UPDATED: POLYGAMY USA ADDED...Where are those Sister Wives? Mother's Day Treat!

Lots of tidbits on this post, feel free to discuss any shown or whatever is on your mind!

ADDED: POLYGAMY USA Tues. (S01E02) “The Winter Ball”

Living in a fundamentalist Mormon community, young men and women don't have many opportunities to socialize. An exception is the town's New Year's Eve celebration. Arthur puts his boys to work decorating the hall. When the work is done, the boys put on their best for the single women. The oldest Cawley daughter, Rose Marie, is nervous to attend. She's hoping to receive her inspiration from God about whom she should marry, and the ball provides an opportunity— if she can get over her shyness.

  1. I want to say.... PRAISE GOD for the release of the three women in Cleveland, and child. Charles Ramsey Rocks, and now another wants the fame, but he's the real hero. I can't imagine what those mothers went through, well some of them. I can't believe Michelle Knights mom just moved away, and no one stayed on the police about it. I saw that Gina's mom was adopting her, how wonderful.

    2. I live in Ohio and had such a hard time thinking they were so close...yet so far from their loved ones. I saw that Michelle Knight was going to be adopted by Gina DeJesus' family. Poor girl, neither mother nor grandmother pushed police, and she wasn't even listed as missing. Charles Ramsey's redub "Dead Giveaway" is funny!

    3. I was a Charles Ramsey fan until I heard he has been arrested 3 times for beating his wife and also for not paying child support. Yes, he did save the girls and deserves the credit but no wife beater will be a hero in my eyes!

    5. Even his ex wife says they have made amends, and it is all in the past. He isn't that person anymore. I am glad that people don't judge me by past actions. I think people can change.

    1. I was trying to help the Kodouche help with his Mother's Day pendants for each of the Sister Moms. I figured with his limited emotional means and his love for social media, he would turn to emoticons to fully capture each of his Kodypendent's distinctive personalities. After Robyn and Meri, he would have run out of steam and simply designed Christine and Janelle's using their wife numbers.

"This one is for my lovely wife, Janelle. She's....uh...number 2"

  3. They updated their MSWC facebook page the other day. I thought for sure someone would have talked about it over here already. I only visit this page every few days. Here's the update:

"We have a lot of exciting things going on here at MSWC! We have been listening to our customers and created a new line of jewelry that will be more budget friendly."

"For all of those who are asking....a new season of Sisterwives be airing this summer. As soon as we know the exact date we will post it here or please keep watching TLC details."

    1. Was just looking at all the selection at Cafe Press by Twisted.... you have so many offerings! Why can not the Browns also offer many items at decent prices? I really wanted to buy something but nothing they have even interests me a little. I always end up at Amazoo or Limoges picking out a new affordable sterling silver piece.

Starting to think this is their last season though... so long since the previous one.

  4. Loved Meri's "charm" (although I hate putting her name beside the word charm, as she has none). So, do the kids celebrate Mother's Day with their bio moms only, or do they do something special for/with their "bonus" moms? Happy Mother's day to all on the blog, and be grateful you don't have to spend it in the shadow of preening Kody!

  5. I was looking at the poster, which is very clever! and trying to make a love boat character comparison work: Robyn for Gopher (the dim one); Christine for Julie (the "activities coordinator"), but I couldn't make it happen. I think that is because all of the characters on the show had love and fun in their lives and our sisterwives do not. Is there another show that would work in terms of their "characters"?

    1. This poster was really made for one of our future Vegas-trip group members, AZChristian, as she left on her cruise. I sent it into the blog for fun, so it might not make sense to everyone, just for funnies. The Kodypendants aren't meant to represent any of the Love Boat characters specifically, really just for placement purposes. I honestly didn't put any real thought into it!

      Delete
    2. How sweet, TSW . . . thank you!

I watched an episode of The Love Boat while cruising. I'd forgotten just how corny that series was. Almost as corny as Sister Wives. Almost.

I'd have to say that Kody is most like Doc. He thinks EVERY woman has the hots for him.

    3. That makes Meri the captain - since she's in charge - or Isaac, the (wet) bartender. I'm sure she THINKS she's good at listening to other people's problems. Remember when Christine went to her with her feelings of jealousy and rejection.... and Meri so helpfully told her to keep sweet?

  6. OMG.....I love these, very creative. Robyns' my favorite too, Meris' is dead on. Thanks for this best thing I've seen in awhile. As for the new post about the new jewelry line coming soon......about time but I'm not expecting much considering what we have seen from them already. Happy Mothers day to all my fellow SW followers. 1. Just out of curiosity, has Mariah or Aspyn announced where they are going to,college yet? Graduation day should be right around the corner. I know Mariah said that she wanted to return to Utah but I don't think she would go to BYU, though since a lot of her friends are LDS, maybe she would like to go there, if they do.

    2. First and LastWifeMay 12, 2013 at 5:36 PM

I was wondering the same thing. Usually kids like to brag about where they're going before graduation. Haven't heard anything. BYU could be a possibility for Mariah considering she's the smart one and has taken her education much more seriously than other kids. Or at least that's how it was portrayed on the show. Last season we saw Mariah get an award from the National Honors Society. BYU is a private university which usually means EXPENSIVE! So if she's able to pull a scholarship than maybe. But I don't think she has any interest in that school. Either last season or the season before she seemed pretty obsessed with SSU? I believe that's the college she kept talking about. South Salt Lake University, if memory serves, is all she could talk about. In the first season she expressed interest in the naval academy in Annapolis. We shall see!

Aspyn on the other hand? Well, she's definitely Christine's child. Cute & upbeat but kind of a wild card so who knows. If she goes to school at all, she expressed interest in Logans school UNLV. I'm sure it'll all be on a future episode. Just not next season.

      Delete
    3. Mariah tweeted a picture of the BYU online application last year. She was at the question that asked if she were a member in good standing in LDS and I think it even asked about polygamy. She was brought up as AUB and Kody and his parents were excommunicated from LDS so I don't think BYU would welcome her because she doesn't meet their admission standards.

      Delete
    4. Is BYU a private college? Can they discriminate based on religion?

    5. First and LastWifeMay 12, 2013 at 6:37 PM

I remember watching something on the H2 channel a couple years ago about the state of Utah and there was a brief discussion about BYU. A lot of students interviewed were young married couples & talking about how common it was to marry young and attend the university together. I remember thinking it was a predominantly LDS school considering the location and the schools founder. But I was surprised to learn that a good percentage of students weren't Mormon at all. A lot were of different religions and cultures. So how is it that they can accept "outsiders" (for lack of a better word at the moment) but Mariah wouldn't meet there standards based on how she was raised? A better question would be, why would it matter if she was a member in good standing in the LDS or not if they admit other people besides LDS?

      Delete
    6. I've always heard BYU was difficult to get into. That was pre 1978. Post 1978 revelations, I know some of their athletes are African American and not Mormon. I've read that they have to sign a very strict code of conduct, which if they violate, they are expelled.

Now, here is BYU's Admissions Philosophy (http://saas.byu.edu/tools/b4byu/sites/b4/?new-freshman/acceptance-criteria2/)

"The Mission of Brigham Young University—founded, supported, and guided by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints—is to assist individuals in their quest for perfection and eternal life. That assistance should provide a period of intensive learning in a stimulating setting where a commitment to excellence is expected and the full realization of human potential is pursued. (‘The Mission of Brigham Young University')

"To this end, the university seeks qualified students of various talents and backgrounds, including geographic, educational, cultural, ethnic, and racial, who relate together in such a manner that they are ‘no more strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints, and of the household of God' (Ephesians 2:19). It is the university’s judgment that providing educational opportunities for a mix of students who share gospel values and come from a variety of backgrounds and experiences is an important educational asset to BYU."

Here's BYUs College PrepList for High School seniors:

      College Prep Checklist
•Live the standards of the LDS Church
•Attend and graduate from LDS seminary
      •Enroll in quality coursework (recommendations)
      •Get involved with extracurricular activities
•Keep in mind the cost—save money!

And here is BYUs Honor Code:

Brigham Young University, Brigham Young University—Hawaii, Brigham Young University—Idaho, and LDS Business College exist to provide an education in an atmosphere consistent with the ideals and principles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. That atmosphere is created and preserved through commitment to conduct that reflects those ideals and principles. Members of the faculty, administration, staff, and student body at BYU, BYU—Hawaii, BYU—Idaho, and LDSBC are selected and retained from among those who voluntarily live the principles of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Observance of such is a specific condition of employment and admission. Those individuals who are not members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are also expected to maintain the same standards of conduct (except church attendance.) All who represent BYU, BYU—Hawaii, BYU—Idaho, and LDSBC are to maintain the highest standards of honor, integrity, morality, and consideration of others in personal behavior. By accepting appointment on the faculty, continuing in employment, or continuing class enrollment, individuals evidence their commitment to observe the Honor Code standards approved by the Board of Trustees "at all times and . . . in all places" (Mosiah 18:9).

And finally, to answer the question "So how is it that they can accept "outsiders" (for lack of a better word at the moment) but Mariah wouldn't meet there standards based on how she was raised?" here is the first bullet in BYUs Comprehensive Admission Review: (http://saas.byu.edu/tools/b4byu/sites/b4/?new-freshman/acceptance-criteria2/)

Every new freshman applicant undergoes the following review process:
1.The first consideration in the review process is the ecclesiastical endorsement. Each applicant must be endorsed by his or her ecclesiastical leaders as one who is worthy to attend BYU and is living in harmony with the Honor Code and the Dress and Grooming Standards (BeSmart.com/honorcode). Applicants who are not members of the LDS Church need to be interviewed by an LDS bishop.

What I find interesting is that Mariah has tweeted about her Mormon friends and apparently she is attending church services with them. So, is this her way of getting approved for BYU?

      Delete
    7. I just went back into her tweets and I can't see her pictures on lockerz but she tweeted to someone that she was looking at two schools in Utah, neither of them being BYU. I believe one was Northern Utah University.

      Delete
    8. As a BYU grad, I can say that there are plenty (but relatively few) non-LDS students at BYU. They accept a lot, but it's a large commitment to live the Honor Code and be in Utah, etc. for a non-LDS student. As a non-LDS applicant, she would not need to have graduated from LDS seminary, and her interview with a bishop would consist of a get-to-know-you type thing, asking if she could live the Honor Code, and that's really it. They do not need to attend LDS church (although once on campus there is a hardly enforced rule that you have to go to church so many times/semester although I don't know the number and I've never heard of it being an issue, nor does it have to be LDS- if you're a different religion they only ask you live that religion and the standards of the Honor Code).

Also, I actually had a polygamist as a roommate and she would go home and visit, so it has been done (although her family was "independent" and she actually didn't even agree with her family, so that could be part of it.) My non-member friends that applied got in with below-average stats actually, probably because they're unique and add to the diversity.

I thought the schools in Utah she liked were either UVU (same area as BYU), U of U or SUU. Considering comments her parents have said about the LDS, I highly doubt she would go to BYU (I'm also speculating on grades....)

As an FYI- UVU accepts essentially everyone (with the cheapest tuition I've heard of), I have no idea about SUU (although I've heard it's cheap and relatively new), and U of U and BYU are competitive.

Also- I saw something on tuition. Tuition is calculated by if you are a member or not. If you are- tuition is dirt cheap. My full time costs were about 2500/semester. It is slightly (although not much) higher for non-LDS students, just because the Church subsidizes the cost.

    9. Great info on BYU Anon! I don't think she could handle being in a university setting with people who believe her parents are doing it all wrong. With her being somewhat high profile, she will stand out and she will have to deal with those who are against polygamy (at least on earth, that is). They get a pass in Vegas b/c it's a liberal, live and let live type of reaction. I don't think she's going to get that at BYU. And I know her parents know this. If she didn't want to be a sister wife, it wouldn't be a big deal. But it's hard to face critics no matter who you are. You have to stand firm and know without a shadow of a doubt what you believe. She's very young and still going on her parents' faith. She will have to develop her own, which may end up being like theirs, but right now I don't think she's strong enough in her convictions to handle criticism well. Why was she not there in the episode with Koko? I'm guessing Meri said no.

      Delete
    10. I think you are right that Meri said NO to Mariah going on that trip. I don't think Aspyn should have gone either, but they needed a Brown teen that wanted to be a plural wife some day ... if I remember, wasn't she on the fence about plural marriage? To me it seemed Maddie was traumatized during the experience and Logan was just...Logan. If anything, it was the parents (Kody, Meri, Robyn, Janelle and Christine) who needed to go on that trip and w.o.r.k. for a change, especially Meri, Robyn and Kody. Christine already knows Kody is a bastard from the way he treats her. I'll give Janelle a pass because she did send her 2 oldest children on the trip.

  11. Wow, Lorin's story is awful and sad. However, when he said he has 25 kids and not one was rebellious, well, that explain why they are so willing to be sheep and herded away from their family. When you raise kids to accept the cult leader as a God, don't expect them to choose you over the leader. I feel so bad for people involved in these situations, it is a vicious cycle spanning generations.

  14. Just out of curiosity I went onto the Sisterwives FB page. Their fans are nuts. Several of them want to be married to Kody and one of them found Kody sexy. I threw up in my mouth. Just gross. They all wanted to know when the show was coming back on. They were having withdrawal symptoms. Yuck. I just want to know how they are going to pay for their 4 McMansions. Kody is probably sweating bullets and driving the producers of TLC crazy. They have been in the homes a little over 5 months. Those bills are surely piling up. I would like to know what the monthly expenses are for each household. Do they have health insurance, car insurance on the kids. My car insurance was extremely high when I had 2 teenage boys at home. Larger homes cost more to cool in the summer, I wish that I was a fly on the wall at their family budget meeting. Unless they paid cash for these homes and have hidden assets, I don't know how they can afford this lifestyle. The polygamy show on the other night showed a husband working out of state in order to get higher wages. This man was gone about 5-6 weeks at a time. They did the show for money. They mentioned that they are struggling financially. King Kody is not a whiz when it comes to money. Did he hit a jackpot in Vegas.

    ReplyDelete

    1. He sure sure did hit a jackpot. It's a show called Sister Wives on TLC.

      Delete
    2. Apparently TLC is ready for that jackpot to stop paying out. Papa Joe said on his blog that they won't be doing a TV show because TLC didn't want another Sister Wives, only more shows like Breaking Amish. I guess the other networks were a little crazy for the Dargers.

      Delete
    3. Completely agree. It's May and I expect that the temperatures are starting to rise in Vegas. It is going to cost a pretty penny to cool four homes of that size, especially with second floors and soaring ceilings. I hope they have health insurance for their brood, but doubt it. If not, they will be fined under Obamacare soon enough.. Break out your wallet, Kody. The expenses keep adding up.

      Delete
    4. Kody doesn't have a wallet. All the money that he gets his hands on goes straight to fulfilling his whatever need of the moment, or to one of the countless one-time-splurges or toys. Whatever is left gets spend on Disney, vacations and dinner.

  15. I watched some of the first Sister Wives shows on Netflix this past week...wow. The original 3 were far happier before Sobbin Robbin came on the scene. And that house in Lehi was perfect for the original 3, connected yet still having separate living spaces. I wonder if they ever wish they could go back in time?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I am sure Christine wishes they had never added Robyn or done the show. I bet Meri and Janelle wish Robyn hadn't joined the family as well, but they are enjoying the money from the show.
It is crazy to see how happy all the wives looked in the first season compared to now, a lot of the kids looked happier too. No matter what they say, you can tell just based off how much Meri's weight has changed. Both Christine and Meri had a sparkle to them in the beginning too.
Robyn, moving, and this show has destroyed this family. I guess it is a double edged sword because without adding the fourth wife I doubt they would have gotten the show and had this many seasons, but they would still be happy. It was totally irresponsible of Kody to take on a fourth wife knowing that it would be spreading himself too thin.
And as a wife, could you imagine having to put up with Robyn's emotional manipulation for the rest of your life?

    1. I admire him for standing up for himself. In the face of such extreme devotion to Jeffs, that took real courage. I had been so wrapped up in thinking about the abuses heaped on the women and children involved that I had forgotten cases like this exist that displace the fathers. I know we've all said it before, but it bears repeating, Warren Jeffs is just a twisted and monstrous kind of evil being. All the time in the world to reflect on what he has done has done nothing to chasten his conscience, and he has only admitted once that he never was a prophet on camera. He's just a waste of air.

      Delete
    2. I'm sorry for Lorin Holmes too, but I think that Warren Jeffs has become the scape goat for everything wrong with the FLDS. People forget that that the previous leader, Rulon Jeffs was OK with underage marriages too, and looked the other way about child abuses. That has been going on in the FLDS for decades.

      Delete
    3. And people forget that these folks have a Bible and can read it for themselves and decide whether or not to believe it. Mine doesn't say a thing about prophets named Jeffs or Smith or whatever. I feel like I do about the SW ... you chose this way of life, so deal with what comes with it ... Good or bad!

      Delete
    4. AnonymousMay 15, 2013 at 8:11 AM According to what I read (I think it was Brent Jeff's book-one of the nephews Warren raped), was that Rulon paid off a family of one of Warren's victims (someone he molested while living in SLC, IIRC-before the FLDS members were commanded to leave their homes and live in Short Creek/YFZ Ranch. It wasn't always mandatory to wear prairie dresses or live in the same community. Carolyn Jessop's family used to live in SLC before the crack down).

I've found a disturbing parallel between the AUB/FLDS-the leaders either pay look the other way, pay hush money, threaten, or partake in pedophilia themselves. The wives don't believe the children are believe they are lying in order to get someone to pay attention to them :(

I thought it was really strange that each wife had their own bedroom and so did the husband, but the wives spend the night in the husband's bedroom when it is their night. I couldn't help but think isn't that weird for the wife, wouldn't you want the sheets to be changed nightly? There is no way you could get me to sleep in the same bed my husband had just had sex in with his other wife.

    2. Anon 1:16, YES! I noticed the resemblance, and posted last week about it. I'm really wondering how closely she and Meri are related. I think Marlene's resemblance to Meri is why I just can't like her. I know that's incredibly shallow of me, but I can't help it. I am enjoying the show though because they are showing aspects of this religion that just aren't shown on Sister Wives. I'm praying that none of the people we've recently been introduced to start whining for a wet bar or talking about having their feelings validated. My head would probably explode.

      Delete
    3. Yes I agree completely about the dynamic between the two women. Becca mentioned that she feels sorry for the man in the relationship because he has to deal with his wives complaining about jealousy and that just made me so sad for her. Kody and his wives all like to brag that they are so empowered because they are sassy and have no problem telling Kody whats what but at the end of the day you are going to be left out when he spends time with another wife and when you die their faith teaches it is up to the man to pull you through to heaven. Empowered or incredibly deluded, hmmmmmmmm.

      Delete
    4. Totally agree about the disturbing sexual undertone between the the three of them! Take the night out at the restaurant, for instance, when Isaiah mentioned that the girls looked cozy together, and one of them invited him to join them in a coy, flirty voice.

Glad I'm not the only one noticing it. :)

I actually agreed with Lisa Ling who commented during her special that they could be the poster family for polygamy. Watching them over the past two episodes has definitely changed my mind. They are clearly not happy. I honestly question if the girls genuinely like each other or barely tolerate each other.

    3. Oh but Anon, remember that their fans were all but foaming at the mouth for those precious, iconic ornaments? I think the Browns are gonna be left with a s**tload of ornaments, which they maybe paid a buck apiece for.

      Delete
    4. Meri hyped up their overstock of ornaments by saying they were almost sold out...customers wanted more! so what they have left is just unsold overstock she is trying to unload...in her mean meri kind of way

    5. They're ridiculously lame!! It's May & should
be offering 2013 Ornaments since the holidays will be here soon. But afterall this is the Browns we're talking about. They just can't seem to get their shit together & get it right. They have no business savvy whatsoever!!!

    6. If they need to get rid of them, then mark them down 50% like any other merchant would do. They'll still make a profit, especially on their overpriced shipping rates.

I'm sure we'll see their 2013 ornament (if we do) available on their site by 21 December. typical.

    7. I was keeping track of that iconic 2012 ornament...

On 3/4/13 there were 138 ornaments (according to their website)
On 3/19/13 there were 124 ornaments
On 5/14/13 there were 111 ornaments

Those things are just FLYING off Meri's shelf. DJ you are so right, a real merchant/businessperson would have marked them down 10%, 25%, 50% to sell quickly. People love sales. This just goes to show what idiots they are at business. To quote CB "THey have no business savvy whatsoever!!!" Ditto !! How can they advertise those new items shown on that news show, but not have them on sell for Mother's Day??? What kind of fools are these people?

FYI The Dargers have their own website selling polygamist crafted items and they are offering FREE SHIPPING.

      Delete
    8. CJ I'm really being generous that the Browns actually paid a buck apiece for these ornaments. I'm guessing that since they ordered a run of 500 (which I would be willing to BET were made outside the US - probably found some vendor on Alibaba.com working out of Asia to manufacture them) they probably paid more like 50 cents each. I mean, they're just a piece of stamped metal really.

"What kind of fools ARE these people?"
also begs the question "What kind of fools would buy anything from these people?"

and it kills me - "Polygamist crafted items"? Do they have a certain style like the Amish or Quaker style furniture??? Are they crafted with their toes? is there a special chic of having someone who happens to share a husband with other women knitting a baby cap over say, my mom's knitting?? please... what's next, items crafted exclusively by left-handed people?

    9. crap...I've missed out on a marketing strategy??! I need to go back through the CafePress shop and label everything as '100% Monogamist-crafted' or 'no monogamists were harmed in the making of these iconic ornaments'.

  23. I agree with Anon 1:16 above, I thought Isaiah's first wife did strongly resemble Meri. I also think there is something unsettling and odd about Michael Cawley. But that Hyrum - he is completely adorable! I can't believe he isn't married.

On "Polygamy USA" they state over and over that it's the woman that has to receive inspiration to marry a man, and the man has no choice but to sit and wait. I don't really recall the Browns talking about "marriage" in those terms...didn't he and Meri actively pursue Robyn? Did all four wives approach Kody? Maybe they did and it's just that I don't see Kody as being particularly humble about the way his wives came into his lives. I can't see him sitting idly by, well into his 40's, waiting on women to come to him. He's no wallflower, our Kody.

Did I mention that I think Hyrum is completely adorable?:)

  24. As I told Cynical, they just make the rules up as they go, don't they?
    Arthur is scary. Period.
These girls get an "inspiration"? hmmm.... In my day it was called "the hots for" and these poor boys, have to take whomever wants them? This is some strange perversion to keep the young ones in the group and make it grow.
Can't date? Nothing like marrying someone you don't know! Seems old New England barbaric to me.

    1. "The hots for..." Yes, that sounds about right Mister Sister.:)

I'm trying to understand these strange polygamy rules...a man gets more than one woman - in fact, the more the better - yet the women have to have "inspiration" to marry the man. It seems like a justification of sorts. A man can be the big rooster on campus with 17 wives, and crow proudly that they all flocked to him. Yet what woman in her right mind would say she was "inspired" to become a 5th, or 8th, or 11th wife?

I watch these shows because I want to understand, but the more I watch, the less I understand.

    3. it look s like to me, just another way man is tricking these girls into thinking: A - they want this life, and B - they CHOSE it. Never mind they would not get into heaven otherwise. This show is going to be interesting to those that really want to understand this group, and compare it to others. I'm glad we're going to discuss it, and Cynical is reviewing the shows!

    4. How about the girl that told Hyrum she wasn't allowed to say "No," when Hyrum asked if she liked his suit?? He quickly corrected her, and he seemed pretty genuine about the correction, but her remark also seemed genuine. I wonder which one is correct...

      Delete
    7. I didn't think she said "No" about the suit I thought she said she wasn't aloud to say no to a dance, and he corrected her saying you can say no to a dance but the boys are not aloud. Which makes sense if the girls are suppose to get this inspiration.

  25. 1) I wonder what Marlene does for a living. She got to go home for lunch. Becca didn't seem particularly thrilled to see her.

    2) Marlene says Becca and her have had her ups and downs. Guess they are currently going through a "down period." Guess they were either faking it for Lisa Ling when they were last featured or they were going through an "up period."

    3) Becca has been in the family for four years already and has only had one child? I'm surprised to hear that.

    4) I know Marlene said that they wanted all the children raised as one family and it not be " my child or your child" but I swear they both seemed to favor their own youngest. Marlene was always with her child and Becca with hers.

    5) Wonder if any girls have gone to the counsil saying God told them to marry Hyrum and they have been denied. Or are a bunch of girls waiting till they are 18 to all of a sudden claim Hyrum.

    6) Wonder if by the end of the season, Rose Mary will "get a name." Wonder if it will be Isiaih or Arthur.

    1. Totally thought that the wives were favoring their own kids and that the dad was favoring the son. It was pretty obvious that wife #1 did not like sharing her husband with wife #2. I was also surprised that Becca only had one child, was that by choice or chance?

I wonder how many girls are denied their first choice of marriage? Arthur said that little snippet about the girl will have their say, and "if all is approved by the church" they can be married ASAP.
Based off the amount of good looking young single men on the show, either a lot of girls in the church really don't want to be wife #1 for various reasons, or there is something shifty going on with the church "approving" these matches.

I couldn't imagine why any young girl would want to be married to an older man with multiple other wives and kids when they could be the first wife of a handsome younger man. Like why would Becca choose Issiah over one of the young missionaries?

      Delete
    2. I couldn't imagine why any young girl would want to be married to an older man with multiple other wives and kids when they could be the first wife of a handsome younger man.

When oldman Hammon said the girls could choose their partners but it had to be approved by the church I thought, yep, there you go. I imagine if a pretty 18 year old girl felt a calling (or whatever they call it) for young cute Hyrum, since old man Hammon is most likely on the approval panel, her request is denied and old man Hammon puts in his bid for her and it's approved. How else would old man Hammon have children who are toddlers when wives one and two look older than he does?

      Delete
    3. Wow, Cynical Jinx - that certainly explains why a handsome, seemingly nice guy like Hyrum isn't married. I just never thought of that. It's SO twisted. A pretty girl wants to marry Hyrum, is denied, but is approved to marry someone twice her age with several wives already. So this whole "inspiration" thing is just a load of BS. The woman's inspiration is subject to a group of men who might just want her for themselves.

I don't know why I'm shocked, yet I am. The men state that the woman has all the power when it comes to marrying, yet in reality they have none whatsoever. Just...wow. I thought I was shock-proof at this point.

      Delete
    4. Thank you CJ!! I have been wondering about Hammon's toddlers myself. Didn't he say he has three wives, but we've only seen two on the show? She must be a lot younger... Sometimes I think if this was my lifestyle, I would marry an older man, just because he would be more likely to kick the bucket sooner. Then I could just stay a widow and not have to marry again :)

    6. ..."Why would Becca chose Isaiah over one of the young missionaries?"

Didn't Isaiah say he had only been in the community for a short while? And didn't Becca say she has 46 brothers and sisters? And the town only has 1500 people, right? My wheels are spinning. I'm no numbers genius, but I'm thinking Becca is related to darn near every boy in that town!

I know cousin marriage isn't seen as the problem among plygs that it is for the rest of us, but like Kody getting a "Plyg Princess" do you guys think maybe the old men approve marriages for younger guys like Isaiah and not their own sons because the Elders are more aware of how closely related everyone in the town is?

Then again, that just makes it sound like it's "less gross" to them to marry a niece than to marry a cousin, so that can't be it.

I think the elders want to give old guys their quiver-full of wives before the boys get started on them (hence the world of the Lost Boys) but I do wonder why people like Kody and Isaiah get invited into the world and handed a couple or three wives when handsome Hyrum (and yeah, he is a cutie!) has to wait around.

I haven't been able to see the full episodes, but I have been watching the clips. Isaiah's first wife MUST be related to Meri. They look so much alike. Also, in one of the pictures of a church gathering one of the women in the shot could have been Christine's sister.

In any other circumstance I would just say "fun coincidence" but the plyg communities do share quite a few surnames

      Delete
    7. Whenever I see Hyrum I think of the Twilight Zone episode "Eye of the Beholder". Maybe in their strange little plyg world Arthur is hot and sweet Rose Marie is a bombshell while Hyrum is considered damn near disfigured. Maybe if they ever watch a red carpet event the girls swoon over Steve Buscimi and gag when they see Brad Pitt.

Okay so maybe that's what I hope is going on but my real guess is the Elders are jealous of Hyrum and any girl that requests him is turned down and then told what a catch some guy like Arthur is. Poor Hyrum probably doesn't even get to know that a girl asked about him. I have sickening feeling that by the end of this we may see a Hyrum/Rose Marie wedding:(

  26. If Centennial Park is only about an hour away from Las Vegas (and I don't know for sure if it is but that is about how early Becca was going to leave to pick up Isaiah from the airport)then why did the Browns make such a big deal about not having a church in Las Vegas? If it is so important to them, why don't they drive to Centennial Park to attend church with their people? I know they aren't exactly the same but it seems like they have most of the same beliefs.
Baylor, I would like to know the answers to all those questions too! I bet some girls have asked about Hyrum and have been denied. If Rose Marie marries Arthur I will throw up :)

    1. Centennial Park is a lot farther than a 1 hour drive away from Las Vegas. It's situated in an area of Northern Arizona where there is no direct access by a major interstate highway. Also, the Browns are a different sect of Mormon fundamentalism (AUB vs The Work). Something tells me they would not be accepted into the rather conservative, hardline group of Centennial Park.

    2. Thanks C.J.! I didn't know about "The Work" I will have to look them up. That makes much more sense if it is a lot more than an hour away also. Since people have been commenting on how much Marlene looks like Meri, I wonder how many polygamists have relatives in other sects?

    1. I sure do think the first 3 wives, especially Christine and Janelle were persuaded to let Robyn into the family to get the show. Kody was probably down anyway, and I can see him pushing for wife number 5 right about now to keep the show going and for his personal enjoyment.

I would take a bet that the wives deeply regret okaying Robyn joining the family right about now. I just wonder which one will be leaving the family first?

      Delete
    2. I know that not all written is true but they did say in their book that they had to postpone Robyn's wedding because TLC wanted to make it the finale. That they were together and engaged before the show actually started. I remember her writing that she didn't like the idea of such a long engagement, due to the show.

      Delete
    3. I think Meri wants a 5th more than Kody-she's irritated with Robyn for holding out on having another kid and is holding the treat of another wife to stay in Kody's good graces/get back at the other wives (the other three had an overwhelmingly negative response when the prospect of a fifth wife was mentioned).

I know many members in the group, including me, have remarked at how polished and media savvy The Dargers seem, and that their family appears to be more unified. I do agree that the Dargers are serious about their faith unlike most of the Browns and that's what holds them together. It seems they actually have jobs and are working together to raise their children.

      But

From what I've seen, all of Joe's wives can still have children. If one of the tenets of the religion is to keep bringing more children into polygamy, what happens to the family dynamic once Vicky, Valerie and Alina can no longer have children? Will Joe pick a fourth wife? We've seen that the Brown's didn't handle that well.

  29. I've been watching all the shows over again (I only half paid attention the first time around whenever I watched them) and you know what really frosts my damn cupcakes?

In the beginning I thought "oh hey, this seems like a great family"... but as I got towards the end, I'm really put off by Kody's ego. The episode I'm watching now is about Janelle putting together the plan for the fitness centre and it's obvious he doesn't want to do it, so he's being such an a$$hole to her about it. And when he's called on it he exclaims "OH THIS WAS MY IDEA IN THE FIRST PLACE!"

I think this speaks to the overall worship in that family of the male as the head of household. It's obvious that Janelle is the one with the brains -- she takes care of the money, she's been a breadwinner, and she hardly ever speaks up, but when she does, it's like Kody can't stand it. She's obviously a very smart lady, and I think she's by far my favorite part of that family, and it's such a shame that she's essentially been relegated to the cash cow. She goes and works, while Kody does who know's what, and yet she still has to worship him as the 'leader.' What about marriage as a partnership with both partners (or in this case all five partners) being equals? This is what really REALLY bugs me about this.

I hope their kids see through this and realize what their father's become. I have nothing but great things to say about those kids. They are wonderful children as far as I can see. Especially Logan. Janelle should be very proud of the man he's grown up to be.

I really wish Janelle would go out on her own. She'd be much better off with her kids. She's a smart lady and I think she's just made for running a business and could be very successful at it. It's Kody that's holding her back. Probably because he doesn't want to be shown up by the little lady.

I have no problem whatsoever with their lifestyle -- if it's something that makes them happy and it's something based on love and respect and it's not hurting anyone, great... it's Kody's huge ego that really irks me.

    ReplyDelete

    1. None of these women are going to "go off on their own" at this point. I've said this before, but IMO Janelle is only "very smart" in comparision to the rest of the adults (not including Logan and kids over 18) in this show. The Browns have had businesses before including some pantry business and a gun business, and they failed.

Janelle - and all the women - have a choice, they can stay or leave. They choose to stay. She CHOOSES to "worship him as the leader" - she doesn't HAVE to.

Also, if what we saw on that show - Janelle googling on the computer for a few minutes as part of her "research" on opening a fitness center to get lease rates - what about fitness equipment, salaries, insurance, etc? - is an example of her business acumen - then she's not exactly a born businesswoman. She basically had a modestly salaried admin/clerical/analyst type position with the State of Utah - NOT a managerial position, yet some folks think she's this business/financial wizard. She's been managing finances and yet all the adults have filed bankruptcy?? I call BS on the "Smart Janelle" persona. Oh and I'm guessing her blog on TLC - as well as Robyn's - is ghosted or at least, edited to the max. IMO.

Oh and Kody saying the fitness center was his idea - he was just pissing in the wind/whistling in the dark, more than likely it was just an idea for a storyline/plot that was never intended to actually come to fruition.

My take on Kody and the entire Brown adult cadre is this: Kody likes beginnings, but he doesn't care much for middles, and doesn't bother to stick around for endings. I can see them just "walking away" from the McMansions once they stumble and can't pay for them, oh after living there as long as they can rent-free before being foreclosed on.

In this case the one eyed dude may be able to see, but needs glasses desperately. I'm not sure why she drank the plyg Kool Aid, but girl turned the jug up and chugged. I think she may have been drawn to it when she was feeling vulnerable after her divorce from Meri's brother, and maybe she just kind of got enveloped in it. Eh, jmo.*shrugs shoulders*

Those homes are as good as gone. I'm pretty sure that they were approved with that abysmal loan that was featured in a previous episode. I predict we'll see news stories about the sister wives squatting in those foreclosed homes while begging their fans for money to keep them by this time next year.

As far as the wives leaving, the original are there for life in my opinion. Meri gets off on the power she has over the others, Christine "truely" believes she will not get into heaven without him and Janelle has no sense of self worth; but Robyn will run and publish a tell all as soon as the money dries up.

I tried reading Robyn's parts of their book, and it was like watching paint dry trying to get through her Shera roaring, gold digging, inane drivel. I have never taken so long to read a book that short. I'm devouring the book about Ann Currey's firing at the Today show. Just got it yesterday, and I'm almost 200 pages in. It's good, y'all.

First, I know we've seen these families before on Lisa ling but isnt the youngest Cawley wife related to that Rob boy who married Amanda Darger on their special last year? I've looked at his Facebook and he's EXTREMELY involved within that community. I'm sure Amanda will be seeing many sister wives in her future.

It really bothered me how Rose Marie couldn't shit up about "getting a name" or "inspiration" it's so sad how pressured they are to get married. She's just 18! what really disturbed me was her saying the man could be anywhere from 70 to her age.... WTF???? and it was almost humorous hearing her mothers' stories of when they "knew" Michael was the one. That balding guy is creeeepy!!!! They all look so bored. What boring, awkward and menial lives they have to live.

I immediately saw the resemblance on marleen and Meri. Total twins.

It made me really mad to see becca go pick up Isaiah. I know that they take turns but it was still so sad to see marleen have to stay home with the damn kids while she watches her sister wife leave in 4 INCH STILETTO HEELS to go stay the night in vegas. (Did anyone else see those sky high heels?) that whole situation really bothered me because if my husband was gone for 6 weeks and he didn't want to rush back home that evening or even that next morning to come and see me I'd be so sad! They stayed the night and walked around the vegas strip then lolligagged the whole next day and didn't make it back until that evening. Where is the sacrifice on the man's part? I just don't see it. It's abuse. That was abuse!

I could go on and on about this creepy group. Nothing about them was right to me. So sad and depressing to watch. Why does that old ass man have toddler children? The women look so old and overworked and just stressed out. They have such shitty lives so they age so fast. It just depresses me to watch.

That was horrible! I felt so bad for Marleen. I don't know why these women feel like they deserve to be treated this way.

Even in front of Marlene. Gotta wonder if that's her way of getting/keeping his attention. However, it's a constant reminder to Marlene that Becca has a sexual relationship with Isaiah. Maybe she does that on purpose for that reason.

Becca acts like a high schooler/college student with her boyfriend instead of a mature wife with kids. Then again, maybe that's what Isaiah likes about her.
