Book Review/Summary "Church of Lies" by Flora Jessop

"Church of Lies" by Flora Jessop

Flora grew up in the FLDS church, which is still controlled by the infamous self-proclaimed prophet Warren
Jeffs. Today, she is a well-known anti-polygamous advocate. This heartbreaking, but ultimately triumphant, narrative begins in Flora's own words: "My name is Flora Jessop. I've been called apostate, vigilante, and crazy bitch, and maybe I am. But some people call me a hero, and I'd like to think they're right too. If I am a hero, maybe it's because every time I can play a part in saving a child or a woman from a life of servitude and degradation, I'm saving a little piece of me, too."

Flora, one of 28 children born to her father and his three wives, grew up in the bordering cities of Colorado City, Arizona and Hildale, Utah. Her childhood was anything but idyllic. Abuse ran rampant in her home. Her father, someone she should have been able to count on for protection and support turned out to be the worst perpetrator of all. At age 8, her father molested her. At age 12, he raped her.

When Flora was 14 years-old, she managed to escape her abusive situation. Her freedom, however, was short-lived. Although the woman who took her in as part of the underground railroad was kind to her, she felt lonely and scared. The outside world was foreign to her. One day, she called her uncle to come take her home. Fred Jessop was her father's half-brother and the bishop of the FLDS. Instead of bringing Flora home, she spent the next two years a captive in his home. Flora describes living in a room no larger than a closet, being beaten and tortured by her Aunt Lydia, and made to be a domestic servant in their household.

Eventually, she was given a choice: marry or be sent to a mental institution. Again, she chose freedom. Flora's husband-to-be was her first cousin, Phillip. He and Flora had enjoyed one another's company prior to their marriage. In fact, it was the "God Squad," a secretive group of men who patrolled the town, who had seen them talking together and reported it to her Uncle Fred. In twisted FLDS logic, this alone was a cause for marriage. Phillip and Flora were given a gun-shot wedding in Las Vegas by a Justice of the Peace.

Ironically, this arranged marriage turned out to be a source of freedom for Flora. Although she was only 16 years-old at the time of her wedding vows, she was legally married. That meant legal emancipation. Flora chose to leave three weeks later and, with the help of her husband, she moved to Las Vegas.

An out-of-the-blue call from a producer of the show 60 Minutes changed her life forever. Although Flora was initially startled, she eventually decided to give an interview. For her, it was "...the first of many media interviews I'd do and the beginning of my lifelong passion to tell the world the truth about polygamy and its abuses." Sadly, it wasn't all roses after that for Flora. She went through a drug bing to bury the guilt and shame of her past. She survived an attempted kidnapping by her Uncle Fred. Flora's life became something of a giant road trip, traveling from place to place, and from one bad relationship to the next. Flora also found stripping to be a lucrative career option. The one joy from this period of her life was the birth of her beautiful baby daughter, Shauna.

The next chapter of Flora's life developed into something drastically different. During this time, she fell in love with Tim, the man of her dreams, and they and their children became a family. Flora also learned that she need not hate and/or fear God. Last, this new era ushered in Flora's declaration of an all-out war against the FLDS.

In April of 2001, Flora's baby sister Ruby Jessop was forced into an unwanted arranged marriage to her step-brother, Haven Barlow. Ruby was only 14 years-old. Flora's unsuccessful attempt to protect Ruby meant that the family had to hider her away. Thus began more than a decade-long mission to rescue her sister. Flora's search for Ruby soon led to anti-polygamy activism. She became a member of the underground railroad, helping young girls to leave their abusive Mormon fundamentalist communities.

She began an organization called "Help the Child Brides." Later, she was recruited to be the executive director of the "Child Protection Project." One of Flora's most interesting underground railroad experiences was with two 16 year-old girls-- friends and both named Fawn-- who were leaving the FLDS. KTVK 3TV's reporter Mike Watkiss came along for the ride, filming the rescue as it was happening. Later, Watkiss created a documentary from the footage, "Colorado City and the Underground Railroad." (see video below)

Flora's book highlights some of the heart-wrenching stories of those she tried to help. Their courage to leave seemed to be a mere first step in a long process to claim true freedom. Life on the "outside" would be filled with legal battles, all while trying to recoup from their pasts and trying to acclimate to their new lives. For the young runaway girls, simple things such as a haircut and new clothes were powerful experiences. So, too, were learning to make choices for themselves.

Last, Flora recounts the arrest, trial, and conviction of Warren Jeffs as well as the raid on the YFZ ranch compound in Texas. For her, these have been victories. They have also served to help get her message out about the horrors and abuses going on within the FLDS and other Mormon polygamist communities. The tattered tapestry of Flora's past has helped to weave a safety net for others. She chooses to be grateful for the painful experiences of her past, for they have helped to shape her into who she is today: a survivor, an activist, and a heroine.

Though her work is far from over, Flora works tirelessly on in her quest to bring freedom to an oppressed people-- those who live not in a foreign, far-away land, but men, women, and children right in the heart of America. ~ ~ ~ As a side-note, earlier this year in January, Flora's dreams of rescuing her sister Ruby finally came true. Ruby, now 26 years-old was able to leave the FLDS with her six children, ranging in ages from 2 to 10 years of age. She recently gave her first interview with Katie Couric concerning her ordeal. We wish Flora, Ruby, and her children all the best as they begin their new lives!   -- Review by PlygKoolAid

"Sister Wives" is coming back for season 4 this summer. It will return on July 21. On July 2, Broadway World shared some big spoilers for this upcoming season of the show. Are you ready to see it return?

The Brown family has been living in houses across town from each other for a while now. They have been learning to make it work, but now they are finally going to be living right next to each other. They will be moving into their new homes that they had built. A preview shows them with hard hats looking at the houses.

They will be working on their new business My Sisterwife's Closet and trying to start using it to help pay their mortgage. They will have four very large house payments to find a way to pay.

Spoilers also tease that Meri Brown should finally decide if she will let Robyn carry a baby for her and Kody. There is also a big surprise coming that says it will help rebuild the closeness of the family. What could this be?

In the Video it looks like homes, possibly failing jewelry business, and that darn surr-0-gacy will be the focus. Can they drag that out any more?

DISCUSSION TIME! THOUGHTS ON POLYGAMISTS ON GOVERMENT ASSISTANCE, by TERRASOLA

(Sister Wives: Christine's Fabulous Food Pantry - TLC)

Why do people get upset about polygamists (The Browns and others) being on government assistance (welfare, food stamps, etc.)?

Some commenters on this and other blogs do not understand why many people are upset that the Brown family, and other polygamists, have received/ may now be receiving / may receive in the future government assistance in the form of welfare, food stamps, etc.
Here are some reasons why this is distasteful to some people.

·         They may have been / may have to be untruthful to receive government assistance (also known as lying).  Lying can include obscuring, omitting and “interpreting” facts.   I know of no religious or moral code that condones lying and most people consider lying to be particularly squicky when practiced by folks who purport to have a religious or moral code.  This is what we are talking and commenting about when we discuss Christine being on food stamps as a single mom when (a) she doesn't consider herself single, and (b) her family was receiving income from TLC (documented via her bankruptcy papers).  It is also why commenters consider it "squicky to shuffle assets around among non-legally related adults, but among adults who consider themselves spiritually related, so that bankruptcies can be filed and legally acquired debts avoided (documented through an analysis of the Brown bankruptcy filings over time).  Most of us were raised to believe that we pay our own way if we can and we don't look around for ways to shuffle that responsibility off on others.

·         Most people believe that we would be embarrassed to require government assistance and would do all we could to limit the amount we would require and the duration we would require it, i.e. we get a job, or even 2, to pay our bills.  It upsets us to see such assistance treated as a source of long-term income, or worse, as a “right” when we could work, and work hard, to support ourselves, especially if we had the live-in babysitters and housekeepers that the Browns say are so great about the plural marriage lifestyle.

·         Western society places great value in self-reliance, industriousness, perseverance, and self discipline.  It is believed that doing one’s best to earn a living, either as a sole provider, or as a “team” illustrates these values.  There is an association in most people’s minds between long-term use of government assistance and a lack of work ethic, unless there are special circumstances which people believe to be rare and deserving of a “break”.   It does not seem likely that the Browns would have special circumstances requiring assistance in the form of food stamps AND repeated debt relief through bankruptcy over the long term.  Ditto the majority of polygamist families, especially when there are so many hands to go out and earn a living and help the family.

·         People do believe in taking care of others when they fall on hard times and that is why government assistance and private charities exist.  They can also do math.  Government budgets  have a limit.  If “Tom” and “Dick” receive assistance that they do not need or truly qualify for, there may be insufficient funds left for “Harriet”.  This upsets people’s sense of fairness.  This is why many people get upset to hear phrases such as "Bleeding the Beast".  They know that it means some folks who are in genuine need will go without and they feel exploited and used as taxpayers and caretakers of their fellow man.

·         Many people believe that it is immoral to not use one’s talents, skills, and/or education in the pursuit of gaining funds to sustain a family because these things are seen as God-given and, therefore, required to be used to help one's self and others.

·         Finally, it is a commonly-held belief that one must make responsible decisions.  To make irresponsible decisions that lead to consequences requiring government assistance are considered childish and immature.

Sister Wives - Open Discussion on Children Following your Faith

There has been much discussion on this blog about why the Brown children must go into polygamy according to the religion of the A.U.B, to get to heaven. Meri, Christine, and Janelle have all said they don't care, as long as the kids are happy. We've seen Robyn state she wants all the kids in the faith on the previews.
So I ask - What if your child did not follow you in your faith? How would the Brown children be any different than your child or my child that did not follow the same church you you belong to?

I have a Christian Church following friend that their daughter married a Catholic and got baptized within the church and goes now to the Catholic Church. As upsetting as that was for her, do you think she shuns her daughter? Of course not. Nor do I think the Browns will.

It's something that millions of families struggle with in their lifetime. Ultimately, God tells us to love all. And we should seek the good in all, no matter what. What if your child decided upon polygamy? Would you not still love and embrace them?

To me, there's nothing worse than people that act all high and mighty with their religion. I have family members that you would think their poots didn't stink they are so religious, yet, wouldn't HELP another family member for the life of them. And, God forbid, one be in some type of trouble, they'll get shunned to the hilt. (Esp. financial) To me, that's the worst. The exact opposite of what God would want you to do.

Reviewing old videos on the subject, only one thing really caught me off guard. Am I taking it too seriously? Watch this old video from season 1 where they are talking about the children. Kody says the children "will evolve". What do you think he means by that? What would you do if your child took up a religion that your opposed to? This doesn't have to be about the Browns, it can be your own experience.
Please discuss below!

"Sister Wives" Why choose Plural Marriage?

Photo: Dr. Rulon Clark Allred With His Wives and Children. Rulon Clark Allred is the Grandfather of both Christine Brown, Robyn's ex-husband David Preston Jessop, and he is also Kody Brown's 2nd Cousin once removed. Yes, the tree we're working on is gonna be good! I would assume Christine's grandmother and father are in the picture.

What Makes Women Want to Share the Same Husband?

The Brown family belongs to the Apostolic United Brethren Church, a Mormon fundamentalist church that believes in plural marriage.

Being raised in a two parent home as well as having been married to one man, compels me to ask this question. Why would women want to share the same husband? Unless you have been raised in this belief, there probably won't be any rhyme or reason to this mentality. I have never entertained the idea of my husband "making the rounds" whenever he feels the need for a different woman. I find it pretty one-sided when a man feels that he can have any amount of wives, but a woman cannot have more than one husband. I really do not want more than one and can’t imagine living this way, or what the logical or moral reason is for doing so. It is disturbing to think that one man started this belief based on "messages" he received from stone reflections and an angel who visited him.

I do understand the fact that three of these wives were raised in polygamy and yet, all of them find it totally acceptable and normal. According to an essay from an anonymous plural wife excerpt from "Voices in Harmony: Contemporary Women Celebrate Plural Marriage", these are the religious reasons for a women to participate in polygamy.

She believes it is the non-option, high law of God that brings blessing upon her and her husband.
She believes that it is essential to live in a plural marriage in this life, not just in the future life, to obtain the promised rewards for doing so.
She believes that her plural marriage is the only kind of marriage that will continue on in eternity and that God and her sister wives require the same commitment.
She believes that a monogamous marriage falls short of the promised rewards and that God has granted her legitimate priesthood authority to practice plural marriage now.
She believes plural marriage is pure and holy, and that only persons with high moral standards can live it before God.
She believes plural marriage is one of the laws of God designed to help her achieve her full potential, including her rightful status as a goddess in conjunction with her husband as a god.
She believes that plural marriage is an eternal and necessary component of the religion established by the Prophet Joseph Smith and that it exists within a framework of personal covenants with God which bind individuals and families into a covenant people. Therefore, complying with the law of plural marriage will help prepare and qualify her to assist in the perpetuation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the establishment of God's Kingdom on the earth.
She believes that the rewards for living plural marriage within the above context are immense and worth the effort.
She believes that she is entitled to divine, personal direction throughout her life, and that such guidance is necessary to learn whether she is approved of God to live plural marriage and to help her select a husband. Each of these beliefs can be said to constitute the general operating foundation for most Fundamentalist Mormon women who embrace plural marriage.

The Fundamentalist Mormons consider plural procreation as sacred, not sinful, within marriage. Mutual affection and the desire for children are the focal points of intimacy. Each marriage is regarded as a separate, private relationship. Couple's intimacy is not to be shared in any way with other wives or with anyone else is considered inappropriate.

It is believed that if they practice enough loving devotion and obedience to all other laws of God, a plural family can become consistent, adaptable and nurturing environment that promotes fulfillment, security and growth. Because of this family environment, a plural marriage provides the best platform for development, enabling a woman to become the ultimate female: a wife, a mother, a queen, a priestess, a goddess, in every sense.

As the family learns to participate with God in the salvation of all His children, the wives are no longer mere recipients of blessings, but gradually become givers of blessings. To the Fundamentalist Mormon, the attainment of this type of faith is ultimate empowerment. It is interdependent patriarchy and matriarchy; one cannot exist without the other. It is a perfect union, a perfect balance of the eternal feminine and masculine.

Fundamentalist Mormons believe that the Prophet Joseph Smith's full religious intent was to establish a covenant society with plural marriages, but the modern Mormon church does not embrace this teaching and claim that the law was divinely repealed in 1890. The Mormon Church states there is no such thing as a "Mormon Fundamentalist."

Would you want to be in a plural marriage? Would you teach your daughters that is the only way to get into heaven? What do you think?
