In 2011, the Sister Wives Blog started out as a place to talk about the TLC reality show "Sister Wives", Kody Brown and his wives Christine, Robyn, Meri and Janelle. Today we not only discuss the show, we discuss Polygamy in our society, and the public perceptions of the Mormon Religion. We discuss "Polygamy USA" and will be covering "My 5 Wives."
This blog is geared towards the adult reader, so please, no one under the age of 18 years. Thank you!

Sister Wives: Like A Divorce
When Andy and Nicole, another couple from the Browns' church in Utah, come to visit, the controversial conversation turns to polygamy.
Poor Janelle looks freaking HUGE in the beginning of this clip. I really hope she is starting to take care of herself. Can you imagine Janelle being small? Small, full of anew self esteem and smart-she could really give Robyn a run for her money. I am sorry- but a man that is bed hopping is going to not care for the overweight-ness. Luckily, my man doesn't get to hop, so he doesn't know anything but my fluffiness. That has to give her a horrible self esteem problem.
LOL These people are plants by TLC. I LOVE it. First the guy gets them all comfortable as if he is on their side and then after Meri makes her grandious statement about jumping in feet first, closing your eyes and plugging your nose the guy lets the BOMB drop..... "So now essentially you are in a shared custody arrangement and divorced. And I LOVED how he brought up how if he were to be in a plural marriage that his 1st wife would be in an empty bed and that is not fair to her.
so, why is this guy in a church that believes in polygamy? he sounds hypocritical to even be preaching to the Browns when it's his own religious belief as well?
i'm sure this couple has watched the Kody Brown Train Wreck Family and have decided polygamy is just plain wrong.
Marriage and raising 6 kids in today's world is complicated enough. Who, in their right mind, would want to complicate it all and make it so much harder and stressful with polygamy?
I don't think al loving God wants to do that to his children. This is just some ridiculous manmade notion in the name of God to be able to get away with it.
When you stop and think about it, he actually makes sense. When you take on another wife, you lose that much more time with the previous wives or wife; you will never sleep with her as much again; it's a whole new ballgame of loss for the wife.
You know, at this point I am not blaming Kody as much as the wives. Any 20 yr old horny kid offered up this new religion would take it, esp. if his parents were doing it!
But come one- Janelle, you should of known better. Christine, I guess she's too knee deep in it, but even her mom and most her siblings are out of it now. Meri, you did it just to keep the guy? That's real religion for ya. I couldn't believe it when she said that! Robyn, well, she's just a grifter loving a new house and van and no work!
yeah, i get that he makes sense. what i'm saying is WHY IS HE IN THE AUB CHURCH if polygamy bothers him? that's what doesn't make sense!! that's what that church is all about.
and his wife already has had 6 kids. so, is he going to wait til she's dried up after a few more and THEN he won't have a problem living his religion?
it's just weird listening to him preach to Kody about polygamy when he's not practicing it yet belongs to a religion that does!
it's a huge irony!! and actually insulting and hypocritical to Kody and wives. coming from a "friend" in the same religion and all. weird.
ok. iT'S ALMOST 1 1/2 years later, and I've been reading all these posts from the beginning. What I think is really sad is that Anon 4:39 is probably correct. Many of us are so disallusioned with the Brown's, and far more informed about Fundy Beliefs than we ever thought we'd want to be. And from what we've learned, yes, probably this guy will wait until his wife is old, dried up, and has added a few more kids... then he'll have a 'revelation' about some sweet, young thing. And 1st wife will grow old alone, and crying herself to sleep. The kids will be disrupted, and all sense of this (what appears to be loving) family will be lost! But hubby will keep on cummin, so he get get his planet in the afterlife. How sad it all is for the wives!!
Anonymous 8:26AM, but he DOES believe in polygamy, and even though he can see the problems this is an essential part of his religion. His wife can cry herself to sleep at night when he is sleeping with another woman, and he can spend less and less time with his children. Financial resources will get thinner, but they will still do it because they must.
yeah, i think if this couple were really on board with the polygamy belief, they'd already be practicing it by now with at least one other added wife already.
i mean, he's pointing out all the obvious problems with it all to Kody as if Kody doesn't have a clue! lol
what Kody probably won't say on camera tho is Dude, just jump in and enjoy and let the wife and kids handle all the problems it creates.
I wonder if there are many AUB couples who are having this struggle. They "believe" in it, but the actual "practice" of it is much more difficult than they thought. Sounds like this man will struggle with the pain he would put his wife through. Interesting to think about- like Yokel said, Kody appears to have placed the responsibility of coping on the wives, who have accepted it. Polygamy seems to be a system that only works if the women are willing and able to deny their need and right to have a reciprocal relationship with a man.
I have a lot of respect for this guy to be able to share his religious dilemma with this. Some think he is hypocritical but I don't think that is it at all. I think he thinks of Polygamy as a part of his religious practice that he has been unable to do because he wrestles with how that will affect his wife and family. That sucks.
Sure would be nice if Kody gave a shit about how it affects his wives. And it sure would be nice if ALL of the Brown adults would have thought about all of these things before just 'jumping right in'. They are a fine example of how jumping right in can have really shitty consequences for the people they love.
I think this guy and his wife have a very common dilemma-- finding it difficult to live the faith you believe in. That is common in all faiths. I really don't think this is much different with a Catholic person, for example, struggling with the idea of whether or not to use birth control.
I sincerely hope this guy and his wife do NOT take the advice of just jumping right in and continue to respect their marriage.
And you know what, Kody is absolutely full of shit...courting other women wasn't difficult for him. Loving 4 wives isn't a struggle for him. He doesn't care that his wives sleep alone when he gone. He doesn't understand their jealousy because he isn't introspective enough to understand how he would feel if the shoe was on the other foot. He DOESN'T get it when his wives express how they feel.
He always has a blank stare when they talk about anything that bothers them. Let's go back to when Meri talked about her jealousy issues when he was 'courting' Robyn. He had a blank stare. When Christine talked about how she felt that he was spending more time on Robyn than anyone else. Blank stare.
Even when this guy brought up very valid points about how this affects the wives...blank stare. Kody Brown is like a person with borderline personality disorder. He just doesn't get anything outside of his own perspective. He doesn't really consider anything outside of his own perspective. Everything is about him and everyone else should be thinking everything is about him.
It's refreshing to see that this other guy is actually considering how this will affect the woman he married and their children. And that he is concerned that his wife will sleep alone.
I just have alot of doubt when Kody 'discusses' religion and AUB beliefs. If his parents never converted, would he have joined the AUB? If Meri said she wanted only a mono marriage, instead of whatever-just to have him, would he have converted? It just seems, from these incidents, that the AUB/fundemental door was opened and the life looked good to him. And, for most young guys, I could see them going for it... multiple partners that is... not many marriages. I really believe TLC should have chosen, if they had a choice, a more religious man, someone who had been raised in the religion. Kody just comes across ignorant at times, other times he seems to make things up as he goes. Not for a minute do I believe him when he says it is 'HARD' to manage multiple wives. Like other posters here, it seems like he does zone out when problems arise. Also, if it were so hard to manage, why the 4th? He has the 3 to insure entry to heaven. Contridictions, as usual. As for this guy Andy, and I guess we will have to watch tomorrow, maybe he and his wife were raised AUB, but now have doubts as to follow the teachings. But yes, at the that point, wouldn't you have to leave it? Being a follower and believing would be hard, esp. if you are going AGAINST the beliefs...
There are lots of AUB wives having a struggle, but less men who struggle over polygamy. As to Kody having his quota of 3 wives to get into heaven - there is no such thing as filling your quota. Men are encouraged to go on adding as many wives and children as possible, and believe that will go on throughout eternity. (Wonderful thought for the women concerned - sounds like hell to me!)
redvelvetlady - It is my understand that Christine's mother and many of her siblings are no longer a part of the AUB at all. Now, I am unsure if her dad is.
Anony- "It just seems, from these incidents, that the AUB/fundemental door was opened and the life looked good to him" I agree totally with this statement. And, since Kody's parents JUST joined, he had no background on what it was like to develop and have all these wives and children. Meri did, and should of talked Kody into the LDS side of things. That's my opinion.
I do not understand why these woman try to talk themselves and the public into believing that this is a good life. I would like to smack Robin. She is such an idiot. I do not see what Kody seen in her and I do not see what the other three wives seen in Kody. He is a dumb ass.
Yeah, I feel like the Lexus luxury sportscar is the elephant in the room. I am sooo tired of hearing about how their finances are limited and they're struggling, blah blah blah, only to see Kody tooling around in a very expensive automobile.
I don't know where to put my comment. I'll put in this thread since Andy isn't sure how to live his religion.
Has the sociological aspect of polygamy been explored? The birth rate is a 1:1 ratio. Demographically, the NA population is roughly half man and half woman. That matches the traditional marriage model and definition.
BUT, if polygamy becomes the new marriage model with an adjusted definition, what will be the societal fall out in 50-100 years?
When Kody took Meri out for their (20th?) anniversary, she asked him how he would feel if the tables were turned. He was horrified--couldn't imagine that she could be so "vulgar." Spin a year or so and he and his wives are telling a Boston audience that men can have many wives but women can't have many husbands because of "the faith." Four houses in Las Vegas--these aren't cottages, they are huge houses and in some episodes you see them putting in pools, etc. (while at the same time going to the "discount" store for furniture. Then the couple of them who used to have jobs (Kody and Janelle, and Meri with a part-time one) don't have them anymore. Most men I know who lost their jobs are trying to hand on to one house, not buying four palaces in Las Vegas and then installing pools. When I first started watching this I thought it would be interesting. Really don't care if people want to live in this "lifestyle," but the more I watch them the sicker I get. Kody is a narcissist big time. His first three wives have gained like 100 pounds each and each says in her own way that she is stressed and hurting. Older kids say they hate having been moved to a new place with like 3 days notice. Kody responds, at least on camera, by beaming with Robin on his new baby. (remember the last new baby, Truly, by Christine--guess not because one night alone with your 17 or whatever kids made you want to cry in the corner. I don't think they should be prosecuted but I sure think they should be woken up.
I am from Utah and do not know anyone in this lifestyle but after watching the show I get frustrated ever since Robyn came in the picture Kody pretty much ignores the other wives needs and he doesn't even seem to care it seems like he got board of the the first 3 wives so he had to get a new updated version what does that say to his many children what they see is when daddy gets a new wife and family the old ones aren't so important anymore he needs to wake up and see what these women have done for him and there religion and he needs to start treating them all equal its do frustrating and poor Mari wants another child but how is she supposed to get pregnant if she never gets the attention I fee like he's treating it like he got a new car he gives all his attention to it over the old ones then Janelle and Christean bite there tongue about how they really feel because Kody is to selfish and wrapped up in Robyn and him self to even notice that they Need him to
I do wonder about the finances. The new homes and name brand clothing and sport car and pools and school and most of all the extensive vacations I do wonder why there is such talk about not having money. Each wife had to wite a personal check for earnest money on the homes but I struggle with groc money and gas money !
I don't think Kody's motives for wanting Logan to attend UNLV are pure. Yeah, he would miss him but not the way most parents miss their kids when they leave for college. Logan strikes me as more of a father-figure to the kids than Kody. If Logan went away to SUU, Kody might have to step-up and actually be a dad and not just a "stud". Honestly, the five oldest kids seem to have it more together than the adults.
As I listen to the wives, the first three wives, discuss their self-esteem issues, I say to myself, "No, kidding." I would think it would be hard NOT to have self-esteem issues when your husband is away from you and your kids because he is spending time with one of his other wives. Has that ever occured to them?

One more thing, Kody's eyes. Is it just me or does he look like a crazed animal?
Ok, I have been watching the show for a few years now, I personally don't care how adults decide to live there lives, but I noticed some things. When Christine discussed her issues to Meri about Kody and being jealous of Robyn Meri says " your the problem, not Kody ". Its like a mother protecting her son, the family dynamics are a bit odd. Kody appears to have Narcissistic Personality Disorder:
DeleteTake advantage of other people to achieve his or her own goals
Have excessive feelings of self-importance
Have unreasonable expectations of favorable treatment
Need constant attention and admiration
Disregard the feelings of others, and have little ability to feel empathy
Pursue mainly selfish goals
This guy, Andy, seems to have some seeds of doubt about the AUB. Hoping hoping hoping he lets those seeds grow and he gets OUT.
ReplyDeleteI like 3 of these wives. But how they marginalize and delude themselves for one guy, and Kody at that. UGH
ReplyDeleteI love the comment about Robyn, a grifter.
