Ex-FLDS Security: Public Cameras Used to Spy on Polygamous Towns

Now this is Stalking......

By Ladd Egan
(KUTV) Attorneys for cities on the Utah/Arizona border disagree with assertions from former security workers that city-owned cameras are used by Warren Jeffs’ polygamous sect to keep tabs on members and outsiders.

The twin cities of Colorado City, Ariz., and Hildale, Utah are headquarters for the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

“We knew the city was helping us with those cameras,” said Guy Timpson, who says he was part of an elite security team under the direction of FLDS leaders.

Cameras mounted on public buildings, private businesses and homes are all connected on a fiber optics network and available to the FLDS church, according to Timpson.

“We literally could look right into their windows,” Timpson said of certain homes they were instructed to watch using the cameras. “Those lenses are powerful, they zoom far; you can pull license plates half a mile away.” Please read the rest of this story courtesy of KUTV.com  http://www.kutv.com/news/top-stories/stories/vid_4342.shtml

Is this not creepy or what? I can't even imagine it. What are they so afraid of the flock doing? My gosh, do they have any rights at this point?

How would you feel if your town was controlled like this?

UPDATED: Video added...After 12 Years of Waiting, Great News About Ruby Jessop

We Welcome Troy Bowles Back to SWB!

Incredible news! First of all, 12 years ago, I got involved with Flora Jessop. She was trying to get her sister, Ruby out of Hildale, Utah. Ruby had been placed into a forced marriage at age 14. She had tried to run away but Utah law enforcement and DCFS sent her right back to her abusers where she had to go through with and endure this forced marriage.

My colleagues and I worked very hard to get the right people interested in this case. I spoke to the Utah Senate Judiciary Confirmation Committee because not long after Ruby was forced to go back to Hildale to live under her uncle, Fred Jessop, the Washington County attorney, Eric Ludlow was appointed to serve as a judge on the 5th district court. I presented evidence at his confirmation hearing that we had contacted Ludlow via certified letter explaining our concerns. Ludlow ignored our letter, but he did indeed receive it. That was undeniable. It held up his confirmation for six weeks, but Ludlow had powerful people on his side. He's now a judge.

We didn't stop with that. Orrin Hatch has a lot of FLDS friends, or at least he did at the time. He has even played the organ in their Colorado City chapel. That's hardly an honor they'd allow a typical "gentile." We challenged Hatch to go into Hildale and meet with his friend, Fred Jessop, and find out why Ruby was living under virtual house arrest and being forced into an arranged marriage. Hatch completely ignored us. Ruby is now 26 years old and she has six children.

I'm filled with emotion over all of this. It has driven me to a considerable amount of effort to make sure no politician can ever lie to me again. This is what made me decide to become a human rights philosopher. But today, after 12 years of involvement, I got the first good news I've had in years. Ruby and her six children have finally managed to escape Colorado City and the FLDS. This has been a dream-come-true for my friend Flora Jessop who is now reunited with her sister. For Ruby, in the end, human rights prevailed. Now, there are others who are trying to escape, but as we can see, the Utah State Government will do just about anything to avoid getting involved. It wasn't until the Mojave County, Arizona law enforcement got extra funding from the state that they could help us. Many thanks to the state of Arizona for finally stepping in to help this young woman.

Some important people involved in the failure to rescue Ruby Jessop 12 years ago:

Orrin Hatch: Senator, United States (Utah)
Mark Shurtleff: Former Utah State Attorney General
Eric Ludlow: Judge, Utah Fifth District; Former County Attorney, Washington County, Utah
Bill Hickman, Senator, Utah (Washington Co.)

Between Shurtleff and Ludlow's offices, it seems nobody could decide who should have been responsible for our complaint about Ruby's forced marriage. The matter fell out of the attention of the public and Ruby disappeared, even losing contact with her sister, Flora. Hatch apparently felt the sting from my colleagues when he praised the FLDS for their hard working ethic and their strong faith. We challenged him and he went away for good. He had no interest in Ruby's forced marriage. He refused to believe that forced marriages were even taking place among the FLDS and wouldn't even listen to our arguments. Governor Mike Leavitt had appointed Ludlow to serve on the Fifth District Bench. We never heard from his office throughout this whole affair.

CPS sending foster children to Warren Jeffs' polygamist sect

COLORADO CITY, Ariz. (AP) - Arizona is placing foster children in the polygamist enclave of Colorado City near the Utah border and that's raising concerns about their future and Arizona Child Protective Services' judgment in finding homes for abused and neglected kids.

Mohave County Supervisor Buster Johnson has identified one foster parent as a former member of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints whose family was "reassigned" some years ago by church leader Warren Jeffs.

Johnson notified Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer this week and asked Attorney General Tom Horne for help to bring the child back to Lake Havasu City, where the child's mother still lives. Please read the rest at  the Daily Courier

Cat Buried Alive in Cement - Alleged Cult Warning from Polygamists?

We touched on this last night in discussions - however, I have to put it up. Anyone, ANYONE that would do the unthinkable to a harmless cat is EVIL in my book. There are many article on the net about this cruelty.
WARNING - Not for the faint of heart, GRAPHIC.

A kitten was found buried in cement in polygamist stronghold of Colorado City recently. Despite efforts to save the cat, it died.

The cat's placement may have been a message from FLDS who do not appreciate outside influence.

There is no way this was an accident; no way the kitten could have ended up encased in cement inside in a pipe on its own.

So who could do such a thing? Andrew Chatwin says it's been going on for years. He claims dead animals have been scattered all over the property of Isaac Wyler, who works on behalf of a Utah Judge in the polygamist towns.A cat was found encased in cement in Ck," Wyler said. "Two Days later, I found this pigeon with its head snapped off."   After being freed from the cement, the kitten was taken to Best Friend's Animal Sanctuary outside of Kanab. Best Friends rescue workers say Thomas' injuries were very severe and that the cat was in constant pain.

DOJ files bias suit against towns home to polygamist sect

(Reuters) - The U.S. Justice Department on Thursday sued two towns on the Utah-Arizona border that are dominated by a polygamist Mormon sect, citing religious discrimination and civil rights violations against residents who do not share the majority faith.
The lawsuit against the twin cities of Colorado City, Arizona, and Hildale, Utah, said the towns and their joint police department and utility providers had allowed the sect to unduly influence the provision of public services, including policing.
Most of the residents of the towns are members of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, a breakaway Mormon sect whose leader, Warren Jeffs, is serving a sentence of life plus 20 years in prison in Texas for raping two underage girls he wed in "spiritual marriages."

A Follow up with Fawn and Fawn from the underground Railroad.

Although we couldn't show part 1, if you didn't  to you tube and watch it, I urge you to. It, to me, was one of the best, showing Flora Jessop rescuing two girls., Fawn and Fawn.
Here's the Link: the Polygamy Underground Railway Part 1:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ssYXu3qcS8&feature=related

Dr. Phil did a follow up with the two girls, and here is the story. I'm so pleased he got involved and may provide more help for these girls. Keep in mind, one is a mother of 2. Thanks to Flora Jessop (our Hero) they got out.

He follows up with Fawn B. and Fawn H., who escaped from the sect in Colorado City. They live with Fawn H.'s brother, Carl, who escaped years ago, and his wife, Joni. Both girls' formal education stopped in elementary school where they were taught that man never landed on the moon and dinosaurs never existed.
"The two Fawns seem to be doing great," says Carl. "They're more assertive, more self-assured. They seem to have fun and joke around and they're a little giddier than they were before ... They've really learned that they're not there to serve someone else."

Joni agrees. "Just the way they carry themselves. Even the way they walk. They're not ashamed anymore," she says. "I am extremely proud of Fawn and Fawn. They both are striving really hard in school. They are actually going to finish four years of high school in two years." I'm happier," says Fawn B. "I'm making big steps in life. I feel like I can live my life the way I think is right."

They recently took a trip to Boston, where they met with a counselor and cult specialist. Fawn B. says she has learned a lot. "We watched these videos of different cults. And they have so much in common, like the women being lower than the men. There's always one person that's higher than all of them," she says. They also visited a science museum for the first time, but Fawn B. is still not sure dinosaurs ever existed.
"I feel like I'm just starting my life over," says Fawn H., who loved their trip to Boston. "That was really cool. I've never been anywhere else, besides Arizona and Utah. And to go out and see other cultures ..." Fawn wants to go to college and become a psychologist. "Now I have goals. I have things to live for," she says.
Carl and Joni are proud of the girls, but say it's still a slow process. "There's been a couple times that Fawn's brother has called and really raked her over the coals. It's really upset me," says Carl.
"He totally believes that her salvation lies in coming back and when he calls, he verbally beats her up," Joni explains.

But they are seeing progress. "Before, she'd just sit and take it and she'd feel bad for hours," says Carl. "But now she's standing up and saying, 'Well, that's not true and I don't have to listen to that.'

Fawn told her brother not to call her anymore. "I was so proud of myself," she says. "It made me feel I could conquer anything. I can stand up for what I believe in."
"You've really entered a new world," says Dr. Phil. "Has this been a fun blossoming for you, or has this been more scary and intimidating?"
"It's not as scary anymore. You learn about new things and it's a really nice experience," says Fawn B. "It was kind of scary at first," says Fawn H. "But after that, it got really fun. I wanted to learn more, I wanted to know what's going on."

Dr. Phil asks about their "lightbulb moment" when they were on the show last time. Both girls reported that it was when Dr. Phil told them that he didn't want to tell them what to do or else he'd be just like Warren Jeffs. "Why was that so important to you?"
"It was important to me because I don't want somebody to take over my life again," says Fawn B. "And I was waiting for you to say that because that's how I knew I could trust you."

Fawn H. agrees. "I didn't want anybody to tell me what to do anymore. And for you to say that, I was like, 'Holy cow, I don't have to do what they say.'"

Dr. Phil thanks Steve Hassan at the Freedom of Mind Center in Boston for working with the teens.

FLDS power struggle, town gvt indictments and a random dose of cute

The news never stops in the world of polygamy.

Colorado City town manager David Darger has been indicted on 13 felonies related to the misuse of public money in the polygamous town's fire district — two days after the charges against fire chief Jake Barlow came out. (story here)

They're the only two named in the April 2010 search warrant, so that's probably it. We know something about the details of the accusations based on the search warrant (Lava Hot Springs, Costco — download the PDF here) but it'll be interesting to see exactly what the charges are based on.

We'll probably find out within the month after their first court appearance, scheduled for Aug. 23.

Also today, I wrote up a story on William E. Jessop, the rival FLDS prophet, signing and distributing a letter condemning Warren Jeffs. (read the letter here, via Fox 13 reporter Ben Winslow).
Erstwhile FLDS spokesman Willie R. Jessop (same name, different guy) signed the letter too, marking the first time he's denounced Jeffs to the FLDS directly — though he was out in the media doing so immediately after the trial.

On a completely different note, this week I got to write about puppies! Well, technically service dogs to the disabled in-training. The story doesn't run for a few days, but check out the blog dedicated to the main pooch I wrote about, Balsa.

Because sometimes you need a dose of cute.
