Polygamists Cemetery - why are so many babies dying?

Why are the children of polygamists so accident prone? And why has the county never ordered a single autopsy? Why did this community have pre-signed death certificates available for years?

This is the Babyland Cemetery in Hildale, Utah. These are the graves of babies, so many born with birth defects and genetic disorders from the interbreeding of the FLDS flock, that they require an entirely separate cemetery for them, apart from the regular cemetery up there in Hildale's sister city, Colorado City. There are so many of them that some remain unmarked, forever. You will notice that there is no money provided for the mothers to put stones up for their children's graves. Instead, the only memorial is the little tin or brass temporary tag provided by the mortuary for the grave. Once time and weather have worn it down or blown it away, all that is left is the little mound over the burial, that no one ever bothered to smooth over or plant grass upon.

This is also completely separate from where they have buried most of the still births and babies who die shortly after birth, since Warren Jeffs took power. He declared that babies born dead were born without souls, and therefore did not need to be buried in consecrated ground. Many of those babies used to be buried, like dogs, with their afterbirths shoved into black garbage bags, in the back yard of the publicly funded health clinic on the Hildale, Utah side of the city. This is a "Public Health Clinic", funded by the state of Utah, that no one is allowed into for treatment, unless they are members of the FLDS. Check out the security gate in front of this "public health clinic," which receives taxpayer money, stretched right across a county maintained road, also taxpayer funded.

Also of note is that there has not been one reported case, nor any prosecution, of domestic violence in this community for decades. Apparently, defying human nature, these people can have homes where six, seven or eight women who share a "husband" to whom they are completely subservient, along with literally dozens of children, and yet nobody has ever lost their cool. Really? No one? Ever?

Or perhaps you buy that in a community of less than six thousand people that over a dozen toddlers have been "accidentally" killed by being run over by cars in their streets. Never mind that in a major city like San Antonio, Dallas or Houston, a toddler being accidentally run over by a car is always major news in the community. In this community it's a regular occurrence. Even more interesting is that in the state of Arizona, being run over by a car is considered a "traffic accident" so not a single one of these children's bodies was ever even glanced at by the county corner's office. The community was given stacks of pre-signed death certificates to fill out, however they wished, for years.

So if you want to shake your baby too hard, or hit them too hard, you could just run them over with the family car and no one would ever ask a thing about it, I suppose.

Do yourself a favor and check with your local police department to see how many children have been accidentally run over in the streets of your community in the last 20 years. I'll just bet that the little town of Colorado City, with less than six thousand people in it [at its peak population], has run over more of them.

Oh, and while you're checking on that, you might also want to check on the local food stamp statistics...because in the two polygamist cities of Colorado City and Centennial Park in Mohave County, Arizona, the cost of food stamps sometimes totals more than $180 grand a month. They pay big bucks there for the FLDS people's "freedom of religion." At its peak, fully 76% of the population was on food assistance.

That means either they are working the system and lying to get those benefits, or all the anti-polygamy activists are correct; polygamy forces women and children into gross poverty. Pick one.

DISCUSSION TIME! THOUGHTS ON POLYGAMISTS ON GOVERMENT ASSISTANCE, by TERRASOLA

(Sister Wives: Christine's Fabulous Food Pantry - TLC)

Why do people get upset about polygamists (The Browns and others) being on government assistance (welfare, food stamps, etc.)?

Some commenters on this and other blogs do not understand why many people are upset that the Brown family, and other polygamists, have received/ may now be receiving / may receive in the future government assistance in the form of welfare, food stamps, etc.
Here are some reasons why this is distasteful to some people.

·         They may have been / may have to be untruthful to receive government assistance (also known as lying).  Lying can include obscuring, omitting and “interpreting” facts.   I know of no religious or moral code that condones lying and most people consider lying to be particularly squicky when practiced by folks who purport to have a religious or moral code.  This is what we are talking and commenting about when we discuss Christine being on food stamps as a single mom when (a) she doesn't consider herself single, and (b) her family was receiving income from TLC (documented via her bankruptcy papers).  It is also why commenters consider it "squicky to shuffle assets around among non-legally related adults, but among adults who consider themselves spiritually related, so that bankruptcies can be filed and legally acquired debts avoided (documented through an analysis of the Brown bankruptcy filings over time).  Most of us were raised to believe that we pay our own way if we can and we don't look around for ways to shuffle that responsibility off on others.

·         Most people believe that we would be embarrassed to require government assistance and would do all we could to limit the amount we would require and the duration we would require it, i.e. we get a job, or even 2, to pay our bills.  It upsets us to see such assistance treated as a source of long-term income, or worse, as a “right” when we could work, and work hard, to support ourselves, especially if we had the live-in babysitters and housekeepers that the Browns say are so great about the plural marriage lifestyle.

·         Western society places great value in self-reliance, industriousness, perseverance, and self discipline.  It is believed that doing one’s best to earn a living, either as a sole provider, or as a “team” illustrates these values.  There is an association in most people’s minds between long-term use of government assistance and a lack of work ethic, unless there are special circumstances which people believe to be rare and deserving of a “break”.   It does not seem likely that the Browns would have special circumstances requiring assistance in the form of food stamps AND repeated debt relief through bankruptcy over the long term.  Ditto the majority of polygamist families, especially when there are so many hands to go out and earn a living and help the family.

·         People do believe in taking care of others when they fall on hard times and that is why government assistance and private charities exist.  They can also do math.  Government budgets  have a limit.  If “Tom” and “Dick” receive assistance that they do not need or truly qualify for, there may be insufficient funds left for “Harriet”.  This upsets people’s sense of fairness.  This is why many people get upset to hear phrases such as "Bleeding the Beast".  They know that it means some folks who are in genuine need will go without and they feel exploited and used as taxpayers and caretakers of their fellow man.

·         Many people believe that it is immoral to not use one’s talents, skills, and/or education in the pursuit of gaining funds to sustain a family because these things are seen as God-given and, therefore, required to be used to help one's self and others.

·         Finally, it is a commonly-held belief that one must make responsible decisions.  To make irresponsible decisions that lead to consequences requiring government assistance are considered childish and immature.
