Book Review: The Witness Wore Red: The 19th Wife Who Brought Polygamous Cult Leaders to Justice

***Quick Note - Review: Tell all is open below to discuss all things "Sister Wives" and the post is open to discuss the new shows, thank you.
                                              **This summary contains spoilers**

Rebecca Musser was born into the FLDS, first led by Rulon Jeffs and then ultimately run by Warren Jeffs. Rebecca was born to a second wife. Rebecca was taught at a very early age that life was full of sacrifices. This line from the book sums it all up “We had to endure life, we had to suffer pain and sacrifice; eternity was all that mattered”. In fact, they were taught that if you knew ‘the truth’ of the religion (FLDS) and then left, you were an apostate, destined to burn in eternal darkness. Starting at the very youngest age, she was taught that outsiders (“Gentiles”) were evil and never to be trusted. Gentile doctors were not to be trusted, nor were the police or government. They were taught that Gentiles wanted to take children from their parents and throw their fathers in jail. They were frequently reminded of the Short Creek raid where families were separated, sometimes never to see each other again.

Rebecca’s childhood was heartbreaking. Her father’s first wife, Irene, was cruel and mean to both Rebecca’s mom and Rebecca’s mom’s children. Frequent beatings took place, sometimes to the point of blood and broken bones. Rebecca’s father deferred to Irene and looked the other way when Rebecca’s siblings or her mom were abused. Rebecca attended the Alta Academy, founded by Rulon Jeffs. The principal of the school was Warren Jeffs. Rebecca found that she had skills at playing the violin and playing that music was a refuge to her from her disturbing home life. At the Alta Academy, the children were frequently lectured by Warren Jeffs to obey and keep sweet, never be displeasing. Warren taught them that polygamists were persecuted just as the Jews were by the Nazis. Rebecca assisted with the school and helped put musicals together.

Shortly after she turned 18, Rebecca was told she would be marrying the prophet, Rulon Jeffs. She would be the 19th wife of the 85 year old prophet. Rebecca was devastated. After her wedding, she learned that being Rulon’s wife meant she had to be ‘on duty’ for 24 hour shifts, helping him to use the bathroom and undress. Unfortunately, despite his relative frailty, Rulon still expected his wives to ‘satisfy’ him and perform sexual acts with him. Due to his age and inability to sexually function adequately (although they had to try) most of the newer wives did not get pregnant with Rulon’s children. Less than a week after their marriage, Rulon announced that he was marrying two more young wives. Despite not loving her husband or being attracted to him, Rebecca was nonetheless devastated that her new husband didn’t find her to be ‘enough’ and this led to jealousy and feelings of inadequacy. There were 46 wives after Rebecca for Rulon Jeffs. Being married to a prophet was considered to be an honor for a girl and her family so to complain would be displeasing and blasphemous.

Rebecca was now fully immersed in being part of the Jeffs’s family. Warren was Rulon’s right hand man and was involved in the daily life of Rulon and all of his wives. When Rulon asked Rebecca to be ‘on duty’ a little sooner than she felt was reasonable, she said “no”. Warren then called her into his office where he told her that she could never again tell her husband ‘no’. If she were to say no again, she would be destroyed in the flesh. Rebecca did the best she could to stay busy with activities that would be acceptable to Rulon, thus not having to be on duty as often. Rebecca threw herself into the teaching and music that she enjoyed.

A few years after they married, Rulon had a stroke. Rulon had claimed to his followers that he was going to live forever, he was their last prophet and would be there personally when Christ came back to Earth. He simply could not die, that would be a devastating blow to all the people of their faith. Therefore, the people were kept in the dark about the true extent of Rulon’s health. The wives were even more restricted to their activities as they had to be on site, fasting and praying. When Rulon had a rough night, Warren would tell the wives that they had not been faithful enough or praying enough. Warren started determining who could see Rulon and stopped allowing Rulon’s close contacts to see him anymore. Rulon hung in for quite a long time in his feeble condition but Warren started running most of the day to day operations of the FLDS. When the world didn’t end on December 31, 1999 as they were told would happen, Warren said it was because the followers were too wicked to be brought up and God was giving them more time. This become a constant event, doomsday dates were picked and then when they didn’t happen, Warren would say they were too wicked and it was their fault.

As Rulon continued deteriorating, Warren went on a marriage spree, performing hundreds of marriages and the girls were getting younger and younger. Warren told girls who were 12 that since Mary, mother of Jesus, got pregnant at the age of 12, then it should be considered an honor to get married young and start birthing children. Rebellious girls (those who questioned some of the principles or who didn’t keep sweet), were married off so they could be ‘broken’ and start having children. Young girls with children were more likely to stay within the FLDS because they had nowhere else to go.

Rebecca’s sister, Elissa Wall, was told she had to marry her first cousin. She was only 13. She begged and pleaded to be given a few more years to marry. Rebecca was successful at getting Elissa a little more time but eventually Rulon agreed to let Elissa’s father place her in marriage. This led to years of physical and sexual abuse of Elissa. When she complained, she was told to go home and submit to her priesthood head (her husband). (note: Elissa Wall has written a book about her experiences “Stolen Innocence”)

Eventually Rulon died and his followers were in shock. They were told he would be the last prophet. Thousands of followers came to his funeral. They believed, like Jesus, that Rulon would arise from the dead. When he didn’t, it the wives were at fault for being too wicked. When Rulon died, Warren stepped in and said that Rulon has given him the title of Prophet. Warren then set strict rules in place, no music, no toys, no laughter and and no one could wear the color red, it signified evil. After initially promising that he would not force Rulon’s wives to marry him, Rulon’s younger wives started having ‘revelations’ that God wanted them to marry Warren. Rebecca started worrying that she would become another one of Warren’s many wives. Rebecca started a friendship with a young man named Ben. She eventually was caught kissing him and Warren gave her an ultimatum, she had to choose a suitable husband (i.e. Warren) or she would be damned for all eternity. Rebecca decided enough was enough and with Ben’s help, she left the community.

Life outside the FLDS was difficult. Having been told about how evil the Gentiles were , Rebecca was happy to find that others were willing to help her. She and Ben moved to Oregon where Rebecca’s brother, Cole, lived. They worked in various wait staff jobs and did their best to get their lives together. Rebecca eventually become pregnant and Cole kicked them out of his house for being dishonest about their relationship. Eventually, Ben and Rebecca married and had another child, Natalie, who had some congenital abnormalities. Much of Rebecca’s story, however, depicts how her life was impacted by the FLDS even after she left and her endless determination to see that Warren Jeffs paid for the pain and suffering he caused.

Although Rebecca left the FLDS, she was very aware of what was happening within the community. There were stories of her sisters being married off and boys being dropped off at the side of the road. Rebecca said she they aren’t really ‘lost’ boys, they are ‘abandoned’ boys. Soon Warren’s bad behavior caught up with him and he was being accused of many offenses by various states including Utah, Arizona and Texas. Warren then went on the run. His followers became even more devout as they now considered him a martyr. Rebecca contacted law enforcement in order to check on some of her family members that had gone missing. After a lot of investigation and communications with her contacts in the police department, some of her relatives were found in Texas at the “Yearning for Zion” ranch. The YFZ ranch was in Eldorado, Texas and ultimately became the beginning of the end for Warren. There was a phone call from “Sarah Jessop” to the State of Texas claiming she was being abused and pregnant. This was enough for the State to go into the YFZ and search for the victim. The State eventually had to enter the temple to search for Sarah. Although Sarah was never found, there was disturbing evidence about the abuses of the FLDS and specifically Warren Jeffs.

Warren was eventually located and arrested. He was captured in, of all things, a Red Escalade. Law enforcement needed someone who knew the FLDS, knew the terminology and the people and someone who could decipher all the records that were found in the YFZ temple. For the trial, the State needed to get the truth about the FLDS and most specifically about Warren Jeffs, who had harmed so many families.

Rebecca stepped up to the challenge. She sacrificed time with her family and her jobs in order to see that Warren paid for his gross transgressions. There were several months of trials in several states. Rebecca was called to testify in many of the cases. The most significant case was the YFZ case in Texas and Rebecca was key in helping the legal system and jurors understand exactly what was happening within the FLDS. When Rebecca testified against Warren, she wore red. The color that was forbidden by the false prophet was now her signature color and personal statement. Warren was found guilty and is in jail for the remainder of his life. Rebecca remains an advocate for people seeking to leave the FLDS and remains a voice for the previously voiceless.

This book was excellent and I highly recommend that it be a part of everyone’s library, especially anyone interested in polygamy or human trafficking. Rebecca’s story is important and should be read and discussed. *Written by CPA Carol*

Who is Winston Blackmore and how is he involved with Warren Jeffs and the FLDS?

A couple of days ago, someone was asking about a Genealogy of Warren Jeffs. Now, I didn't find a great one, but the video I put up yesterday, The Wives of Warren & Rulon Jeffs Polygamy PROPHETS, did have lists of the wives of Rulon and Warren Jeffs, and a Winston Blackmore. So I asked "Who is Winston Blackmore." I am brand new at all these Mormon sects, I am practically learning as I type them out. Without the help of Pretty in Pink (my mentor) and now Terrasola on the subject of polygamy sects, there would not be such interesting information on this site.
So, Terrasola had to fill me in:

Who is Winston Blackmore and how is he involved with Warren Jeffs and the FLDS?

Winston Blackmore is the leader of Canada’s largest polygamist group, located in the community of Bountiful, British Columbia (BC). For over 20 years, Blackmore was the Bishop of the Bountiful branch of the FLDS.  There are claims that he has 25+ wives and 120+ children, but no one outside Bountiful knows for sure.  Blackmore has accumulated considerable personal wealth to support his large family. He has business interests in British Columbia, Alberta and Idaho which include grain, cattle farming, forestry and transportation. His estimated worth exceeds $15 million.
Winston believed that Warren Jeffs illegally/immorally became Prophet and FLDS Church president after Rulon Jeffs, had a stroke in 1998.  Winston began to express his opinion on this subject and was excommunicated by Warren Jeffs in September 2002.  The community of Bountiful was split nearly in half; about 700 people continued to follow Blackmore, while about 500 followed the new Bishop appointed by Warren Jeffs (Winston’s brother-in-law). Winston is very well-spoken and has agreed to TV and print interviews, so he is well-known in Canada as the Canadian face of polygamy.
Section 293 of Canada’s Criminal Code makes polygamy illegal.  However, Canada enacted a Charter of Rights and Freedoms in the 1980s, which guarantees Canadians the rights to: “freedom of conscience and religion; freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression, including freedom of the press and other media of communication; freedom of peaceful assembly; and freedom of association.”  In addition, “every individual is equal before and under the law and has the right to the equal protection and equal benefit of the law without discrimination and, in particular, without discrimination based on race, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, sex, age or mental or physical disability.”
Many legal experts, and Mr. Blackmore, believe that this section of the Criminal Code could not withstand a “Charter Challenge.”  So in BC and Canada there was little/no prosecution of polygamy-related offences in the last 25 years.   However, finally a BC Attorney General asked the BC Court of Appeal for a definitive ruling on whether this section of the Criminal Code is enforceable.  Canadians wait for the outcome.
It may interest you to know that the 12 year old girl that Warren Jeffs was convicted of assaulting came from Bountiful and is related to Winston Blackmore.

WEIRDO WARREN - A PROPHET PERVERT of the FLDS

"SISTER WIVES is and always will be our main focus. But even Robyn is bringing up Warren Jeffs. With Polygamy being a hot topic on our blog, I will attempt to give you a quick overview of Weirdo Warren, currently on trial in TX for bigamy and sexual assault. I am just now tuning into this case, so bear with me.

WARREN STEED JEFFS - Is or was the current president of a controversial Mormon sect known as the Fun -damentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (or FLDS). (There’s a current argument over who is the president, we’ll get to that soon) As president and "Prophet, Seer and Revelator" of the organization, Jeffs wields considerable religious as well as secular power, in line with the FLDS Church's theocratic principles. In this organization, he was an absolute ruler; in this position, he was an absolute pervert.

He was arrested in August 2006 in NV, and agreed to be taken to UT for trial. In May and July 2007 the State of AZ charged him with eight additional counts—including sexual conduct with minors and incest in two separate cases. His trial, which began early in September 2007 in St. George, UT, lasted less than a month, and on September 25 the verdict was read declaring him guilty of two counts of rape as an accomplice. On November 20, 2007 he was sentenced to imprisonment for 10 years to life and began serving his sentence at the Utah State Prison. Jeffs' conviction was reversed by Utah's Supreme Court on July 27, 2010 because of incorrect jury instructions. He has since been extradited to TX, where he is currently on trial for bigamy and sexual assault in connection with a raid on a West Texas ranch in 2008.

He is convicted of rape as an accomplice for his role in marrying teenage girls to the kind of shady bachelor who drives a molester van—and not in an ironic way. He also faces charges of both incest and sexual conduct with minors, both in Arizona and Texas. Talk about running the gamut.

In May 2006, for fleeing prosecution in Utah, Warren Jeffs was named one the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted. He is far and away the biggest pussy ever to make that list. Jeffs proves the age-old adage that anyone can be famous, but to gain real notoriety you need to get caught getting it on with an eighth-grader. Just ask Roman Polanski or R. Kelly.

Warren Jeffs began to feel an inappropriate tingling sensation in the crotch of his magic Mormon underwear from the moment of his birth on December 3, 1955, a birthday he shares with Ozzy Osbourne, Daryl Hannah, and Anna Chlumsky, the girl who played the girl in My Girl.

His given name, Warren Steed Jeffs, almost sort of makes him sound like a porn actor, along the lines of Jake Steed, star of such adult classics as Bottom Dweller 33 1/3 and What Happens Between My Tits Stays Between My Tits, though it’s likely that Warren Jeffs’ bread basket is a great deal smaller.

Jeffs is the son of Rulon T. Jeffs, the original un- questioned omnipotent leader of the FLDS. Known to his followers by the creeptacularly pervball nickname “Uncle Rulon,” the elder Jeffs proved hornier than Tommy Lee on an ecstasy binge, fathering about 60 children with several dozen wives. Upon his death in 2002, In his new capacity, Warren Jeffs also held the title “President and Prophet, Seer and Revelator.” Warren Jeffs assumed his father’s place in the church, his father’s nickname, and, within one week, all but two of his father’s wives, one being his mother. This effectively made him “Uncle Brother Stepfather Warren.” After this, Jeffs continued to marry more women, many of whom were close relatives. Because of his claimed his descent from Jesus Christ and Joseph Smith, Jeffs has taught that his marriages are necessary to preserve his sacred bloodline of megalomaniacal incestuous child-molesting serial-sodomizing fugitives.   Any one of his prophecies, visions, and/or revelations would’ve gotten him 5-to-10 upstate.

Not only did Warren Jeffs use his position to satisfy his own taste for the barely (and not even barely) legal, he also served it up to his buddies, who, you have to assume, couldn’t get dates for themselves and hadn’t ever heard of Craigslist personals. Because Jeffs was the only person in the church who could perform marriages, he was responsible for assigning wives to husbands—as luck would have it, he, himself, occasionally turned out to be assignee. He also had the authority to punish men by reassigning their wives, children, and homes to other men—again, as luck would have it, he himself occasionally turned out to be reassignee.

By the time he was arrested, church members claim Jeffs had as many as 70 wives. This was in accordance with his “teaching” that the more wives a man has, the closer he is to divinity, and that a man needs at least three wives as a pre-requisite for admission to heaven. Of course, for most men, dealing with three wives at the same time would be a living hell, so it kind of evens out.

The FLDS exercises substantial if not complete control over the children born into the congregation. Male subjects are reported to have been frequently exiled from the church due to their alleged competition with the elder male members of the church for the limited number of suitable marriage candidates.

Allegations against Warren Jeffs began as early as July 2004, when his nephew Brent Jeffs filed a lawsuit claiming that his uncle—who, again, would also simultaneously become both his step-father and step-grandfather—took him to Brokeback Mountain, where he anally raped him when he was 5 or 6, and that Warren Jeffs' brothers, also named in the lawsuit, watched and participated in the abuse. Several other nephews began coming forward, who also implicated several of Jeffs’ brothers, who were also his stepsons. One of the alleged victims, Clayne Jeffs, committed suicide with a firearm after accusing Warren Jeffs of sexually assaulting him as a child. It took the Utah D.A.’s office the better part of a year to untangle this incestuous hairball of consanguinity.

In June 2005, Jeffs was charged with sexual assault on a minor and with conspiracy to commit sexual misconduct with a minor for allegedly arranging, in April 2001, a marriage between a 14-year-old girl and her 19-year-old first cousin, Allen. The girl, Elissa Wall (then only known as "Jane Doe IV") testified that she begged "Uncle Rulon" to let her wait until she was older, or choose another man for her. Rulon Jeffs was apparently "sympathetic", but Warren Jeffs was not, and she was forced to go through with the marriage. The 14-year-old alleged that her new husband raped her repeatedly and that she repeatedly miscarried. She eventually left Allen and the community and had two children with her now former husband Lamont Barlow. Jeffs faced the above charges in Mohave County, AZ. In July 2005, the Arizona Attorney General's office distributed wanted posters offering $10,000 for information leading to Jeffs' arrest and conviction. Yeah, they can arrest you for that. At least until UT, AZ, or TX passes the law legalizing conspiracy to commit sexual misconduct with a minor for “medicinal purposes only,” better known as Proposition 6914.

Jeffs spent the better parts of 2005 and 2006 facing, unlawfully fleeing, and then ultimately hiding from, various statutory rape charges.Interestingly enough, he actually resurfaced in June 2006, for one day, to perform more child bride ceremonies. To many, this was the extralegal underage wedding officiates equivalent of the Beatles’ famous impromptu rooftop concert.

On August 28, 2006, after nearly two years on the lam, Warren Jeffs was apprehended during a routine traffic stop of his Cadillac Escalade, a vehicle driven almost exclusively by perverts.

Already serving 10 years in UT, and awaiting trial in AZ, Warren Jeffs’ name also started to surface in the wake of Child Protective Services’ raid on the Yearning for Zion Ranch in Eldorado, TX. In late May 2008, as part of the court case involving the removal of 416 children from the YFZ Ranch, photos were introduced that depict Jeffs totally French kissing his then 12- and 14-year-old wives. These photos comprise the skeeviest exhibits in the history of American jurisprudence. (See Below)

Oh, yeah-  If all that wasn’t enough, Warren Jeffs also embezzled untold sums from the FLDS trust fund. Until courts in Utah intervened, Jeffs controlled almost all of the land in Colorado City, AZ, and Hildale, UT, which was part of a church trust, the United Effort Plan (UEP). The land has been estimated to be worth over $100 million. Currently, all UEP assets are in the custody of the Utah court system pending further litigation.

In what may be the creepiest court exhibits ever, TX officials released photos of Warren Jeffs in intimate clinches with two underage girls, his wives, 14 and 12 at the time of their marriage. Jeffs is pictured with a girl named Loretta in three photos, which were snapped in January 2005 and recorded the couple's "First Anniversary." The other pictures show Jeffs, now 55, in July 2006 photos with a girl named Merriane, who was 12 at the time. In the photos, Jeffs is passionately kissing both girls.

Enough Said to Get You Started? ** NOTE, Sister Wives belong to the AUB, which broke off from the FLDS 60 yrs ago, although the FLDS like to claim them, the AUB sure doesn't want a thing to do with them!
