The husbands of polygamy

                                            TOM GREEN FAMILY

A number of studies on polygamy have dealt with wives and children, but very little research has been conducted on the husbands. This is not surprising due to the stigma of polygamy and historical threat of prosecution if discovered.

One of the most extensive studies on Mormon polygamous men (see source below) found that most polygamist husbands “would not have considered polygamy if they had not believed it to be a commandment”. That study also found that the manner in which plural families got along depended upon the husband’s behavior more than the wives’; as one wife put it, “It was the way the man handled it a lot and not the way the women themselves accepted it”.

However, this study also found that some polygamist men treated their first wives differently because they knew that additional wives were a possibility. Instead of divorcing wives they grew tired of, or no longer got along with, they could marry additional, almost always younger, wives and ignore the wives they no longer wanted. The researcher spoke with one older man who said that all his plural marriages had been due to inspiration at the time he entered into them, but now that he was older and his desires were waning he realized that men believed in polygamy “because of their lustful desires” and that this “was the reason polygamy could not be lived”. In other words, he had confused lust with religious inspiration and was living the consequences, with greater wisdom but some regret, in his later years.

If I understand this study’s findings correctly, the option to pursue polygamy, which would occur if polygamy were legalized, creates an opportunity for men to become perpetrators, while the requirement to pursue polygamy, which occurs in some fundamentalist Mormon groups and/or communities, creates an opportunity for men to become victims (as well as perpetrators).

  1. You know, I think Tom green is interesting. We'll get into all his arrest tomorrow, but Terrasola has a point. How many of these men, get into this religion thinking it's right, and realize they are doing wrong?

  2. I think that T has some very good points. The men going into it think they are doing God's work, then see all the pain, frustration, money, etc., and see it couldn't be what god wanted. But what do they do then, break them all up?

  3. I agree. How many men, were doing it all the right to go to heaven, then saw what a travesty it was. Sad for them, too!

  4. I think Kody is a bit of both. he saw his dad do it at 20 and thought "cool" and then he met Meri, who was already engulfed in it.
Now, he seems guilty at times, yet, he keeps doing it. He shouldn't of married Robyn. And, Remember when he had his kids plan a B day party for her, that would off pissed me of if i was a kid. I think he's much meaner in person

  5. I think Kody was fine with three wives, and for SOME reason, Meri put the bug in his ear. OR maybe he just wanted more oribts, um, I mean kids.
Now he's rocked the boat, and in LOVE. It will be a mess.
I think Kody would of been fine as a onsie.

  6. In some cases, I feel the men get all horned up at 18, thinking it's the greatest, and by 30- go two ways, cold and a sex addict, or full of remorse and what to do.

  9. I think Kody used to be more of a victim, but I see him getting meaner as time goes by.

I'd said this is true in almost all the cases. How well put. Kody's "inspiration" was LUST. You know they were doing it before the marriage. Even after the engagement kiss, the kissed again in front of the cameras during the birth, like they couldn't contain themselves.
    KODY - perpetrator

  12. Actually, it's the religion THEIR PARENTS put them in tat led them wrong, agreed?
For example, I may go to a Methodist, Christian, Baptist, etc., but I am still a christian, what my parents taught me. I blame the parents for not stopping this crazy cycle.

  13. You know, it really is something to think about. they were told since they were little they would be gods, how's that for messing with your head?
At this point, Kody should have quit, so i will call him perpetrator
