (any one of the men there) or one of the leaders was trying to punish someone (was this a pet of a woman or child that got in trouble?), or scare people into obedience.

    3. In Kristyn Decker's book she discussed how they send messages out to "the group" that they were after blood! In her story she claimed it was because they wanted her group to pay tithes to a specific man (can't remember his name), not keep the money in their tiny church. Rulon Allred was actually murdered due to this warning. They murdered many people in different smaller groups because they didn't send their tithes to this lunatic. Apparently, it's not unusal for this type of idiotic behavior to be displayed.

  14. Okay, back on topic. It's not really surprising that there is such grotesque violence in this community. Why would the girls and women go along with this ludicrous system if not from acquired fear? Why would the young "lost boys" agree to leave, and why would their mothers agree to their sons being run off? Brainwashing only goes so far. It's not unheard of that when a man abuses his wife, he also abuses the animals in the house.

If they can do this to animals, imagine what they can do to people? Any way you look at it, Men definatly think they are above anything. I literally threw up in my mouth when I saw this abuse on TV. I think it is fair to point out, unlike most US religions, the men automatically go to "heaven" wherever their heaven is.
So, therefore, from a young age these boys are taught they are above the law and can do what they want. Abuse is commen place. Why did this poor animal have to die? To prove a point? It also makes them look like passive agresive mad men. Now, that point does pass through all poligamy sects.
What else do they do to animals?
I pray for all animals and people in their wrath. POOR KITTY. An abomination.

And to the person who was wondering about the laws on animal abuse...I'm in a southern state, animals have no legal value, someone can shoot your pet and not a thing will be done, nothing. I'd say it's similiar there and that's why they often choose animals to "make" their point. They know they can easily get away with it.

I can't watch this, I can't even look at the picture. If this is what they are capable of then I would not be surprised at all to find out the baby cemeteries are some kind of sick population control.

  26. Can't watch the video, but glanced thru the comments. 1. In Muslim culture (not religion!) women get killed to save their family's honor if they for example: gets raped, falls in love, doesn't dress as her fashionable brothers like, doesn't wear a headscarf or if there is a RUMOR she did something "unacceptable".
      .
I have heard escapees talk about blood atonement, but only for women that escape(d) the cult. Some are still scared as hel

      Delete
    2. JoJo none of the books I've read describe anything like honor killings. I'm not sure why they've not gone that far, although there have been feuds in the various sects where people have been murdered - mostly when a particular 'prophet' has decided to seize power through a 'vision' from God.

At least, that's what I took from the books - and I've read quite a few of them.

      Delete
    3. Its debateable-it does seem the reason for some of the LeBaron sect killings were 'blood atonement' for dishonouring husbands or being too outspoken/bubbly as a woman. I have also heard rumours of 'disappeared' women in the FLDS, partly for being too outspoken against Warren Jeffs but also for being too 'modern' in dress and behaviour. Lobotomized I wish you would not refer to it as 'muslim' culture, even though you do make a distinction between culture and religion it still isn't accurate. There is no such thing as Muslim culture just like you cannot say any one particular lifestyle in any country is 'Christian culture'. Like I mentioned before these acts are as common amongst other religions in such cultures, for example in Jordan, Syria and Lebanon Christians partake in honour killings just as much as Muslims. Also known a few Sikh girls who have a price on their head as family hired someone to kill them, for the audacity of marrying someone they chose and/or changing their religion and same goes for some of the less educated amongst the hindus. I knew a hindu girl from a small town in the North of England; she was drugged and forced to marry with a knife in her back, had she not gone through with it she knows she would no longer be here. A Yemenite Jew I used to know told me they have exactly the same culture as the Muslims in that country and he lamented that they actually originated some of the cultural practices because they were there first, he said he hates his culture because of what it does to women. Same with Kurds; some are Muslim but some are Jewish, Christian and Yazidi (a pre-Islamic religion), all of them have the same messed up system of honour and retribution. The same could be said for Albania though honour killings are applied equally there to men and women, they are also equally common amongst the Catholics and the Muslims. I was reading in national Geographic that historians reckon the whole system of honour and killings in retribution for someone having disrespected or dishonoured your family, found amongst the various Mafias in Italy originated in neighbouring Albania. Fascinating stuff.

  27. They tortured this cat, made sure that the people knew the cat was alive and being tortured. To inflict deliberate cruelty is unforgivable. The shelter to which the cat was taken was Best Friends Sanctuary in Utah. The got a show on one of the cable channels for a couple of years. They seemed like such a good organization (and I investigate) that I sent them money and suggest you do as well. It's a good place to leave good karma. The poor thing was in such pain that it was put down after some days. It would have been cruel to leave it in pain any longer. Again, a nice contribution might make you feel better. 28. Couldn't watch, reading was enough. What is also chilling is that pet abuse is an indicator of the likelihood of crimes against humans. An NY Times article has this to say

"animal cruelty has long been recognized as a signature pathology of the most serious violent offenders. As a boy, Jeffrey Dahmer impaled the heads of cats and dogs on sticks; Theodore Bundy, implicated in the murders of some three dozen people, told of watching his grandfather torture animals; David Berkowitz, the “Son of Sam,” poisoned his mother’s parakeet."

    Full article at http://www.nytimes.com/2010/06/13/magazine/13dogfighting-t.html?pagewanted=all

    2. Might be able to get DNA but unless the police can match against a known offender it doesn't help much.

Was thinking about the questions about blood atonement. This definitely is a belief amongst these polygamist groups, whether they act on it or not. However, since the FLDS completely disregard civil law, and put "god's law" first, I see no reason why they should not still be killing in the name of religion. They live in communities apart from mainstream life where it would be relatively easy to make people disappear. People are being moved around all the time and it would be easy to say that they have been called to go elsewhere by Warren, or have been banished to "repent from afar." There is a lot of wilderness to hide bodies. Does anyone remember news reports of a furnace being built in the Texas compound temple? - the specs were for incredibly high temperatures. I discounted it as wild rumor - but then again I thought that the "temple bed" was a fabrication too - how wrong I was!

    3. I hate to say this MS but I doubt they will investigate that hard. After all it's only a cat. It doesn't seem that a lot of people care about animal cruelty.

  29. Viscious and cruel. It never ceases to horrify me what things people do 'in the name of God'. Keep in mind these are the people who think Warren Jeffs is a prophet. I guess if you consider a man who marries a 12 year old a prophet it's not a big step towards acting so mercilessly towards a helpless and innocent creature. I say this is a cult and needs to be forbidden. The right to religious freedom cannot take priority over the right to life and freedom of choice. These people are trying to take away others' freedom through intimidation.

    ReplyDelete
  30. We know that in most polygamous communities women are objectified. If men will objectify women to the status of chatel, trading them at will, removing them from one pen and putting them in another, then why in the world would we even consider that they would see an animal as deserving considerations. Carolyn Jessop wrote how all the dogs were rounded up and killed or taken to shelters. These are typical agents of mind control. If they can make you kill your pet, if they can make you give your baby to a man as a wife, if they can remove parents from children or children from parents, then why would we think, for one minute, they would respect or sanctify the life of a kitten.
Nothing surprises me with these people.

Apparently, police and other law enforcement are also members of the same religious group and they rather follow order from the prophet than obeying the law! It was even said in the past by escapees, if a 16 year old wife of an old fart escapee (a 16 y/o with an adult is legal rape), the police instead of arresting the old guy, will go search for and drag back the girl!

They also don't want the bad publicity. But until they do go after them, they are painted with the a similar brush. They must go after this problem whole-heartedly. There are dozens of fundamental split-offs, AUB being one of them.
Of course, even within the FLDS there are good people, but the social pressure is huge. Especially when the prophet orders something, it basically means a command from God himself, so you better obey or you are a heretic.

  35. I wish there were more details on this case. How did the man find the kitten? Is there an estimate as to how long the kitten was there? Who videotaped the rescue, and broke it out of concrete?

It seems to me that, if members of the FLDS did this, the entire town knows who the culprits are. They're all in each other's business. Any stranger who drives into that town is promptly followed by police. You can't tell me that nobody noticed a crying kitten being submerged in concrete. Solving this mystery could be as simple as determining which family's cat had kittens recently, and who has access to a concrete maker.

    1. Hah! Since in these communities all the cats are continually having kittens and nearly the entire male population is in construction (including kids) it won't be that easy a mystery to solve, ChickenzRUs3

  36. Bring 'em up here to Minnesota, in the dead of winter. Let's see how long they last with their feet in cement buckets - the ones who did this.

  37. I am from Southern Utah, not far from Colorado City, and I recently asked my friend who lived in the Colorado City community for a couple years about the animal cruelty in the area. He explained that killing animals is a common act done out there and even gave details as to how the dogs/cats would be killed. He mentioned a few years back Warren Jeffs demanded that his followers rid of their pets, and there were mass killings of animals. He has been an ex polygamist since he was a young boy, but the stories I hear from that place are just heart wrenching.

  38. A cat was tortured and it died. That is very sad. The people responsible are sickos. The talk of bringing in CSI and putting the culprits in buckets of cement seems pretty extreme considering the "treatment" unborn babies recieve from doctors at the mother's discretion in America.

    1. Gretel, I have to agree to disagree. Some of us are animal lovers. And regardless of the fact that it was just a kitten. The fact is that it was tortured and murdered. If someone would do that to a defenseless animal what would they do to a human? And I don't recall the post being about unborn babies!

    2. More importantly would be to pin in on the FLDS instead just of "talk" and SHOW for SURE how awful they are, that's the point.

  39. I think there is a link between this and how many children "die" the numbers are horrifhttp://sisterwivesblog.blogspot.com/2011/07/polygamy-natural-ratio-of-men-to-women.htmling.

  40. I just saw this post. I can't watch the video. I started to but when I heard and then saw that sweet kitten in pain (crying) I had to stop. I just cried and it still upsets me. I thought it was bad when I thought an animal was buried like that but for some reason I was thinking that it had already died. I guess I just didn't want to think or fathom so much cruelty. You hear about stories of "monstrous" acts but actually seeing suffering from such an act, it is very disturbing.

Let me understand this, this was done by someone in the Mormon community? How can they justify this on ANY level? I have a friend that is Mormon (not this form or sect) but they believe in God and Jesus. How can the person/people that committed this act, think that this would not be considered a sin? Maybe I missed it but are the authorities investigating this, SERIOUSLY?

  41. As someone who has always adopted dogs from a shelter, and having had two dogs who were abused before being rescued, this type of story just makes me sick. I can't imagine anyone being able to do this to any animal. I couldn't watch the video. Hardly could read the article. While I know this relates back to the whole polygamy topic...I can't even begin to relate to that as I am so horrified that a person could do something like this and live with themselves.

-- I am a long time reader of the blog and had recently posted my first comment a reply under "anonymous" ... but this is the first time I've picked a name. With all the topics discussed on here...the animal cruelty finally made me post a 'real' comment --

  42. A reminder again, this should be about the abuse that goes on in the polygamists communities. Topics like Books, general history, might be better put under the post
"A.U.B. Wife Speaks Out Against Polygamy" Let's stay on topic. I have allowed a few, but please stay on topic.

  43. It would be interesting to see some PETA involvement in this. Not that I'm a huge fan of them but at the very least it would generate a lot of negative publicity about these people and I'm sure they would prefer to stay out of the public eye.

    1. Great Thought! I want to see the perpetrators found. FLDS gets away with all so many evil tasks, but never prosecuted. Funny they never sue the papers for false info.

    2. I just found this article:

PETA offers reward in case of kitten buried in concrete near Utah border
“Harassment” » Animal was near the home of a prominent critic of Warren Jeffs-led polygamous sect.

      go Peta!

    3. Glad to see them getting involved. Sadly, I am afraid it won't do much. I so pray some FLDS wanting out will contact them and tell them the truth, and PETA help that family get out. Wouldn't that be great, to help both?

    4. Maybe we should take that article and post it on our Facebook pages and get the word out.

  44. The whole issue is abomination.
They get by in in the bible by the lord saying man was over all the animals on earth. I've seen it myself. Glad I am out.

  45. I cannot stand things like this. It is just so vile and disgusting. I can't watch the video because it's just so heartbreaking. So unnecessary :(

  46. I am not even going to try watching the video either. Are we sure that these animal deaths are related to the polygamist culture? It seems like a very disgusting and evil way to put a point across.
