What's Happening with those Houses: Part Deux

Kody busting some dirt klods
When we last left the 'cuddle sac' way back in July (and about 4 months after filming ended for season 4), the only ground broken were dirt klods from Kody's frenetic run around the lots.

On September 1st, we reported to you that a neighbor had noticed ground had been broken on the south end of the cuddle-sac, the lots the Browns were shown writing checks totalling $20000 to hold.

Now of course, no one in the Brown Kamp was saying anything...other than a rather loose lipped Christine who told an University audience in October that they did not get the homes. So all we knew was that there was some kind of movement happening, we just didn't know who was initiating it.

Two episodes ago, the Browns supposedly got the pre-approval for the four loans, despite 3 bankruptcies in 15 years. And a wife, who had enough money stashed away to write a $5000 earnest money check, but not enough money to pay off a $4000 credit card account in collections. And another wife who, after being the first to declare bankruptcy in 1997, slipped back into bad credit habits. Not to mention still another wife who hasn't learned yet that if you don't pay the car note they take the car away and if you don't pay the water bill, they shut it off. Even if it is a small amount.

Well, I'm happy to report that the movement in the 'cuddle sac' has been confirmed. Houses have been built with just the roofs left for completion. According to redfin.com, the lots are no longer being shown because "...the sellers have accepted an offer that is now pending or under contract." Not a definitive answer, but pretty darn close.

So until we hear to the contrary (and despite Christine's loosey goosey lips) let's all join in congratulating the Browns in their purchase of 4 high-priced McMansions. Remember how Kody told Papa Joe that he was looking for a mansion that had 22 bedrooms, 4 kitchens and 15000 sqft living area? Well, he got at least 20 bedrooms, 4 kitchens (plus one wetbar) and almost 18000 sqft. Take that Papa Joe. Oh yeah, all for almost 2 million dollars and without a J.O.B.

So let's take a look, shall we?

Refreshing our collective memories, Kody and his Kodettes,  are purchasing  lots 6-9 in a gated cul-de-sac.
To the left is an image of  the graphic we saw on the show.

The plat map (image on the right) shows the location of those lots in the cul-de-sac

And below is a satellite picture of the cul-de-sac, taken in June 2012.

Note that the Brown's lots are at the south end of the development  (the end with no construction in this picture)

Here is a panorama photo of the south end of the cul-de-sac, taken within a month of the satellite picture.

And a photo with the camera pointed towards the north, showing lots 1-5.

About four months later (late November 2012) the once barren south end has now sprouted four new houses nearing completion.

Looking through the gate:  Brown Lot 6 is over to the right in this picture.

On the right side of this photo are lot  6 and  lot  9 (the lots are across the street from each other)
Here's a photo showing lots 6, 7, and 9. Lot 8 is hidden from view.

Here's a view of lots 6, 7, and 8. Lot 9 is hidden from view.

Last, here are the floor plans. According to one of our sources, the same model floor plan was used for each house. We've also been told that the floor plans and driving directions to the cuddle sac apparently have been pulled from Mona the real estate lady's website and the developer's website, but may still be found on other real estate websites that may have listed the properties.

Here's a big thank you to all the SWB followers who contributed to this article! Thank you very much!

  1. I am stunned. It's not everyday that a family of polygamists can afford to move into homes this large without jobs. Wow. Good old USA. Makes me wonder how other families feel who have been trying to get a home loan who don't have any credit issues and with jobs. I would like to know who financed these homes and what kind of terms were given. Christine has never held a real job and is technically a single mom with six kids. I find this very very strange. Maybe they have hidden assets or a benefactor. This blows my mind. How are they going to maintain these homes. Their utilities are going to be pretty expensive each month. If Christine can't remember to pay the water bill, then how in the hell will she survive all the upkeep. What will they do when their show is cancelled. And they are talking about having more kids. Unfreaking believable. Kody must be one hell of a salesman. There is a lot they are not telling us. I also not not believe that TLC is footing the bill. Go figure.

    1. sewcrafty, Exactly, something bizarre going on here. It is just not right, how could the TLC gig be so much money that they can spend $2 million on houses, especially since they have so many children, many of which are almost college age. I don't get it. I guess the government will foot the bill for their college too. This country is truly screwed up.

    2. I wonder about who's really behind the financing of these unnecessary mansions. I think tlc wants this story line. My house has four bedrooms with room for large family and NO I don't live in gated community of mini mansions. These homes are such a needless waste of money. It will be hard on the kids when they eventually lose the homes but it will serve these greedy parents right.

    3. Easy answer - they're lying. Kody's life is all about lies and omissions. The truth will out though - always does.

  2. Thanks for finally revealing the big secret, which we still don't know for sure. I think Christine was probably just trying to throw people off by saying they didn't get the houses. I can understand why, overzealous fans and all.

So do you think each wife used the same general floor plan with the exception of optional hobby room/wet bar/pantry choices? I'm sure there is more than one floor plan to choose from.

    1. If memory serves, I think there were 3 floor plans. A source said that the floor plan being used for all 4 houses was the same - suppose that was one way 4 wives would be equal, and then they just pick and choose their options.

But looking at the model tour shown on the show, and the houses in the pictures, those are some darn huge homes. Comparing the Browns to the Dargers (because I like to do that) Kody's got almost 4 times the sq footage of the Darger's house (their book said 5500 sq ft) with less bodies.

And did you notice there is not a lot of backyard.

Looking at Meri's floor plan. I could live on just the main floor. It would have everything I would ever need and more. Perhaps, once the TLC show is over she can rent out bedrooms upstairs and run a Bed & Breakfast, regailing people with her stories about plyg life, and run personally guided tours of Vegas! LOL!

  4. Neither my husband nor I never been in bankruptcy. During our twenty year marriage, we've only been late on a few bills. Usually, it just an oversight, where one of us thought the other one took care of a bill. As soon as the mistake was noticed, it got taken care of asap. We have never ever been late with a mortgage or car payment. We both paid off our student loans within 10 years or less of graduation. We don't use a lot of credit cards. In fact, we usually only use them for emergencies, like when our one cat escaped from the house and got hit by a car. But, we don't ever run our cards up to the limit. When my husband purchased his last vehicle five years ago, we practically had to jump through hoops to get approved for a loan? So, can someone explain to me how these people can get approved for home loans? That just boggles my mind.

    1. You said it yourself, you don't use alot of credit for things. That makes you look bad in the eyes of credit companies including car loans and mortgages. It's the lack of continuous history of payments. Sounds screwy but that's just how they do things.

    2. I'd guess there's a lot of wrangling they had to do to get approval. Karma s correct re. less usage dents your credit score :/ It's a messed up system. I hope your cat recovered. Poor baby :(

  5. Ok. If Kody was looking for a big mansion originally for all of them to share, why not just get 2 lots and build one?

He could use a blueprint similar to their house in Utah and just add a section for Robin and maybe #5.

    1. There could be zoning issues. Where I live, the zoning is for single family homes, not a giant home with room for what they openly admit are four families. They'd have to find a lot for an apartment or something with separate units. But let's face it, when it comes to something they really want, like adding another wife or apparently IVF, they somehow find a way to make it happen. They don't all want to live in the same house.

    2. a 4+apt. unit would require a commercial loan which is even HARDER to obtain than a residential loan, so that's not an option for them either. ;')

  6. Well if the Browns really got these homes, more power to them. I hope they can manage to maintain them and afford the upkeep because I'm sure there must be some pretty strict covenants to follow in a gated community so exclusive that 9 homes make up the entire community!

I just know that many gated communities are rather restrictive as to what you can and can't do, in fact I watched an HGTV House Hunters episode where the community the couple wanted to purchase in had a covenant against parking trucks in the driveways of the homes. That said, can you imagine what the Browns have bought into?

Also, looking at it another way, would you want to be their neighbors somewhere in lot 1 - 5? You shell out $400,000 plus for a home in an exclusive community and you have Kody for a neighbor? It boggles the mind, at least my mind!

IF and I think it's a big IF, but IF they got these homes and can keep them, it would provide stability for the kids after being uprooted so I sincerely hope that if they are the Browns' homes they can keep them. The kids need some stability and to actually see their dad once in a while. This might help.

Gotta agree we've seen a heck of a lot of smoke and mirrors with the Browns, and they aren't even A-list! Then again, they could actually be that naive, so the best we can do is hang on and enjoy the ride until the inevitable trainwreck happens.

I don't know if they checked out the HOA rules, but my daughter and son-in-law live in an upscale are, and althought they have a guard at the enterance their HOA fees are $1000 a month and they are not allowed to park their cars on the street or even in the drive way, but must park them in the garage. These are only a few of the rules, sure hope the Brown's checked this all out before buying. I bet their neibors are not going to be happy with all the cars and filming going on. People who buy in such small subdivisions usually do so for the privacy. Bet there is going to be some unhappiness when they find out who their neibors are.

  9. In searching for McMansion info, I ran across this Kody Brown/LIV meet and greet from 2011. Green Goo can cure addictions and the organization can help families financially? I really wonder if these claims violate any consumer protection laws. LIV is based out of Utah(anyone know if it's a polygamist or church owned entity?) so not sure if a complaint would be filed with Utah Attorney General or Nevada, but surely the claims violate SOMETHING other than good sense.

    1. LIV is a MLM (multi level marketing) and is considered legal because an actual product (food supplements) is being sold. The "curing addictions" and financial help (by buying a starter kit and selling the green koolaid to friends and family) was actually part of their 2011 campaign of Operation Detox. That campaign apparently was dropped sometime in 2012. Utah is considered the mecca for MLM companies in the US. LIV is not LDS owned, but...a lot of Mormons are into MLMs like LIV for some reason. What I find weird is that these mainstay Mormons have embraced Kody and his fundamentalism.

    2. Food can be an addiction to some, so its an epic fail from that standpoint, since the Browns don't seem to miss any high calorie meals & snacks!

      Delete
    3. yes - it's called emotional eating. The Browns (including a lot of the kids) seem to be quite skilled at it. sad - Stuff those feelings back down with FOOD! that'll work! ;'(

also - they eat a lot of carbs/starches/sugar w/out exercising. That's a cycle that just makes your blood sugar level drop and you're hungry again soon, so rinse and repeat the addiction cycle.

    4. Jeff Tuttle, the CEO of LIV international is an ex BYU Mormon. I wrote to the company asking him why he was using an illegal life style to promote his products, especially since his church is so opposed to polygamy now. No answer - what a surprise! I guess when money is involved, lofty principles go out the door for some people, especially in Utah where there is a get-rich-quick mentality amongst the not-so-bright.

    5. almost all the MLM's started in Utah - usually the Provo/Orem area (BYU) are owned and operated by mormons. Mormons are huge on MLM's for several reasons. The wives can work them while staying at home w/kids and also mormons are used to cold-calling/soliciting/marketing their religion by serving their 2 year missions for the church. A myriad of "no thanks" in a row doesn't deter them. Sales 101. Orrin Hatch (mormon senator) got state laws passed years ago to make Utah a hugely MLM business start-up friendly state.

  10. The only way I think they could get theses homes is with a big check from TLC. Since its their 5th season I would guess they are getting paid at least 25k per show per adult plus all expensives paid (ie, gas, vacations, disneyland passes, meals etc., etc. That alone is 125k per week. I realize they dont get this 52 weeks a year. Say 12 episodes a season thats 1.5 million. Now Im guessing what they get paid but comparing it to other TLC reality shows 25k per show is not really to high. Logan is an adult now so he for sure gets paid and with the other kids I have no clue what they would earn. The fact all expenses are paid is a huge bonus. Both the Duggars(19 kids) and Greedy Gosselins had part or all of the electric bills paid by TLC. As well the Browns can charge for filming in their own homes. The extra's are huge. This is the only reason Kate Gosselin freaked out when TLC was done with her crap. The gravey train came to a stop for her litter. This is just my opion I have no clue what they get paid but TLC is making money from this show so Im sure they are getting rewarded. Firs season of Honey my Boo Boo and TLC and Rosie Odonell were both offering to buy the family a house? I just think its amazing and sad, poor kids when the camera and the money stops as its back to reality once the reality show is over.

    2. Well according to TLC calendar this is only the Browns' 3rd season.

I know I've said previously that the chances of the Browns getting that sweet a deal from TLC - who according to the very little ACCURATE info out there pays the families as a whole rather than per person - is remote to say the least. (Especially the Disneyland passes - tlc is not a Disney owned network and as was said a couple days ago by a Disney insider, Disneyland is not in the habit of giving free passes to Z list celebrities).

However I feel it's necessary to keep debunking these claims as people tend to believe whatever they read on the Internet.

Jon Gosselin stated in court documents that at the height of their fame, the MOST TLC paid them was $22.5k per episode, one lump sum for the entire family. That's it.

Everything else we read is PURE speculation. Its apparent to me that the participants in these shows have it written in their contracts that they will NOT discuss renumeration. The punishment for doing so must be quite severe as Jon is just about the only one who has spoken up - and the amount was in the court record.

However TV stars in sitcoms, news shows etc DO have their salaries published/discussed. I have a VERY hard time believing that the Browns are getting as much or more for their crappily produced show than some of the regulars on shows whose ratings are much much higher, shown on networks with deeper pockets than lil ol' TLC.

      IMO.

    1. Who exactly sets up the HOA? Since this is a brand new subdivision of only 9 homes, the Browns own approx 44% of the homes. So wouldn't they have sway over what rules are set/will be set by the HOA?

      Delete
    2. I moved into a new subdivision in 2006. The first two years the HOA was a management company hired by the developer, and they came up with a few strict rules about type of fences--had to file plan, certain type, certain height. After those first years, there were elections and a board consisting of subdivision residents. So yes, several adults from the Brown clan should run for spots on the Board, if their neighborhood HOA is similar to mine. If the other residents are smart, they will keep them off or only allow one of them on it.

  12. If Robyn's ex was smart(laugh here), he'd check out child support laws. In some states, the NON custodial parent can sue for child support from a wealthy custodial parent so that the children do not have such a disparity between households during visitation. This has happened in cases of lottery winners, windall money, or pro-athletes. I don't know Nevada law but I wonder if her mansion money would apply?

    1. Hi SnarkAttack, the problem with the Playboy Mansion analogy is that the women living in the Playboy Mansion generally don't get along. Two former Mansion residents, Izabella St. James and Jill Ann Spaulding, have written about their terrible experiences living at the Mansion. There is a lot of nasty competition among the women. While Hefner's "main girlfriend" may stick around for a few years, some of the lesser-girlfriends move in and move out within a week.

Also, Hefner's harem does not live under one roof. Some live in the main house, and others live in a house across the street nicknamed the Bunny House. For ten years, Hefner's estranged wife and sons lived in a house next door, but they have since moved and the house has been sold.

How can they sleep at night and how are they going to afford those houses? Ridiculous and part of the mentality that the gvt should take care of us and we shouldn't have to pay it back. Did the other mothers just leave that space blank, refuse to state, or claim that the father was unknown? It would seem things are set up so Kody is never legally obligated to pay child support, and that the previous government aid did not consider the father's assets/wages. This would be welfare fraud.

    2. Yes it is. I stand to be corrected, but if Utah went after all the welfare fraud, it would be an extreme undertaking, and they would really have to plan it ahead of time. I'd say they know they are lenient and that's the least of their worries.

    1. Hi Anonymous 8:38 AM, great call on the possibility that they are renting these homes from the builder. Brilliant idea, and supports what we've been thinking here in our house: that they were renting that house in Utah too.

Plus, then what Christine said at the UNLV meet and greet would jive with what we're seeing here - they didn't get the houses as a buyer, but they're moving in because the builder is going to build them out and then lease them to these four (who counts Kody here)?

Lease? Lease to purchase? If the builder has to boot them, then bet he can rent them out as celebrity homes and it's sorta a win win for him.

Anyone here with scoop on the Utah house? Thinking that the Utah house was a rental because no chatter about using sale of it for the down payments in Vegas. And in the show where the kids go back and visit the house, one of the boys said a relative was living there now.

One thing about these Vegas houses being rented: helps the builder out, like 8:38 has pointed out, but it also helps these four families (which they are, budgetwise, duh) because the landlord will pay for things not them.

My real question: who is the real tenant on the leases? TLC? The Browns' LLC?

    8. I agree they could be renting the houses. BUT if they actually got a loan to buy them, I think the Utah house could be part of the reason why. It's good collateral.

  18. I wonder if they made a lot of money from their book sales. That could have been the source of their $20,000 down payments.

Is there any way to find out how many copies of their books sold, and how much they've made in royalties?

  19. Flabbergasted, dumbfounded, or bewildered, I'm not sure what word best describes my thoughts regarding these supposed homes...

If these in fact are their homes, what on earth were they thinking building 4 identical homes side by side, when the other 5 homes in the neighborhood are all different? This will definitely not help with resale value. I'm also under the impression that this family doesn't live in the same area for more than a few years at a time. Correct me if I'm wrong: Utah, Wyoming, Utah, and then Nevada? Plus they also still owe more money on the Lehi house than what it is worth! So now they will now be paying 6 mortgages?!? Maybe they had a clause in their contract with TLC, that if they fled Utah, TLC had to provide them with housing?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I thought they'd sold the Lehi house to one of the wives sisters. If not, then one of the wives sisters is at least paying rent as she's living there with her family as seen on the show last season.

      Delete
    2. From what I've read on this blog, they owe more than $100,000 than what the actual home is worth and have 2 mortgages out on it. I think Meri's sister at one point is renting the home, but I'm not sure if the rent is actually meeting both mortgages.

      Delete
    3. The sensible thing is of course to go back to Utah and add on to the lehi house. But this family has never been called sensible.

  20. So the reality is that through some very cloudy approval dealings, these people have "qualified" for mortgages despite their documented irresponsible and shady financial past. Only in America !!

Okay....Now we know the REAL reason for the show. It likely was the plan all along.
No Kody, it wasn't to educate the public about how nice and normal some Plygs are.
It wasn't to flee the big, bad Utah polygamy laws.
    It wasn't to multiply love.

It was to have your ever-growing harem and progeny live in style.
To live in a gated mini-mansion compound paradise where the cameras and sound crew will have plenty of room to park (those three-car garages per single wife will come in handy, won't they)....
** And to keep those checks coming.**

LIV and your online jewelry flea market and the pretend real estate business are just phony fun hooks for the cameras to keep rolling and to keep the viewers.

Meanwhile, good, *honest* folks scramble to care for their children and "make do" with their homes, paying their bills, avoiding sticking others with their debts and living within their means. I do resent that my husband and I, along with all the rest of taxpayers, have had to contribute to absorbing "your" debts....
Yes, you....Robin, Christine, Meri, Janelle and Kody

You want to live in this style, fine, best wishes to you all.....
Except do it on your own time...do it your own dime.
Do it quietly, without fanfare and *faux drama.* (love your line, CJ)
Do it without milking the system or exploiting fans who have been duped by your *created* soap opera.
Do it without the phony loophole deductions for non-existent businesses and "offices."

I have NO sympathy left for ANY of these adults. It is a sham !!
Christine's hair-brained "oops" about the houses, poor, poor Janelle's flat-lined MO, Robin's harried, worried stance about any and all, Meri's many "needs"....
And of course, there is Kody..impersonating being a *man who actually works*.
It's all bullsh**t...and has been all along !!!!
These adults know *exactly* what they are doing....!!!!

Sorry for the length of this...thx CJ for the update.

  22. My husband and I just built a similar home (minus hobby room and 5th bedroom) in a gated community in a different state. We did it because there are some great deals to build right now, and my husband owns his own business and works nights and weekends so I liked the security of a gated community being home alone with two small children. I get that they might want a gate because they do have a lot of children and don't want people showing up at their front door because they are on TV. But I don't see how they can continue to afford them after the show ends. Anyways here are some of my thoughts based on our experience.

    1. Our $5000 earnest checks were never cashed. It was just to hold the lot in case someone else was interested. It would have been given back to us if we walked away. We had 30 days from writing those checks to sign a contract and get preapproved.

    2. When we signed a contract we had to put 10% of the contract price in escrow with the builder. This was not a down payment (that was separate with the bank). I don't see how they could have enough cash for that plus a down payment.

    3. We were given $75k in free options as an incentive by the builder. Perhaps the money they are planning to use for hobby rooms was just an incentive, meaning its not going to be cash out of their pockets. However, if chose to forego the options incentive we could have negotiated a lower contract price. Maybe that is what janelle is trying to do.

    4. We had 4 different sized and different priced floor plans to choose from. Why could they not choose a smaller model to make sure they could make the payments down the road?

    5. Our house took 1 year to build and was listed on the MLS and on various real estate websites as for sale until we closed.

    6. We were preapproved and have very good credit and jobs and yet when our mortgage went to the underwriters they went through our bank accounts going back several years and wanted documentation of everything! Just wondering how they would be able to go through that level of financial scrutiny.

    7. At closing, bc it was new construction we had to pay significant closing fees and taxes along with HOA dues in addition to the down payment and 10% with the builder (we got back the escrow after we paid all of this at closing).

    8. We have found since living here, and maybe the laws vary by state, that it is very difficult for a HOA to restrict who can buy a house in the neighborhood. However, once you live there, our has rules and restrictions about everything.

Ok sorry this comment was so long, but I will be amazed if they go through with this and get these houses.

Thanks again - it's good to know. As you said, not sure the Browns could have made it through that level of financial scrutiny. I almost have to wonder if someone else is footing the bill - or at least the original bill, to get them to closure???

  23. Well....well...

I'm still VERY skeptical. I mean...the builders owned the land...they couldn't just let it *sit* there empty.

But if the Browns qualified and are moving in with their crappy credit and questionable income I guess it's time for me to take the ownership plunge - I've had my eye on this modest home a couple blocks away. I do believe it has a wet bar!!

  24. There is also the possibility that some fundamentalist Mormon organization is underwriting these loans. I'm not sure what the resources of the AUB would be, but I'm sure they are substantial. Heck, even Warren Jeff's FLDS might see this as a good investment if it meant that the Browns could get polygamy decriminalized. The financial resources of these organizations are thought to be perhaps in the Billions (with a B) collectively.

If they are underwriting the homes (think Roman Grant underwriting Bill's Home Plus store on BIG LOVE) that would explain pretty much the whole shebang. (and make the whole storyline about needing approved credit kind of a nice inside joke on us)

  25. I'm with Funky Town and New Shoes. If I bought a $400,000+ house in a gated community, I would not be happy to be sharing a street with the Browns. The camera crew alone would get on my last nerve. But Krody would bring even more devaluation. Let's face it, IFIFIF they do get the houses, four foreclosures are pretty much inevitable. That would do nothing good for the value of the other homes in the neighborhood.

Several people have mentioned how hard it is for people with relatively good credit to get into homes like this. I can't imagine a lender handing out this much money to people with such a dismal credit history, not to mention to people with no actual jobs. Even the dumbest banker on earth knows this gig is temporary. To make matters even worse, they seem to give no thought to the notion of a rainy day. Education, illness, or accidents appear nowhere on their radar. I'd be willing to bet that homeowner's insurance, HOA fees, utilities and property taxes have never occurred to these dolts, except for Janelle.

When my kids graduated from college, they did not owe anything in student loans. They thank me for that regularly. I haven't had vacation in years, and made other sacrifices to make that happen. That gave me peace of mind, and helped fulfill MY mission statement as a mother. I can't, for the life of me, understand how a freaking wet bar is discussed more than how to help these kids pay for college. To add insult to injury, Krody is willing to dump thousands and thousands of dollars on producing another child they obviously can't afford. Their priorities are so out-of-order it's hard to watch. The dumbass will continue on with his gross irresponsibility, but the kids will be the ones who will ultimately have to pay for it.

That green goo LIV or whatever is not really working. It's an MLM scheme and yes some people do go out and work those hard, but we don't see that. We see them moms at home all day and I can't believe Robyn and gang is getting rich off the lovely (*gag*) website.

So where do they work? Can you please shed some light? If I'm wrong and they all have jobs I will be the first in line to apologize to the Browns.

      Delete
    4. Respecting your opinion....

Apparently, the Browns themselves care quite a bit that "people care" about their new homes. Without the ratings (pro or con) and the "caring" interest of the viewers, the show will flop and the checks
will cease. This is how the game works and the Browns are obviously loving and living the game.

      As for the hearsay potential.....
Wouldn't we assume that IF Kody actually had a job, that fact would have been shown in an episode at some point in the last 2 seasons?

Wouldn't we also assume that IF they **didn't* have money problems, there would have been no need for the relentless clips of "will we or won't we be approved?" No clips of debt removal, credit score scrubbing.
Otherwise, is everything shown fiction ??

    5. The Sister Wives FB page used to be filled with posts admonishing people to "leave the Browns alone." I haven't looked in a while, but I'm sure there's more of the same from gullible fans or operatives. It always make me laugh, primarily because of the total absence of logic from these cheerleaders.

First of all, the Browns put themselves on national television, airing their dirty laundry in every episode.

Secondly, "leave them alone?" 'Scuse me, but has anyone here bothered, confronted, or stalked them? I'm guessing that most people here opine about other things they see on television, be it the news, other reality shows or last week's episode of Grey's Anatomy. Sorry (not), but the Browns don't get special dispensation. They made themselves public figures, and they're no different from Snooky with regard to fallout.

Finally, echoing what others have said: hearsay, really? The bankruptcies are a matter of public record. If anyone in this family actually had a job, SOMEBODY would have heard about it. As if someone unfortunate enough to work with Kody every day wouldn't have blabbed to The Enquirer, or some entertainment news source, for that matter. The drama over financing has been served up to us, not conjured. So, no hearsay, just what we've been told.

My prediction: 5-10 years from now after the TV cameras have long since packed and gone to other families/concepts, Kody will be doing the same as Kate G - desperately trying to get another network or producer interested in his "story" again. 31. I have not had a chance to read all of the posts yet, so I am probably repeating a lot of what has already been stated, but this P's me off, big time.

Years ago, when I was in my first marriage, my ex and I moved to the Phoenix area. We embarked on building a new home. We had been previous home owners, and had very good credit. We almost didn't get the house, because somehow my ex's student loan history had been misreported. He had gotten his loan deferred for six months when he first graduated (went to school after we got married to get his Bachelor's degree) while looking for a better job, and it got reported that we were late on a payment somehow, before the deferment got reported. We had to literally jump through hoops and dig up papers to prove that it was deferred and we had not missed any payments. Our house was half the size of these and less than half in price. It absolutely makes zero sense in this market, that these women would be approved, ZERO!

These people have no idea what it is going to cost to MAINTAIN these homes. First, the window coverings alone are outrageous. I know that sounds crazy, but each time I have built a home, it can run in the thousands just to get good blinds to block out the sun, etc.. Then there is furniture to fill the rooms. I just don't believe that they would ever settle for used furniture again, with their sense of entitlement (with the exception of Janelle). They then have the ghastly utility bills.

I now live in OK, and my sister has a home this size and just for her electric bills, it sometimes runs almost $1,000 in the Summer due to the heat. Granted, they do have a pool as well, but they are very frugal in how they heat and cool their home so that it runs efficiently. I don't know how this family would cover one home, let alone 4....and now they are going to add more children. This Makes Me So Mad.

Here I am, a small business owner, as is my husband (with two thriving businesses), and I am still driving a vehicle for deliveries that has been paid for, for years. Target is my best friend for clothes, and we live very practically. Yes, we splurge every now and then on a nice purse, or a 2 day trip, but that is only after our bills are covered.

IF they did get these homes, I have a feeling that this will be the Browns' demise. Their fans will star seeing them in a different light, and this could be a huge fall for them. I don't wish that on anyone, I just believe that this is going to do them in.

  35. I won't actually believe that they bought those home until I see some documented proof (deeds, property tax filings, etc.) that those properties are in their names. TLC, the production company, might be doing some sort of slight of hand with these houses. Or the developer is building for other buyers.
    I just don't buy it.

    ReplyDelete
  36. As I understand it, their cuddle sac is part of a larger subdivision. So while their 9 house street is gated and appears separate, it is actually part of a larger group.

Their builder set up the Homeowner's Association( HOA.). They determined the initial rules. It is impossible to change the basic ones.

Now this part I don't know about theirs, but MANY developers make the bylaws such that while people can be elected, the developers have at least 51% interest. After all, how the community looks reflects on the builders years later.

In this community, a management agency owned by the developers is the enforcer of the HOA rules. So while the HOA might meet to vote if some house can use a different font for the house numbers for address can be changed, the management agency takes the complaints and issues the violations.

SAMPLE of very common subdivision rules for those not familiar:
Houses must all be painted all the same color/s
    Houses must be brick
Roof must be made of brown tile
Must be at least 1800sq ft
Must have 2nd story but not 3rd
No numbers on porch must be above front door in 3" size only
No yard signs larger than 3'-5' and may only be for contractors
    No political signs
Residents may not park on street overnight
Must be enough garage spaces for each permanent resident car
    No more than 2 pets
Grass must not reach more than X tall
Garbage may not be out on street till after 9pm and removed by 9:00am the next day
    Noise limits
    Party size limits
How many trees must be planted
How many people may live there or stay more than 3 nights
Solar or timed light post in front yard X feet from street
    When sprinklers may be used
    What color grass is
Even may force you to use the same landscaping company to mow your yard
    No home business
No business meetings more than 5 people or 3 cars parked on street from visitors
No RVs or boats or ATVs
No play structures or landscape modifications without HOA approval
Fences-yes or no and type and size and locations

There are SO many possible rules and fees to pay! And if you don't follow rules, the HOA may pay someone to correct it(like clean up garbage from your yard or tow away non-operable or expired registration or flat tire vehicles) and charge you for it. You might get issued a ticket with a fee if you don't have the correct curtains. The HOA rules are an enforcible contract they voluntarily signed. If too many violations, they can sue you in court for money or ultimately eviction.

People who've never lived in a subdivision often don't understand that while you bought the home, you signed an HOA contract, too. You cannot do whatever you want in your castle.

Can you imagine how many remotes the Btowns will lose for the security gates?!?!? They must buy new from the HOA and depending on system, might have to pay for ALL homes to get new security access devices if it has to be reconfigured!!!

    4. It's a private community that you voluntarily sign a contract in so they really can ban political signs and just about anything else. It's a private development not public land. That's how places in my state get away with it. Maybe your state is different and I'm not sure of Nevada?? But they could cover it by saying ANY sign not just political I suppose? Lol, what political sign could they post, Plyg Power for President? But I bet they sure couldn't post anything like signs for green goo. You cannot usually even rent a sign to put Happy Birthday on for your yard in HOA rules.

Oh, and many HOA list a rule about members of the HOA like only one person per house can be elected. Otherwise, they could have 18 year old kids, too. But many also give controlling interest to the developer so no worries about a majority.

Whatever, I bet the Browns rack up an unprecedented amount of violations!! I bet the first 24 hours result in complaints. Like, too much noise moving in too late at night, etc. somebody has GOT to make friends with another homeowner or go to HOA meetings!

      Delete
    5. Sadly, as attorney I hate to tell you that your information is incorrect. HOAs are regulated politcaldivisions regulated under Nevada law. Furthermore developers have control of boards as Declarant only so long as they own the majority of lots. The center home was built by a different developer. The north lots consist of two models which were sold. Nonetheless as the holders of 4 of 9 residences, the Browns will inevitably have seats on the Board of the HOA

I agree with you! Pay back your creditors if you have money. I felt the same way when Donald Trump declared bankruptcy and stiffed his creditors. But, I guess, it is the American Way to find loop holes in the rules and screw whoever you can.

  43. It really is saddening to see a family that has had struggles go for such greed. Gated? build a fence. No yard and all those kids! Why they don't move back to their community or Momtana where the children would learn more about their beliefs makes sense. All that talk of wanting one big house is just a lie. Greed has taken over. I actaully wish they would realize what the future holds.

  44. To the Poster now going by "Exercise Regime" and the others that are poking fun at Christine for saying that:

I wasn't going to say anything initially but i'll go ahead and make the correction and "keep it real" here now. Believe it or not, Christine DOESN'T have it wrong! Not sure why so many automatically jumped on the initial bandwagon making fun of her stating that about the Darger's "exercise regime," but you don't have to just take my word that she's actually right either. It's in the dictionary even using the example sentence: He was put on a strict exercise regime. Regimen is a synonym of regime and either one is correct to use in this instance. ;')

Christine is quite correct in using regime even if it is not as common as regimen.

    5. As Fan from Australia mentioned Jim Bob and Michelle admitted it in an episode and they got some amazing appliances...

also the Duggars and Kate Gossellin as well as other reality shows have admitted that when they go on trips or do any simple get together it is always the show producers paying..so that is why they could afford the vacations that were FILMED because they dont pay for it themselves...

I am not sure if the show is actually going to help them with buying the houses or not but on occasions many reality shows have rented houses for the cast so they portray a certain lifestyle when in reality they live in a much modest house...

    6. Thanks for the link - I don't follow the Duggars so was unaware. However - their situation appears different from the browns. The article stresses that the Duggars were already working on the remodel - just not fast enough to suit the producers - the article says that it would have been done anyway and debt free. Totally diff from the Browns. Perhaps if the Browns had stayed in Lehi they might have gotten a similar deal, tlc paid for part of the remodel so it could place to film and air on the show. Not out of the goodness of their heart.

    7. I remember an episode when Kate Gossellin was looking right into the camera and giving thanks to TLC for a lot of what they had and can do. At the time, I believe that Jon and Kate were getting their teeth whitened...so I would assume that TLC paid for them to get that done amongst other things...oh like a hair transplant for Jon. So even the little things add up and make a difference in your income.

Hmmmmm....Kodster getting a hair transplant...that could be an episode!!!

  47. From looking at the floor plans, if they took the extra option of the 5th bedroom, and even the hobby room as a nursery, the bonus room would make these 7 bedroom homes.

Very soon, Meri is essentially alone. Put her in the bonus room of one house, Robyn in the other (just cause I don't like her). Christine and Janelle in the 2 master bedrooms. That leaves Truley and Sol in the nurseries (hobby rooms) and the rest of the bedrooms for the kids. I'm not convinced those kids don't just konk out where ever they are, living room, the floor, the couch, where ever.

Certainly between 2 homes, arrangements could have been made. But, they aren't a family. They can't share a kitchen, they can't share this that and the other thing.

HOW ON EARTH CAN YOU NOT SHARE A KITCHEN BUT SHARE A HUSBAND????

If they really believed in their religion and believed in their family, keeping themselves closer and living like a family would have been more important than spread out in these ridiculous homes.

    1. Anon 3:49 - Outside of them moving back to the country (Lehi) and adding a wing for Robyn, this sounds like it should have been their best option in Vegas. It is so foolish and presumptuous for them to have these huge houses when just a moment ago they were struggling really, really badly. How quickly they forget.

While it's so exciting to buy a new home and I know everyone is really excited about it, a smart individual will always be looking ahead to the future. For reasons that have already been stated, I don't see this move as being smart at all ... unless they have a bunch of money that we don't know about, which they very well could have. We just don't know. So, I'll just go ahead and wish them the best and hope that they really enjoy it for however long they have it.

    1. Dakota now I know why I've not hired a cleaning service ~ you have to clean to get ready for them! I think you should just leave it all and tell them there's a good tip at the end :-)

I agree with you about cleaning - we have a 4 bedroom home that is 2000 sq. ft. and use 1 room for a library/computer study type room, the other 2 are set up as guestrooms for when our kids or grandkids (1 1/2 and 9) visit.

We keep the 2 guestrooms closed most of the time and this is STILL a lot to clean! I'm fed up with this place, imagine if I had 7 bedrooms or even 5 and a wet bar.

On another note, I told my husband that in Kody's world I am deprived because I do not have a wet bar and he looked at me like he wanted to spit out a 4 letter word, but just shook his head. *laughing*

    2. We have a lady who comes every two weeks to clean. We're pretty tidy, but we do make a quick run-through (we call it "the blitz") the night before she comes, just to pick up dog toys and make sure counter tops, etc., are clear. That way, SHE can CLEAN.

I'm with those who would not want to have to clean a big house like the Brown McMansions. And I have NO belief that Meri or Robyn will so much as empty trash cans. They are so past the poverty of their former lives that they will think it "beneath" them to clean up after themselves.

    3. Their Lehi home wasn't spotless to begin with. It's prolly pretty hard when their are a dozen plus kids running around but I didn't get the sense they were very tidy. Remember when the teens went back to visit and commented that it was still home just put together better or something like that? I took it to mean it was picked up. It was very lived in and we know the new ones will be used and abused, also.

The way they parked the vehicles back in Lehi and still in Vegas will NOT be tolerated I'm sure! No street parking and no trash falling out of vehicles into the yards!

    1. And your impression is wrong. The Brown's arent the first to get a bankruptcy and then go in deep debt. Toni Braxton comes to mind as a real celeb in that boat.

    2. You can get loans within a month of filing. It just increases your interest rate. However, in the current economy, some of that has changed it is more difficult. We know people who bought a car within a month and a house within 4 years, however, they were not ridiculous about it and purchased significantly less than the banks were encouraging them---like $100k instead of $125k on their house.

      Delete
    3. Wow, are there NO consequences to bankruptcy?

      Delete
    4. Not really except you pay higher interest rates because you are "high risk" Credit card companies pratically beg you to sign up after bankruptcy so they can charge you high rates and high annual fee's on top of it and they know you cannot file bankruptcy again for what 7 years?

I bought a house 4 years after bankruptcy and my interest rate was insane, even with a large down payment. My credit score wasn't even that bad after four years of making sure everything was paid on time. I have since refinanced and got the rate dramatically reduced.

So though you can get credit after bankruptcy (especially early into it because they know you cannot file again and they will sue you to get the money even if you don't pay) the consquence is huge outrages interest rates and fee's upon fee's. One credit card that sent me a "pre-approval" not only had a huge interest rate and large annual fee's for the privledge of having their card, they charged $150.00 just to activate the account. I passed obviously but hey I could have gotten more credit easily. I'm guessing that is how some people end up with so much debt even after bankruptcy. They get all the offers coming in and figure hey why not, have to rebuild right? They don't look closely at the terms and end up right back in the same boat they were in prior to filing.

Me I learned the first time, and honestly if my husband had not been transfered with the military we probably wouldn't have had to file (because I would have kept my good paying job with benefits as well) but when we moved it was extremely hard for me to find a new job that would cover the cost of daycare let alone daycare and help with the bills. That period of my life taught me how to live off one income and how to effectively budget/stretch a buck.

Seems like the Brown's didn't learn their lessons in any of their bankruptcies.

    5. Wayne Newton has also gone into very deep debt.

However the diff between Wayne/Toni and the Browns is that the first two are still very marketable entertainers who command a high paycheck. I'm one of those folks who thinks "Waynr Newton" when I think of the quintessential Las Vegas show. (Wayne has also owned and bred some amazing Arabian horses!) the Browns...not so much.

I filed BK in the mid 90's after my first divorce. Although it was a HUGE relief not having creditors on my back (they all started calling my ex...lol) it still kept me from obtaining credit to buy a car, and was a factor in not just renting my current pad and almost not getting it (back in 1998) but also when I applied for my current job (in 2000). Explanations were necessary. Even with extenuating circumstances, a BK is not a walk in the park. I needed to build back my credit so I did get one of those high interest "secured" cards and charged $50-75 each month then paid the balance right away to establish a good credit record and went on from there. I now have a very high credit score - last time I checked, in the 700's.

As stated above I learned the first time...

  58. Just wanted to point out that declaring bankruptcy will occasionally result in your favour because you cant declare bankruptcy again for at least 7 years. So if Christine did declare in 2010, there's no way 'out' for at least 5 more years.

Slightly off topic- but last week I read Flora Jessops book 'Church of Lies' and then read Ann-E-Young's 'Wife No.19'. They have so many similarities- except that A.Youngs book was written from the eyes of someone who was actually around when polygamy was introduced. Her parents were directly influenced from J.Smith in person- they were among the first wave of polygamists in mormon history. She has tale after tale of families being destroyed by it, of sweet-natured women turning into jealous/hateful people, of fake 'harmony' and inner turmoil & resentment, of church leaders taking community money/property and hoarding it themselves, of abuse...it's uncanny that over 100 years later Flora Jessop writes that the same things are still occurring. I feel really disturbed about it all :S. Just had to get it off my chest.

  61. Here's my issue with tonight's show that I just have to talk about...
How can Kody meet these kids who have escaped polygamy with NOTHING and parade them around his FOUR houses and tell them about his having a pair of running shoes for each house?! That was not about showing them the good side of polygamy. That was a straight-up "look at me" Kody show! Jerk!
And on a happier note, I am so touched by the families that "host" these kids and give them a loving home and family. Their stories really touched me and I'm so glad they are in a happier place now and giving back to others through that program.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I really believe that the simplest explanation is the correct one.

The Browns are going to be leasing these new homes.

That way, they get this storyline filled with the "drama" of getting new homes, picking the number of rooms, etc,

AND, the builder gets the free publicity.

There is simply no logical way that this bunch could get these 4 brand new homes. And even if, for some crazy reason, they managed to make it through the entire approval process and pay for whatever down payments are needed to get INTO the homes, there is absolutely ZERO way for them to afford them over time.

This bunch cannot pay for mortgages, insurance, HOA fees, utilities, furniture, maintenance, cars, car insurance, gas, car maintenance, clothing, food, household supplies, hair cuts, personal supplies, costs for college (whatever they will be contributing), health insurance (plus co-pays and co-insurance), life insurance, and then funding saving and retirement for 5 adults.

Even if they had $5 million in cash right now, and they were going to move into THESE houses, it would be tough for them to make that last 20 years.

I can't wait until I get to see how this all comes crashing down.

So I began to think, Meri is truly and legally married to Kody. That means Kodster REALLY needs to keep Meri happy, happy, happy. Because if Meri decides to hit the road...it's gonna cost Kody a pretty "TLC" penny. And I'm sorry, the way they are portraying Meri on this show is a very greedy, spoiled, I want, I want, I want women/child. So it is making me think that she is taking FULL advantage of her status and marriage situation.

She's the only one with any real power in the family. Another strike against the beauty, joys and spirituality of religious polygamy. ;')

  64. BoutiquesWest.com, it does stay on your credit report and you WILL pay higher interest rates because of it.

A friend did a bankruptcy and within a few months she was getting credit card offers for secured credit cards (secured with a savings acc't) OR ones that offered a $200 or $300 line of credit. The theory there is that as you get a better credit rating, the line of credit increases.

But this family bought a car - at the time they did have a high interest rate, something like 12 or 15% when others were paying 9 or 10%. They had trouble when their rental home was sold because they had to move and all the potential landlords were wanting to run their credit.

So there are what I consider minor consequences.

  66. Is it just me or are those some of the ugliest houses ever? Even if I had enough money to throw away half a million, I wouldn't want one of those.

Also, can anyone explain why the house on lot 5 looks so different than the other houses? It looks like it's three stories, not two?

As for whether they got the houses, I'm still not convinced. Unless they bought them with their "business" money and/or credit, I honestly don't see how, even if they shuffled money around (which is probably illegal) they could have qualified for personal loans.

I guess we'll have to see though. I personally think they'll end up back in Utah eventually ... most likely after Janelle and Christine leave, Meri divorces Kody and sues him for half of his wealth, and Kody and Robyn crawl back to Utah in shame and obscurity. But if they do get these houses, I hope they didn't defraud anyone in the process, and that they'll keep them up. I admit I'll be seriously surprised if either of those happen, but hey maybe I've misjudged them all along. ;)

  68. If you look at the homes which have closed from the Builder at the north end of the cul-de-sac on the Assessor records, the Builder bought the lots for $625,000 per lot in 2010 and is selling the homes for $440,000 (the 3 which have closed to date--including 2 models--all closed at this price point). The Builder (which remains unnamed here because I dont think we are supposed to disclose who it is) has huge construction loans on these lots. Construction loans are at much higher rates than convention owner occupied principal residence financing.

What does this mean? The Builder is losing his shirt and needs to get these homes closed and off of its construction loans (including having to get short sale approval from its lender.) It means that the Builder cannot afford to rent these homes but mudt be selling them. The hypothesis that these homes will be rented from the Builder is very likely untrue.

Here is the scoop on the homes as of last weekend. Roofs are done however windows are routinely being broken on Robyn's home (3 as of last weekend).

  69. With regard to the size and amenities of these houses (I agree on appearance surfkitty), the parents have not thought about how their kids are getting accustomed to such bourgeois living. It's doubtful those of their brood who go plyg could find a situation where they would live the same "TLC lifestyle" with pools, wet bars, french doors!, etc... I fear they are teaching their kids to crave luxuries they and/or their kids may not be able to sustain. I personally know what it's like to go from high to lower through no fault of my own and it's not fun to feel like you did worse than your parents. In this case, it would be a false feeling since most of the parents were spongers (Janelle excluded!), but nevertheless, it's tough to do with less when you are raised with more. But of course these jokers don't have any forethought (Janelle excluded again - sharing bedrooms, yes Janelle, you are so smart).

If someone else is footing the bill, they may have a chance to stay in their homes. However, utility bills, HOA, insurance, taxes etc all need to be paid, and that may be difficult if you don't have a job. We'll see what happens..

  72. Oh, one more idea...

Maybe TLC bought the homes, and the Browns just get to stay in them as long as they're filming the show. (Or otherwise will have to pay TLC back somehow if they want to keep them.) Is that possible? I can totally see the Browns agreeing to a ridiculous arrangement like that.

  74. I, too, hate sliding doors and don't think they belong on a home like these. I'm not a Mean Girl Mother Meri fan by any means either.

this whole home buying facade for this family of no means is just pure BULLCRAP!!

  75. There were many interesting statements made but the one that stood out near the end when the teens were having ice cream..Stephen was asked he would ever consider this Brown kind of plural marriage and he said someone would have to pay him...you then could hear Mariah say "thank you" and then madison with kind of a smirk looked across the table at someone..maybe Logan...out of camera view..
this weeks show was to contrast the browns against the jefford types but next week back to the unimportant things in life when you are raising so many kids...wet bars and french doors... these browns have a lifestyle..they are not seen living any other styly other than a materialistic one...well it is a tv show afterall got keep us watching.

  76. Re: Speculation regarding the four large mortgages

Could the Browns possibly be using non-traditional financing, like owner financing. (homebuying.about.com/od/financingadvice/qt/091007_OwnFinan.ht)

If so, that could explain how they could purchase such large homes with poor credit.
